BUILDING A HOMEMADE VACUUM PUMP Some wonderful things can be done once we get rid of the pesky atmosphere we live in. Feathers drop like rocks. Bells go silent. Water boils at room temperature. Balloons inflate themselves. Frozen foods dry out but keep their shape. Sometimes all you need is a little bit of vacuum to help dry something out, or move a liquid through a tube, or remove gasses from a liquid. BUILDING A THREE-PENNY RADIO The radio needs between 1.1 volts and 1.8 volts to operate. But it also needs at least 0.1 mulliamps of current. The specifications say it needs 3 milliamps, but as you can see in the photo, we are using only 0.15 milliamps, and the radio has very nice volume. TheOCTANITROCUBANE
2.1. 10.1. 500. Octanitrocubane is up to 30% more powerful than the most powerful common military explosive, HMX. What is also important, it is very stable. It does not degrade until it sublimes at 200 degrees Celsius (392 degrees Fahrenheit). You can hit it with a hammer and it will not explode. Perhaps fortunately, it is very difficult tomake.

MAKE A SOLAR POWERED MARSHMALLOW ROASTER In this section we will describe how to make a marshmallow roaster, powered by the sun. It can be made from readily available materials, and while it is probably a little safer than the traditional method of roasting marshmallows (over a campfire), it can still start fires, and should be used only by those you would trust with a box of matches. FLASHING, DIMMING, AND OSCILLATING Flashing, Dimming, and Oscillating. For many electronic appliances and art pieces, turning the device on and off simply means plugging it in or unplugging it from the wall. Other devices have simple switches, which are not a lot more complicated than plugging into a wall. A switch simply connects two wires together electrically. RUNNING 3 VOLT DEVICES FROM 1.2 VOLT BATTERIES Running 3 volt devices from 1.2 volt batteries. Try connecting a solar cell that produces 2 volts to a light emitting diode. It seems to work with red lights, but not with blue or white. Blue and white light emitting diodes need more than 2 volts to run. Inside a solar garden light, we find a single 1.2 volt battery.SCIENCE TOYS

MAKE YOUR OWN 3D PICTURES IN MINUTES In this section you will see just how easy it is to take pictures that show realistic three dimensional (3D) images. The pictures can be viewed in three ways: by crossing your eyes, by focussing you eyes at infinity (called the 'parallel' method because the two lines of sight are parallel), and with an inexpensive (or homemade) 3D viewer. BUILD AN OSCILLOSCOPE An oscilloscope is a very handy device to have around for analyzing electrical signals that change over time. These signals may come from microphones (so you can look at the waves produced by music or voice) or from any other sensor you can connect electrically. So far, we have discussed explosives by when they were invented, and later, to some extent, by their sensitivity to heat, friction, or shock. In this chapter, we will discuss the classes of explosive, which depends on the types molecules used (their chemistry), and the mix of different molecules used. We will be primarily discussing high explosives, since almost all explosives since black BUILD A HYDROGEN FUEL CELL A fuel cell is a device that converts a fuel such as hydrogen, alcohol, gasoline, or methane into electricity directly. A hydrogen fuel cell produces electricity without any pollution, since pure water is the only byproduct. Hydrogen fuel cells are used in spacecraft and other high-tech applications where a clean, efficient power source isneeded.
LEVITATING PYROLYTIC GRAPHITE Pyrolytic graphite is a synthetic material, made by a process called chemical vapor deposition. To make pyrolytic graphite, methane gas at low pressure (about 1 Torr) is heated to 2000 degrees Celsius. Very slowly, (one thousandth of an inch per hour) a layer of graphite grows. The graphite made this way is very highly ordered, and thelayers

PROJECT: BUILD A SLOW SWITCH Project: Build a Slow Switch. The simplest timer we can create uses just a capacitor, a resistor, an LED, and a switch. We will build the second simplest timer, by adding another resistor. In the schematic shown above you can see that we have a resistor near the battery labeled R1. That is the charging resistor, and it determines how fastthe

On Sunday, I taught Connor Gray how to demonstrate science toys while his father Theo and I went to more talks. In return for doing that, I gave him a 405 nanometer laser (purple light). He had spent the day playing at my farm the day before, and had gotten the same 5 hours of sleep that we all had, but he did a stellar job at the demonstrations.
CHAPTER 5: THERMODYNAMICS -- FIELD'S METAL, A METAL THAT Wood's metal is a mixture of 50% bismuth, 25% lead, 12.5% tin, and 12.5% cadmium. It melts at a temperature of 158° Fahrenheit (70° Celsius). Cadmium and lead are toxic metals. By using non-toxic metals like indium, tin, and bismuth, Field's metal is safe to GUNCOTTON AND SMOKELESS POWDERS The explosive compounds that are very sensitive were discovered first, since once you have made something that blows up in your face, you tend to notice that special property. For less sensitive explosives, it can take some time between the discovery of the substance, and the identification of its explosive potential. This is the case for many explosives, and we will see it repeatedly as weHOMEMADE BATTERIES
There are lots of easy ways to make homemade batteries. Basically, any two different kinds of metal can be placed in a conducting solution and you get a battery. Familiar homemade batteries include sticking copper and zinc strips into a lemon or a potato to make a battery. One quick battery is made from a soda can, the soda from the can, and BUILDING A HOMEMADE VACUUM PUMP Some wonderful things can be done once we get rid of the pesky atmosphere we live in. ELECTRONICS FOR ARTISTS Build something wonderful . CONTROLLING ELECTRICAL CURRENT Controlling Electrical Current. When we were playing with LEDs, we tried to keep the current limited to 30 milliamperes. We got this number by looking at the specifications of the LED on the back of the package. But sometimes we get parts that have no detailed specifications, or we are re-using a part from some scavenged bit ofelectronics.

The yellow dye Woulfe created is today known as Picric Acid, or more formally, 2,4,6-trinitrophenol. Picric acid is a yellow crystalline solid. It dissolves in water forming a highly acidic solution. It was used as an antiseptic for bandages and as a burn treatment, but its toxicity and tendency to form sensitive explosive salts on contactwith
