IMPORTANT MESSAGE – COVID-19 PLEASE READ!
RYBL’S PRIORITY IS TO ENSURE THE SAFETY AND HEALTH OF ITS BASEBALL COMMUNITY.
As the COVID-19 Coronavirus situation evolves, your RYBL Executive are monitoring Public Health and Baseball Ontario’s websites to gather information regarding this serious outbreak. RYBL’s priority is to ensure the safety and health of its baseball community. Our outdoor baseball season is scheduled to being on May 1, 2020. This date remains unchanged. Pre-season training and other team events are cancelled from now until the end of the school closure (April 5, 2020), at which point our organization will re-evaluate the situation. RYBL’S REFUND POLICY is available at https://rybl.com/about-us/refund-policy/. This Refund Policy will be updated to include a scenario in which the outdoor baseball season is delayed or cancelled. Another RYBL update will be sent by April 5th. We understand that there are many unanswered questions and concerns. COVID-19 Update
PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE FOR 2020! WELCOME TO THE 2020 ROYAL YORK BASEBALL LEAGUE SEASON. We at RYBL strive to provide a sport that is fun for players, coaches and parents in a safe environment. In 2019 we saw a strong registration of over 1180 players with a huge contingent at our Blastball entry level – which certainly bodes well for our future. Photo courtesy: J.P. Antonacci, Canadian Baseball Network STRUCTURAL / PROCESS CHANGES FORTHCOMING While grassroots baseball is certainly strong and vibrant in Etobicoke, there are two significant structural/process changes coming for 2020.
BASEBALL ONTARIO’S HOSTILE TAKE-OVER OVER OF RYBL HOUSE LEAGUE BASEBALL
Baseball Ontario has (legally or illegally) asserted legal authority over all House League players in Ontario’s Baseball Ontario member associations, and this is going to affect RYBL House League for 2020. Specifically, Baseball Ontario is requiring all potential 2020 Royal York Baseball House League players to register and become members of Baseball Ontario – in what they call centralized or dual registration. Also, forcing RYBL to hand over registration information to Baseball Ontario including child name, sex, address, birthdate, and parent name, address, and phone number. Unless accepting this dictate, Baseball Ontario has indicated that it will ban RYBL from Baseball Ontario play – which would adversely affect the 2000+ players and parents in RYBL’s Rep, Select and House League programs. As a league we have consistently opposed this draconian approach, and lobbied against it. In a meeting with Baseball Ontario’s President Ed Quinlan on December 13, 2019, Mr. Quinlan admitted that this approach was “high handed”, but indicated that it was necessary to allow Baseball Ontario to qualify for greater Provincial funding and to allow it to create better corporate sponsorship relationships. Mr. Quinlan indicated that Baseball Ontario registration (and information pass on) was required for all 2020 RYBL House League players. RYBL must either adopt the system as presented by Baseball Ontario or “find another league to play in”. Short of challenging this high-handed approach in the Ontario court system – which we are considering, but could be very costly – RYBL, very regrettably, has no choice but to comply. Also new for 2020 is Rowan’s Law . On July 1, 2019 the Province of Ontario introduced Rowan’s Law concerning concussions in sports for all players under 26. As part of the registration process it is now mandatory that athletes under 26 years of age, parents of athletes under 18, coaches, team trainers and officials confirm every year that they have reviewed Ontario’s Concussion Awareness Resources. You will be asked to review and confirm same during registration. ROYAL YORK INITIATIVES DIAMOND UPGRADES
In cooperation with the city, RYBL continues to upgrade our diamonds. In 2019 we upgraded Tom Riley infield and totally reworked the batting cage with new mesh and synthetic turf interior surface. Infield upgrades were completed at Ourland, Rotary & Connorvale North diamonds. Further, with monetary support from Humber College and ProTeach we installed a new state of the art LED wireless control scoreboard at Connorvale South as the final touch to this new diamond in the RYBL family. Looking forward into 2020 we will be upgrading Lambton Kingsway North, Queensway North and South and Westway as well as replacing dugouts at Queensway South. SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM
Humber College has been a strong supporter of RYBL for many years. Your executive has decided from 2020 to 2025, that $1500.00 will be given to Humber College for two – $750.00 scholarships – one to the Hawks baseball team and one to the Hawks women’s fastball team. MODEST FEE INCREASE
It has been 3 years since we have raised fees, yet our cost continue to rise. For 2020 House League fees have been increased by $5.00 across the board to reflect the approximate 8% increase, in one instance, in permit fees from the city over that time frame. RYBL continues to look for cost saving measures while continuing to deliver a top notch program. CO-ED TBALL
New for 2020, the RYBL will introduce Jr. Co-ed Tball , a much more advanced version of Blastball mirroring Tball rules for a better baseball experience. We hope this will be more fun for players, coaches and parents.

The event is once again generously sponsored by the Etobicoke Baseball Association, Royal York Baseball League, and Ontario Women’s Baseball League. UPDATE:

Remebering last summer… Teams joined us from across the GTA, Haldimand county, Alberta, D.C. and Rhode Island, with individual players also participating from the East Coast. The feedback that we got from coaches, parents and players was all very positive; comments included that it was a great tournament and they really enjoyed being a part of it and are looking forward to next year! Teams were very impressed by the quality of our diamonds, the standards for umpiring, and the overall welcoming environment. Teams are already asking about next year’s tournament which is a true tribute to good organization and a well run event. For a team from Alberta, it was their first opportunity to play against another all-girls baseball team, nevermind in a tournament! Like any great event, it always comes down to the people behind the scenes to make it happen. Thank you so much for all of your support and efforts, as Alan always says, RYBL is great because of the people who make it work.

Karen & Shawna-Marie Mega Tournament 2019 photos MEGA TOURNAMENT CONTACT Yes, at Royal York, we set a super high standard with the overall organization of the event that included a tournament logo, programs, t-shirts, diamond maintenance, diamond clean up, umpire scheduling, among so so many other things, as well as team and diamond scheduling that involved 168 players across 14 teams. We even managed to weather a couple of good downpours with very little upset thanks to some special last minute umpire co-ordination and flexibility which can be challenging in a weekend tournament.
