Road Trip USA is built around eleven cross-country road trips covering thousands of miles of two-lane road. SCENIC DRIVES ON MICHIGAN'S UPPER PENINSULA Distance: 9 miles; 0.5 hour. Starting point: M-26 at Silver River Falls. Ending Point: Copper Harbor. Without question the most spectacular drive in Michigan, the high-vista route offers an unmatched view of Copper Harbor and the rolling forests of the Keweenaw. Stop midway to soak in the panorama of Lake Superior. THE ROAD TO NOWHERE: DRIVING US-83 CROSS-COUNTRY Driving the Road to Nowhere. Once the only entirely paved route from Canada to “Old Mexico” (as hard-to-find postcards along the route still say), US-83 is still likely the shortest—from Swan River, Manitoba, dead south to Brownsville, Texas, and beyond to Matamoros, Mexico, seemingly without turning once. ROUTE 66 THROUGH SANTA FE, NEW MEXICO Another downtown street, Old Pecos Trail, carried Route 66 for its first dozen years before Santa Fe was bypassed in favor of Albuquerque in 1937. If you’re interested in classical music, the Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival (505/982-1890 or 888/221-9836) performances take place June to August in a variety of atmospheric old Santa Febuildings.

After the signing of the Fort Laramie Treaty in 1868, the Sicangu Lakota, under the guidance of Spotted Tail, were moved five times before finally being settled on this reservation, one of the smallest on the Great Plains. Without question the most spectacular drive in Michigan, the high-vista route offers an unmatched view of Copper Harbor and the rolling forests of the Keweenaw. Stop midway to soak in the panorama of Lake Superior. DRIVING THE BLUE RIDGE PARKWAY Milepost 305.1. US-221, which used to carry the parkway before the viaduct was built, leads a mile south to 5,946-foot Grandfather Mountain (828/733-4337 or 800/468-7325, daily, $20 adults), the highest peak in Blue Ridge, now a private park with nature trails, a zoo, and the famous Mile-High Swinging Bridge. ROSEBUD INDIAN RESERVATION South of White River, US-83 rolls its way across the Rosebud Indian Reservation. After the signing of the Fort Laramie Treaty in 1868, the Sicangu Lakota, under the guidance of Spotted Tail, were moved five times before finally being settled on this reservation, one of the smallest on the Great Plains. The first town you’ll encounter is IDAHO'S BORDER TO BORDER ROUTE: CLAYTON AND SUNBEAM Stanley and Sunbeam both stand along the northern border of the more than 750,000-acre Sawtooth National Recreation Area, which extends south for over 20 miles of untrammeled meadows, forests, and lakes and includes the headwaters of many major Idaho rivers. It also holds one of the nicest places to stay in the Rockies: the historic Redfish THE ROAD TO NOWHERE: DRIVING US-83 CROSS-COUNTRY Driving the Road to Nowhere. Once the only entirely paved route from Canada to “Old Mexico” (as hard-to-find postcards along the route still say), US-83 is still likely the shortest—from Swan River, Manitoba, dead south to Brownsville, Texas, and beyond to Matamoros, Mexico, seemingly without turning once. 4 SCENIC ALASKA ROAD TRIP IDEAS 185 Miles. Open seasonally, the Top of the World Highway runs 185 miles (about a six-hour drive) north from Tok and east into Canada’s Dawson City. For real road-trip cred, make this an enormous loop by driving south to Whitehorse and then coming back on the Alcan Highway, for a total loop distance of about 900 miles or 20 hours of driving ROUTE 66 THROUGH SANTA FE, NEW MEXICO Another downtown street, Old Pecos Trail, carried Route 66 for its first dozen years before Santa Fe was bypassed in favor of Albuquerque in 1937. If you’re interested in classical music, the Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival (505/982-1890 or 888/221-9836) performances take place June to August in a variety of atmospheric old Santa Febuildings.
SIGHTS ALONG ROUTE 66 THROUGH ILLINOIS The only real city along Route 66 is the Illinois state capital, Springfield, which has preserved its sections of Route 66 alongside a wealth of places connected to the namesake president here in the “Land of Lincoln.”. Dozens of small towns across the state play up their Route 66 connections, and most boast at least one true old-roadlandmark.
TAKE A SCENIC DRIVE ALONG OLD FALL RIVER ROAD Plan a scenic “Sunday drive” along Old Fall River Road on any summer day to explore the biodiversity of Rocky Mountain National Park. This approximately 35-mi (56-km) loop drive travels through the montane, subalpine, and tundra ecosystems. During summer and fall, both Old Fall River Road and Trail Ridge Road are open. Almost all the national chain hotels and motels have operations in Springfield, PACIFIC COAST ROUTE: VISITING THE OREGON DUNES Before setting out on any extended exploration, your first stop should be at the heart of the dunes at the U.S. Forest Service-run Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area Visitors Center (541/271-6000) at the junction of US-101 and Hwy-38 in Reedsport, along the Umpqua River SEDONA AND JEROME, ARIZONA ON ROUTE 66 South of Route 66 and I-40 from Ash Fork, or west from Sedona, Hwy-89A makes a wonderfully scenic loop, winding past 7,815-ft (2,382-m) Mingus Mountain into photogenic Jerome (pop. 457; elev. 5,066 ft/1,544 m), the liveliest and most interesting “ghost town” in Arizona. Set on steep streets that switchback up the mountainside, Jerome is an WILLAPA BAY AND HIGHWAY 105 COASTAL DETOUR Highway 105 to Willapa Bay.
