BOOK, LINE, AND SINKER Ever since I read Speak years ago, I have loved Laurie Halse Anderson (as many of us do). Now, it is a privilege to read her story of being a survivor of rape, as well as other personal storiesfrom her life.

BOOK CONTROVERSY: TWO BOYS KISSING The ALA just released the list of most frequently challenged books of 2015 and David Levithan’s Two Boys Kissing is in at number ten.. Two Boys Kissing is the story of two boys who set out to win a Guinness World Record for kissing, as they try to figure out who they are and what they mean to each other. It’s based on real life events. This award winning book was challenged for condoning BOOK, LINE, AND SINKER This was a fun, classic mystery story with clues, twists and turns, and a great protagonist. I thought the back story was well done, the pace of the novel moved at a good clip, and although she made some mistakes, the protagonist was likable, strong, and diverse. BOOK, LINE, AND SINKER Ever since I read Speak years ago, I have loved Laurie Halse Anderson (as many of us do). Speak was the first novel I’d ever read that dealt with the reality and trauma of rape and didn’t use it as a tool for a horror/suspense novel. Now, it is a privilege to read her story of being a survivor of rape, as well as other personal storiesfrom her life.

WEEKS 23-25
March 2, 2020

Happy Monday! Friday afternoons have been hectic, so this weeks in review post is coming to you at the start of a week instead. We have had some really awesome things happening in the library the last few weeks of February, so I’ll give you the highlight reel. Valentine’s Day (2/14) was a professional development day for us here, and the library hosted two in-house PD sessions. The first was a lovely hour for faculty to spend checking out our professional collection and any other materials they might want to use for a class. The overwhelming feeling was one of gratefulness that it was a chance to just breathe and do some reflecting/planning with books. The second session was a book tasting for adults, which featured a number of themed tables including Taste the Rainbow (LGBTQ+ books), The Salad Bowl (#OwnVoices immigrant stories), Tough Topics at the Dinner Table (race, politics, etc…), Chef’s Specials (librarian recommendations), etc… We provided themed snacks and had a lot of books checked out or put onto TBR lists by the participants. All month long we were celebrating Black History Month, but we a few special events during the third week of February. On Wednesday, we hosted a lunch for any interested middle school students, where we showed some video clips of Black American authors reading from or talking about their middle grades books. (You can see our YouTubeplaylist here
.)
They got really excited about the authors and books that were featured, and we gave them the last ten minutes of lunch to check out books. Thursday we hosted a lunch for our high school students where we talked about _The Hate U Give_ and watched a few video clips for discussion. (YouTube playlist here.)
Friday was our official African American Read-In celebration, with the first floor of the library reserved for students to read works by AA authors. We had a lot of teachers bring their classes to visit, as well as individual students who came in during their free time to read. The library provided snacks, comfy seating, and played some sweet records on an actual record player. Our highlight from the last week of February was our 6th grade book club meeting. The book for this month was _The Thing About Jellyfish_, so we set up a jellyfish craft to do during our meeting. Their jellyfish turned out so well and look super cute hanging up inthe library.

WEEK 15
December 6, 2019

After being spoiled by a 2 day week last week, a full 5 days felt so long! The word of the week has been resilience. Our 6th graders are working on research charts in both their history and science classes, so we worked with them on citations using NoodleTools. In one class, their projects were “junior” level and in the other class they were “starter.” We had the kids flip both projects to “starter” which brought us to a slightly larger problem. “Starter” doesn’t provide the option for citing videos, and the kids needed to cite a video from YouTube. Using resilience, we recommended citing as a website and kept on rolling from there. This batch of 6th graders struggled a bit with the number of options included in a junior level, so starter is a better fit. The next moment of resilience came during a Skype visit with author Jennifer Chambliss Bertman and our Middle School book club. After testing out a trial Skype call with a microphone and TV projection on Wednesday, I was confident our call on Thursday would be perfect. Instead, our video didn’t work _and_ we couldn’t hear Jennifer! She was incredibly gracious and kind enough to type out her answers to the kids’ questions. She could hear them all talking and I think got a kick out of hearing their excitement over her book. A not so resilient moment came during our long advisory periods this week. We were given supplies to participate in a holiday door decorating competition. The rules – teachers can’t help and students could only use the supplies given. Our 8th graders were less than thrilled with the idea and required a bit of prodding to even participate. The finished product was slightly underwhelming, so fingers crossed we can get some enthusiasm for other activities beforeWinter Break.
There were some wonderful librarian moments though – we’re planning an amazing day with 6th grade teachers surrounding _The Breadwinner, _and our innovation challenge planning is coming along nicely! A teacher said yes to “Match.com for books,” as inspired by Nerdy Book Club.
I’m working with 7th grade teachers on a cross curricular unit for post-exams, and we made some great breakthroughs. And finally, one of our librarians is out in Seattle for the People of Color Conference and will surely bring back some creative ideas for improvement. All inall, not too bad!

WEEK 12
November 15, 2019
by

After last week’s craziness, this week seemed a little more standard. There were plagiarism classes taught in the Upper School (mostly Freshman and AP Lang students) and a continuation of NaNoWriMo meetings during lunch. Our 8th grade advisory presented at school meeting on our trip to BARCS, and the 6th grade teacher team met during lunch to discuss logistics for Breadwinner Day. We’re working out the kinks of an engineering challenge involving pulleys and water as well as designs for a kite-building station. The other stations will be a museum in the library displaying projects, skits in the auditorium written and performed by students, and a graffiti wall where students can draw and also grab a themed snack. It should be a fun last day before winter break where students can showcase what they learned through reading _The Breadwinner_ and researching Afghanistan. On Thursday our school had a guest speaker, Lisa Damore, so we closed the library early and went to learn about stress in students, particular girls. Since she’s a published author, our NaNoWriMo kids get to eat lunch with her today and ask her questions about the writing process. Hopefully they will gain some motivation and tips! The highlight of the week for me was 6th grade book club. Their enthusiasm (and percentage who finish the book!) is always exciting and re-energizes me. We discussed _The Mysterious Benedict Society_, did some tricky puzzles, and snacked on SmartFood popcorn andSmarties.

WEEK 11
November 11, 2019

This week is always one of the weirdest during the school year. Monday and Tuesday are parent-teacher conference days. Wednesday is “normal.” Thursday is service day for the middle school. Friday is Grandfriends Day, with lots of visitors joining their grandchildren and a school wide assembly. Since we don’t have the same conferences as teachers, in the library we did some professional work on our collection. Monday we read through a lot of articles about doing a diversity audit for a library collection and mapped out the process we wanted to use. Tuesday, two of us visited the newly renovated central library in Baltimore, and then we did a librarian field trip to a neighboring school to talk about how they address diversity in their collection/their teaching. It was an awesome couple of days. Thursday, one of us went with our 8th grade advisory for service day at the Irvine Nature Center, where we tromped through brambles and collected “tree tubes” that had protected baby trees through the spring and summer. We also got to meet a 7 foot long white rat snake and just enjoy being out in nature. Another one of our librarians went to a professional development day where she got to talk with librarians from other schools about topics of interest. We don’t get to sit with fellow professionals and discuss the work of being a librarian nearly enough, so to do it twice in one week is amazing. Friday we had six grandparents visit our advisory and join us for weekly His, Lows, and Cheers. I think they got a kick out of listening to the kids. We also got cupcakes at lunch, which is always a win. And that’s it for another week in the library!SHARE THIS!
