NEW VARIETIES REQUIRED FOR ADAPTATION TO CLIMATE CHANGE Modified varieties can help offset declines in yields due to climate change and even significantly increase global production. For this, new, locally adapted varieties are needed on a substantial part of global arable land, according to a study published in May 2021 by an international research team. IMPROVING THE SEED SECTOR TO STRENGTHEN THE RESILIENCE OF How to feed the world in times of pandemics and climate change was the topic of this year’s Global Forum for Food and Agriculture – GFFA. In contrast to ecological agriculture, agroecology does not have set rules. GENETIC MAKE-UP OF DESTRUCTIVE CROP PEST UNRAVELLED Genetic make-up of destructive crop pest unravelled. Researchers have decoded the genetic make-up of whitefly species that spread plant diseases and damage crops, raising hopes for tackling the devastating pest. Whitefly, Bemisia tabaci, is one of the top 100 crop pests in the world, causing damage to plants and spreading plant diseases.THE RAIFFEISEN IDEA

Here, the focus was on whether cooperatives can contribute to sustainable development. TSETSE-FLY TRAP: BIOTECHNOLOGY FOR AFRICA’S RURAL In Africa, the tsetse fly, carrier of sleeping sickness, has so far been attacked with insecticides or caught in traps, Bioscientists at Frankfurt University have developed a process using a biotechnological technique to produce the attractant for the traps in yeasts. The attractants could in future be produced cheaply and locally in ruralareas of Africa.
