Held at a resort hotel overlooking the beach and separated by freeways from both Old Town San Diego and southern California’s suburban sprawl, this year’s WHA conference was in an ideal location to examine the boundaries between rural and urban spaces, as my panel sought to do: “DEAR MISS CUSHMAN”: THE DREAMS OF EVA MCCOY, 1874 “Dear Miss Cushman”: The Dreams of Eva McCoy, 1874 Sara Lampert, University of South Dakota . As an early republic historian working on the gender history of commercial entertainment, I am always on the lookout for Carrie Meebers, or women and girls who can open up the longstanding trope of the country girl seduced by the city.
