This list is very different from the list of Oldest Golf Societies, largely because all the oldest golf clubs except those at St Andrews, Earlsferry and Fortrose had to move late in 19th century to locations where they couldo create 18-hole golfcourses.
MEANING OF GOLF WORDS Bogey "Bogey" was the first stroke system, developed in England at the end of the 19th Century. The full history is given in Robert Browning's History of Golf 1955.. In 1890 Mr Hugh Rotherham Secretary of the Coventry Golf Club conceived the idea of standardising the number of shots at each hole that a good golfer should take, which he called the 'ground score.' The letter says that the golfers have the right to play there 'from long possession', which implies personal knowledge that golf went back several decades into the 18th century SCOTTISH GOLF 1457 TO 2057 1820 INNERLEVEN GOLF CLUB 1820 Innerleven Golf Club. Innerleven Golf Club was founded on February 29, 1820 when 15 golfers drew up their first rules. Initially, the name of the club seems to have been Inverleven Golfing Society, referring to the old name of Innerleven. Originally members were required to wear a jacket of King Charles tartan when competingfor any prize.

The mail coach from Berwick would come galloping past, without stopping and 'the guard dexterously picked up the Prestonpans' letter-bag, which was lightly fastened on to a pole and held out by Mrs Forman's son,Peter.

1818 OLD MANCHESTER GOLF CLUB 1818 Old Manchester Golf Club. Old Manchester Golf Club was officially founded in 1818 as The Manchester Golf Club. There is a reference from 1837 that the club was started in 1814 by Mr William Mitchell, so it is likely that groups of golfers were playing in Manchester in theyears beforehand.

We know golf was definitely played at Royston in October 1624 because there are records for expenditure on golf in the account books for George Villiers, Earl of Buckingham. ( 1 ). The etymology for the word "Fore!" is not absolutely certain. The Oxford English Dictionary records its first use in 1878 as a warning cry to people in front of a golf stroke and, like most people, believes it is an abbreviation of the word 'before'. 1794 DUNBAR GOLF CLUB (1856) 1794 Dunbar Golf Club (1856) The earliest golf recorded in the Dunbar environs are prosecutions for Sunday golf by the kirk, probably over the West Dunbar Links, as outlined in 1616 Dunbar.. In 1794, the 'Dunbar Golfing Society' set down its Regulations and listed 27 members, of whom 26 were present and one was marked absent. This list is very different from the list of Oldest Golf Societies, largely because all the oldest golf clubs except those at St Andrews, Earlsferry and Fortrose had to move late in 19th century to locations where they couldo create 18-hole golfcourses.
WOMEN'S GOLF EARLY HISTORY Then came an explosion of interest in women's golf and golf clubs. Recently, a reference was found to the first woman golf club maker from 1820-1823, also at Bruntsfield. She was Isobel Denholm, widow of David Denholm. Several events in women's golf history are significant for golf history in general. They include the formation of LGU in 1893 HISTORY OF EARLY GOLF BALLS The New Statistical Account of Scotland 1838 estimated a expert ball maker could make 50 to 60 balls in a week. With Tom Morris as his apprentice, Allan Robertson made 1,021 featherie golf balls in 1840, 1,392 in 1841 and 2,456 in 1844. The work was hard, as shown recentlyby a

COLOURED FLAGS AND 'OUT' AND 'IN' Coloured Flags and 'Out' and 'In'. Many golfers have wondered why there are different coloured or colored flags on golf courses on the front and back nine holes. Even today, the Old Course, like most early courses, has the ninth hole as the furthest away from the clubhouse. The first nine are still the 'out' nine, then you turn to play back'in'.

Although the Glasgow Golf Club was not officially instituted until 1787, when they played for a Silver Club, there is a note in the records of the Burgh of Glasgow in 1760 requesting permission by Patrick Bogle to build an extension to a 'lodge' which was HISTORY OF WOMEN'S GOLF DRESS OR FASHION Gloria Minoprio took part in the British Ladies Championship in 1933 in what was, quite simply, the smartest golfing outfit ever worn by any golfer. This was the first sight of a woman in trousers, called 'slacks', on the golf course and to say it caused a stir is an understatement. Her outfit is now in the possession of the BritishGolf Museum
1818 OLD MANCHESTER GOLF CLUB 1818 Old Manchester Golf Club. Old Manchester Golf Club was officially founded in 1818 as The Manchester Golf Club. There is a reference from 1837 that the club was started in 1814 by Mr William Mitchell, so it is likely that groups of golfers were playing in Manchester in theyears beforehand.
1832 NORTH BERWICK WEST LINKS North Berwick West Links Hole 16 with Bass Rock in background. North Berwick Golf Club began life with some style at noon exactly on 4th June 1832 when the Captain, Sir David Baird of Newbyth, tee’d off to play over the 6 holes on the west links which stretched to the wall at today’s 3rd/16th holes. Sir David was a descendant of Sir John 1791 BURNTISLAND GOLF CLUB 1791 Burntisland Golf Club. The date on the Burntisland Golf Club crest is 1797.
