BLOOD, SWEAT, TEARS AND CONTENTMENT May 25, 2018June 7, 2018Saumya Sharma
Blood, sweat, and tears. The journey has been real. _Blood_ was spilled, when during the mains week, the intravenous tube inserted in my arm got displaced as I lay in bed, worried to my guts about the GS1 and 2 papers I had to write the next day. A lot of hot and humid nights were spent _sweat_ing it out in my college hostel room, as I worried about being able to clear the prelims paper with less than 4 months of studies. And the _tears_? They came in their own sweet fashion. The silent tears that welled up in my eyes everytime I would read inspiring stories of people who succeeded despite adverse conditions, and the rare floods that streamed down my face when the journey seemed too difficult. But, as I look back, the blood, sweat and tears were worth it. The contentment that comes when your honest efforts turn into sweet success is precious. The sense of contentment doesn’t come immediately. Rather, it takes time to sink in, it takes time to get used to the idea of your success. What comes first is a sense of disbelief, a sense of ‘hollowness’, because your mind is trying its best to process what just happened. But once the endorphins mellow down, it begins to settle in. And then comes the feeling of gratitude. I feel extremely grateful to have seen the day of my UPSC result. The blood, sweat and tears were worth it. now begins the real journey in the service of the nation.Endnote:

DISTRICT SOUTH WEST DELHI June 8, 2019July 27, 2019Saumya Sharma
Hey there lovelies. I’m rarely writing- just a reflection of how busy life is these days. But I am not complaining. I’m currently undergoing my district training in my home city Delhi, district south west. Funny thing is, my university is located in this district itself and I cross my college every day on my way to work. Each morning, a memory or the other ensues as I cross my university. It reminds me of how much life has changed, while reminding me of where my roots lie. Just the perfect amount of motivation you need in the morning. Work in Delhi is so diverse. I was told that Delhi being urban won’t have much revenue or development work, but evidently that’s not the case in my district, which still has a healthy chunk of villages. I’ve been visiting fields (yes, they exist in Delhi!) for demarcation with the revenue team. Revenue work also involves going through ages old revenue records, maintained painstakingly by the revenue department. Much of the old records from 1950s-80s in Delhi are handwritten in a language that is an amalgamation of Hindi and Urdu, and it involves quite a lot of scratching my head to understand what the text means! Consolidation is chakbandi, record of rights is khatauni… and the list continues. Apart from revenue work, there’s a lot of exciting development work too. The Ramsar Convention that I read about while preparing for UPSC surprisingly came to life in the form of a file looking into wetlands in Delhi. And then there is the social sector work- health, education and gender— issues that attract so many of us to the civil services. I may not be seasoned enough to say this, but here goes- the platform that the IAS offers to affect change is just unparalleled. It is actually insane; the latitude you get to do things and get working. There’s too much work to be done and too many files to be read. Here’s hoping I don’t let myself down in this journey.Until next time,
Saumya

TAKEAWAYS FROM THE BHARAT DARSHAN February 3, 2019February 3, 2019Saumya Sharma
Hey there everyone! The 50 day long winter study tour (or bharat darshan as we fondly call it), is over and I am back home. This lazy Sunday morning finally has given me the required temporal space to write down a blog post. A lot has happened since I last wrote here. The foundation course has ended, leaving behind a multitude of beautiful memories that I am going to cherish for life. The highlights were the Himalayan Study Tour, Village Visit, India Day, Fete, Athletic Meet, Cross Country Run and the many short treks that kept us busy throughout. It isn’t that it was all fun and no work. We had exams and other assignments tosubmit too.
While the foundation course was indeed a highlight, the actual learning for me began with the bharat darshan. We left Mussoorie on 13th December 2018, and the tour ended on 1 February 2019 in Delhi. I was in Group 10, and our route was East-South. We covered Arunachal- Assam-Jharkhand- West Bengal-Tamil Nadu-Andaman-Karnataka-Kerala and ended it in Delhi-NCR. The aspects to the learning I gained during the bharat darshan were many, and here I will try to summarise them (in no particular order ofpriority):
* Spending 50 days with the same group of 18 people teaches you a lot about yourself and about interpersonal relationships. There always remains a significant scope for growth in this domain. And to be alive is to grow continuously. * We met a lot of people doing exceedingly well in their respective fields. If there was a common thread that ran through all those people who stood out, it was there humility. There is a lot of attractiveness is underplaying oneself and letting your work speak for itself. * Bharat darshan is where a lot of us went to our cadres for the first time. For instance, I visited both Arunachal and Andaman. The feeling of being in your cadre, and meeting your seniors there is quite overwhelming. It pushes you and motivates you. You start picturing your future, and to be honest it is so exciting to be able to do that with the certainty that all of it will actually behappening.
* The scope for improvement in our villages, towns and cities is huge. At the same time, you see how a single person can be so instrumental in bringing about change. I saw this in Dhemaji, Assam where a few amazing ground level workers are responsible for the excellent implementation of the PMGKY. This learning reminded me of how significant a single person’s actions can be. Like Gandhi said, be the change you want to see. * The importance of reading just cannot be overstated. I used to read quite a lot. But post February 2017, when I started preparing for UPSC, my habit of reading for leisure declined drastically. In bharat darshan, I saw how those at the top of their game are so well read. For 2019, my wish is to pick up my habit of reading and to flourish atit.
* The importance of traveling- traveling opens your mind up like nothing else. It shakes you out of your comfort zone and exposes you to different cultures. It tells you how much you can adapt and how much of a sport you are! Being a travel freak myself, I am so thankful to the bharat darshan for giving me the opportunity of traversing the country in such a unique way. The end of bharat darshan marks the commencement of the block leave. I am home for a week, before I leave for Phase 1 of the IAS professionaltraining at LBSNAA.
Such are the days now. Signing off, as I slip in my blanket with a cup of coffee and a copy of Kahlil Gibran’s ‘The Prophet’. See you, beautiful people! LIKE THIS? SHARE IT:* More

21 DAYS AT LBSNAA
September 16, 2018September 16, 2018Saumya
Sharma
Hey there! As promised in my last post, this post is being uploaded from my room in the Ganga Hostel at the Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration (or as we call it, labasnaa). It has been three full weeks here, and now I know why the name Happy Valley is so apt for this place. Life here has been beautiful. It has been 21 days of friendships which only seem to get stronger with time, and endless conversations over paranthas and maggi. It has also been a time of knowing how far I can push myself physically, by successfully completing three not-so-easy treks, managing to wake up every day at 5:30 am for PT, and completing the (in)famous trek from Ganga hostel to the Officer’s Mess dressed up in a saree. Up until now, us officer trainees of the 93rd FC have had the opportunity of attending lectures by the Metro Man of India E. Sreedharan, Aruna Roy, and Vijay Kumar IPS who lead Operation Cocoon leading to Veerappan’s encounter. We also got the opportunity of having a wonderful sensitisation to the issues faced by the differently abled. This issue is quite close to my heart, and so it was a great experience visiting institutes centered on visual and intellectual disabilities. The FC has also allowed me to tick two things off my bucket list- Learning Punjabi (I know how to speak it but did not know the Gurmukhi script), and learning bhangra. One of my most cherished memories from the last three weeks is the day I took oath to uphold the Constitution of India in my capacity as a civil servant. Singing the national anthem right after taking the oath was an altogether overwhelming experience. It reminded me of the immense responsibility that I now have upon me, and how the real journey has begun only now. Getting a rank in the UPSC exam is just the first step in the larger scheme of things, and one just cannot get complacent after arriving here. This blog post is coming so late because the FC keeps us very busy. Mornings are the most hectic- wake up at 5:30 am, run to the Happy Valley ground for PT, get dressed (tying a saree et al), run to the mess, and then run to the class. Initially it was difficult, considering the nature of the terrain in the academy, but now it seems to be getting quite ordinary. Evenings are spent either playing squash, or attending workshops and events. The academy has the Home Turf, a place where we get decent maggi and momos; outside the academy we have the Ganga and Pooja Dhabas which are your go-to shops for food and grocery shopping; we also have the Charleville Book Cafe serving good coffee and pancakes; and the Mall Road is close by too. Let’s just say that the foodie in me does not miss Delhi very much. All in all, this place has been great until now. The views are enchanting, the colonial architecture marvellous, the company great, and the memories magnificent. Signing off! Will be back soon with another blog post untilthen, adios!

Life as I know it
AN INVITATION FROM THE PRESIDENT OF INDIA August 16, 2018August 16, 2018Saumya Sharma
Hello all of you! It has been a long time since I wrote anything here. Life has been extremely hectic ever since the results have come out. Social engagements, travelling, shopping for the foundation course, and binge watching Netflix is eating up most of my time these days. This post is going to be about an event which I feel was one of the most legendary events I have ever been to- The At Home Reception at the Rashtrapati Bhawan. A brief background about why this event was special to me- One, in 2014 I had the opportunity to visit the Rashtrapati Bhawan to watch a dance recital. I wondered then about how it would feel to come to this place again but for a better occasion. Not once did I imagine that four years later this would actually happen! And two, last year while preparing for CSE, I read in the Indian Express that President Kovind has significantly trimmed down the invite list of the At Home reception- from about 1500-2000, he brought it down to 500. That made me wonder about who these 500 people are. To be there in the midst of that limited gathering today was something I didn’t see happening sosoon.
So today, when I walked into the Rashtrapati Bhawan, I could not help but thank the universe for making this happen. I got a chance to interact with the who’s who of India- the president, the prime minister, the army chief, the air force chief, cabinet ministers, senior bureaucrats… the list goes on! So engrossed were we UPSC toppers there, that none of us were able to eat the snacks being served there at the high tea! The highlight of the evening for me was my meeting with two women. First, I got to talk to Mrs. Nirmala Seetharaman, our defence minister. Now let me tell you why this meeting was special for me. Last year, a picture was published in the Indian Express of Mrs. Seetharaman chairing a meeting with the Air Force chiefs. I found that picture to be iconic. After all, it was a woman leading a meeting of senior experienced men on a subject matter that is traditionally dominated by males! I was so impressed with it, that I cut that picture out from the newspaper and pasted it in my room. It served as a great source of motivation for me while I was preparing. Today, when I met her, I told her about this. While talking to her, it felt as if life has come full circle. Second, I got to interact with the captain of INS Tarini! I love oceans and I love ships. The fact that I am talking to the woman who was current affairs for my UPSC preparation last year made it so very special. We spoke at length about her journey of circumventing the globe. All in all, it was a wonderful event indeed. Here are a few screenshots from the event, that I am sharing with youall:

Life as I know it
ON SYMPATHY
July 10, 2018July 12, 2018Saumya

Recently, I was giving an interview for a TV show. The anchor, on knowing about my story, said something that stuck with me. He said- you don’t like sympathy. That made me think. It is true. I have always hated being sympathised with. Back in 2010, I had the option of becoming the ‘bechara’ person who lost 90-95% of her hearing. It was a very valid excuse for me to underperform in life. It was also a perfect excuse for myself to lower expectations I had for my life.Yet, I did not.
When I got that terrible fever during the week of CSE Mains 2017, I had the perfect excuse for not writing the exams. My reason would have been a perfectly valid justification for not attempting the exams and wanting to write it the next year. After all, no revisions were done, and I did not perform the way I wanted to. It was a cogent reason for anyone to sympathise with me. Yet, I went to write the exams. As I look back, I wonder why. What was it that pushed me? And it appears to me, that it was my desire to not be in a position to give excuses for my own failures, when I did not even try. It was about wanting to give my best, so that I can accept the outcome with the knowledge that I tried my best. It was about wanting to avoid sympathy. Because my experience tells me that sympathy is harmful forgrowth.
Empathy is important, even essential when we live and thrive in society. But sympathy? It makes you the object of pity. It lowers society’s expectations of you. It lowers your own expectations from yourself. It makes you complacent in whatever you do, because since you take yourself to be someone with whom a lot of injustice has happened, any little thing you do becomes a major accomplishment. It hinders your potential to succeed in life. I now think that the best of outcomes are reached when one does not chicken out. When one faces things bravely. When one takes challenges head on. When one explores the full range of her/ his potential. Because that is what being human is about. To be brave. To not let things pull you down. As Hannah Gadsby said in her powerful show Nanette- “To yield and not break, that is incredible strength.” Go ahead, find that incredible strength within you. Let nothing breakyou. God speed!
