WITH A SPLIT PROBOSCIS CAN BE SAVED! EUTHANASIA IS NOT ALWAYS NECESSARY! IT HAS LONG BEEN CLAIMED THAT BUTTERFLIES WHO CANNOT FUSE THEIR MOUTHPARTS ABSOLUTELY CANNOT FEED AND WILL BE CONDEMNED TO STARVE TO DEATH, AND THEREFORE SHOULD BE EUTHANIZED. I HAVE ALWAYS COUNTED MY BLESSINGS THAT I HAD NEVER PERSONALLY ENCOUNTERED THIS PROBLEM BEFORE — BUT THAT CHANGED LAST YEAR. IT WAS PROFOUNDLY DISTRESSING TO DISCOVER THAT MY VERY FIRST ADULT MONARCH OF THE SEASON, ECLOSED 7.30.17, WAS UNABLE TO KNIT HER PROBOSCIS. SHE WAS PERFECT IN EVERY OTHER WAY. IN HINDSIGHT, THE FLAW AFFECTING THE ‘VELCRO’ THAT ENABLES A MONARCH TO FUSE THE TWO COMPONENTS OF THEIR MOUTHPARTS TOGETHER WAS VISIBLE IN THE CUTICLE OF HER CHRYSALIS. THE SEVERITY OF THE PROBLEM COULD NOT BE DEFINITIVELY DETERMINED UNTIL SHE ECLOSED, HOWEVER. SOMETIMES, MINOR CUTICLE IMPRESSIONS OR INJURIES ARE HARMLESS; OTHER TIMES THE TISSUE BENEATH IS IRREVOCABLY DESTROYED. THOSE OF YOU WHO KNOW ME FROM THE DAYS OF PAPILLON AND THE ‘EVERY SINGLE MONARCH COUNTS’ LEGACY HE INSPIRED WILL KNOW THAT I DO NOT ACCEPT CLAIMS OF ‘CANNOT BE DONE’ WITHOUT THOROUGH RESEARCH AND, IF ANY DEGREE OF CHANCE EXISTS IN HELPING, I WILL GIVE THEM MY BEST EFFORT. I AM ONE WHO AVOIDS EUTHANASIA WHENEVER POSSIBLE. I AM IMMENSELY GRATEFUL THAT THERE HAVE BEEN VERY FEW INDIVIDUALS IN MY CARE WHO HAVE WARRANTED TAKING THIS MEASURE.* IN THIS CASE I AM SO GLAD I DID. THE BUTTERFLY’S PROBOSCIS IS NOT SIMPLY A DRINKING STRAW. EACH HALF CAN BE FLEXED, AND CAN STILL UPTAKE NECTAR VIA BOTH CAPILLARY ACTION AND A SUCKING ORGAN IN THEIR HEAD, BUT THEY BOTH NEED TO BE IMMERSED IN A NECTAR RESERVOIR IN ORDER TO DO THIS. IT IS TRUE THAT SURVIVAL FOR A MONARCH WITH A SPLIT PROBOSCIS IS LIKELY TO BE IMPOSSIBLE IN THE WILD, AS THEY ARE UNABLE TO INSERT THEIR SPLIT MOUTHPARTS INTO FLOWERS TO SIP NECTAR, BUT IN HUMAN CARE IT IS ALMOST ALWAYS POSSIBLE TO SAVE THEM! SO, TL;DR: THEY CAN BE SAVED! IF YOU ARE WILLING TO HAND-FEED YOUR MONARCHS, THEY CAN LIVE HAPPY LIVES WITH SPLIT PROBOSCISES! *EVEN IF I HAVE AN ADULT THAT IS INFECTED WITH OE, MAKING RELEASE UNETHICAL, I DO NOT BELIEVE THIS IS JUSTIFICATION FOR ME PERSONALLY TO END THEIR LIFE AS LONG AS A REASONABLE QUALITY OF LIFE CAN BE PROVIDED THEM. I FORAGED FOR THESE EGGS AND BABIES, AND BROUGHT THEM INTO MY CARE, AND I BELIEVE IT IS MY DUTY THEREFORE TO BE A WORTHY STEWARD OF EACH OF THEIR LITTLE LIVES. IF THEY ARE STRONG ENOUGH TO SURVIVE ECLOSION AND THEY DO NOT APPEAR TO BE GRIEVOUSLY DEFORMED TO THE POINT OF SUFFERING, I KEEP THEM IN THEIR OWN HABITAT AND SPOIL THEM FOR THE TIME THEY ARE HERE, GIVING THEM THE BEST QUALITY OF LIFE I CAN. SOMETIMES, NOTHING CAN BE DONE BUT THESE INCIDENCES ARE FORTUNATELY A MINORITY. IN THE CASE OF DISABILITY SUCH AS SPLIT PROBOSCIS, AN OTHERWISE HEALTHY MONARCH POSES NO THREAT TO OTHERS AND IS WELCOMED AND NURTURED IN MY HUMBLE RABBLE. #SAVETHEMONARCHS!
