SEATTLE SCHOOLS COMMUNITY FORUM: BROADVIEW-THOMSON K-8 - The district did put up a fence but later had to change its direction to prevent students from walking in that direction. I’m wondering how many students have to walk extra blocks to avoid an area that the district seems to think is safe. SEATTLE SCHOOLS COMMUNITY FORUM: GUEST POST Guest Post - HCC and SPS. Editor’s note: I’m happy to publish any essays about SPS or public education in general. This one is from Megan Hazen who has three children in Seattle Schools. Last Tuesday the Seattle School board passed an amendment to board policy 2190, which governs how Highly Capable (HC) students are served in Seattle. SEATTLE SCHOOLS COMMUNITY FORUM: WHAT DID I MISS? One of the many vagaries of COVID is that we all had time on our hands (or at least far fewer events to be at). SEATTLE SCHOOLS COMMUNITY FORUM: AN OVERDOSE DEATH AT THE There is a group called “We Heart Seattle”, led by Andrea Suarez, who have been very good at working with the homeless. Andrea reports on their Facebook page that a man named Nicholas Bjarnson overdosed at the encampment next to Broadview-Thomson K-8 on May 28th. SEATTLE SCHOOLS COMMUNITY FORUM: HOMELESS CAMP UPDATE On Friday, Mayor Jenny Durkan did oversee a sweep of an Olga Park encampment in Ravenna, which was spurred by the murder of one of the campers by someone who lived elsewhere. However, in the case of the Broadview-Thomson playfield, Mayor Durkan has sought to foist responsibility onto Seattle Public Schools (SPS). She has been ramping up pressure on SPS to stand up their own SEATTLE SCHOOLS COMMUNITY FORUM: SEATTLE SCHOOLS These include ReadyMath, Zearn (Engage NY), Envision, and Bridges in Math. I've also copied the 6 proposed policy changes below for reference. This is a difficult, emotional topic, and I appreciate Michael's willingness to put a draft plan out and solicit public feedback. SEATTLE SCHOOLS COMMUNITY FORUM: IS THERE A PROBLEM IN Interesting piece in the Seattle Times today from psychologist John Rosemond (who apparently has a syndicated column on parenting) about the labeling of children at school. He doesn't quite come out and say it but I believe his premise is that we are over-identifying students rather than accepting that ALL students have different ways of learning and challenges to learning. SEATTLE SCHOOLS COMMUNITY FORUM: BOARD'S INVESTIGATIVE REPORT Charlie went over what he thought striking from the Board's Investigative report. SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 24, 2019 SPED AND THE SUPERINTENDENT EDITOR'S NOTE; I took out the reference to a "swarm" of people, forgetting that swarm actually implies a large group and that was not my intent. RESTORATIVE JUSTICE: LIKE MOST EDUCATION MEASURE, IT NEEDS RESOURCESTO SUCCEED
There's this phrase - _"Don't let the perfect be the enemy of the good" _- that I see used quite often when speaking of public education initiatives especially in defense of charter schools. And then, districts, states, the feds plunge on into initiatives, apparently hoping it will all turn out well (see Race to the Top, remember thatone?).
This issue, restorative justice, is a very good example. "We've got to do something" - because student discipline is so skewed towards two groups of students - Special Education students and Black students is the cry from many in leadership. But the work, the actual work, falls to those in the trenches.Read more »
