THE HISTORY OF RYE
The History of Rye Castle Museum. By Allan Downend, slightly adapted from the booklet An Introduction to Rye Castle Museum (1999) with some additional information from Geoffrey S Bagley and from Kenneth M Clark The Story of the Ypres Tower and Rye Museum (1975). Read more here. THE HISTORY OF RYE CASTLE MUSEUM AND YPRES TOWER The idea of using Rye’s former jail (the Ypres Tower) as a museum was first mooted in 1889 by the Rye Literary Society but it was to be another forty years before a Rye Museum was established and sixty-five before the Ypres Tower became its home. It was Leopold Vidler, author of A New History of Rye (1934) , who managed to establish the first SHIP BUILDING IN RYE Models of ships built in Rye may be seen at the East Street museum. Several ships were owned and traded on behalf of their Rye builders. One such ship was the clipper schooner Marian Zagury built for the fruit trade. The Illustrated London News credited Hessel and Holmes with having built the handsomest vessel ever built in the Portof Rye.
MORE ON MEDIEVAL RYE, EAST SUSSEX Rye was the most famous pirate port in the 13th century, with a reputation for atrocities. Its privateering was sanctioned by royalty, the Crown claiming 1/5th of the booty. Smuggling developed from the time when Edward I (1239-1307) imposed customs duties on wool. It got worse from the late 1550s because of new customs impositions. NORMAN AND MEDIEVAL TIMES 1066. King Edward the Confessor died on 5 January 1066 and Harold was crowned King on 6 January 1066. William the Conqueror landed at Pevensey with 400 large and 1000 small ships on 28th September 1066. This area of coast between Rye and Hastings and inland to include Brede (the Manor of Rameslie), was a good place to land as it already SMUGGLING IN RYE & ON ROMNEY MARSH Smuggling is known to have existed in the Rye area since the 13th Century, when Edward I introduced the Customs system. The earliest references to smuggling are a warrant in 1301 to search for wool, hides, bales and all other merchandise and persons attempting to export money or silver. THE HISTORY OF THE CINQUE PORTS The History of the Cinque Ports. There is much controversy about the origin of the Cinque Ports (pronounced ‘sink’, not as in French) but the organisation that we recognise dates back to the 11th Century, during the reign of Edward the Confessor. It was started by the ports Hastings, Romney, Hythe, Dover and Sandwich for mutual protectionHISTORY OF RYE
The Lamb family were the greatest power in Rye for 250 years but their house is probably more famous as the home of the expatriate American writer Henry James and later, the writer E.F. Benson. It is a modest brick-fronted Georgian house completed by James Lamb in 1723, the same year in which he became Mayor for the first time. A visitor from the 1840s visiting Rye today would recognise much of it: the Landgate, the street pattern within the walls, Ypres Tower, the stone buildings that survived the fire of 1377, many of the houses, the cobbles, but oh, how much else has changed! A VERY SUCCESSFUL CRAFT AFTERNOON A very successful Craft Afternoon. A very well behaved group of children and their parents came along to the half term children’s craft afternoon at East Street Museum on Wednesday the 30th of October. Our two museum sites, RCM East Street and RCM Ypres Tower, are just a short walk apart in the medieval town of Rye. Our exhibits tell the stories of the history of Rye, its inhabitants and the surrounding area. We have lots of interesting books on these subjects for sale on our bookstalls at both sites too.
