CATARACTS AND DEMENTIA FACTSHEET Factsheet Vision 2020 UK – The right to sight Dementia and Sight Loss Interest Group Cataracts and dementia Cataracts are a very common eye condition in older people. MYOPIA AND PATHOLOGICAL MYOPIA Myopia, also known as “being short sighted”, causes your vision to be blurry in the distance but clearer when looking at things up close. Myopia is a very common focusing problem, and for most people it can easily be corrected using glasses or contact lenses, making vision clear and crisp. Most people with myopia have healthy eyes. CENTRAL SEROUS RETINOPATHY (CSR) Central serous retinopathy (CSR) or central serous chorioretinopathy (CSCR) affects the central area of your retina known as the macula. CSR can cause your vision to be blurred and distorted due to fluid collecting underneath your macula. In most people, CSR gets better on its own and doesn’t cause long-term changes to vision.MACULAR HOLE

PENGUIN RANDOM HOUSE BOOSTS RNIB LIBRARY WITH THOUSANDS One of the world’s largest publishers, Penguin Random House has bolstered the Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB) Talking Books Library by donating all of its audio books to the charity.The new collection currently includes around 6,000 titles and will be gradually added to RNIB’s Talking Book platform in instalments on anongoing basis.

POSTERIOR VITREOUS DETACHMENT Posterior vitreous detachment (PVD) is a condition where your vitreous comes away from the retina at the back of your eye. It details some of the resources you will need to help blind and partially sighted people get started with using essential technology. TRANSITION GUIDE: BRIDGING THE GAP RNIB, in partnership with VICTAR, has produced transition guidance for young people who are blind or partially sighted. The combined impact of social distancing and self-isolation as lockdown eases presents unique challenges to our community and we are doing all we can to help parents of SIGHT LOSS COUNSELLING We offer emotional support through our Sight Loss Counselling team, a group of professional telephone and online counsellors.Our service is accredited by the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and is completely confidential.We are bound by the BACP ethical framework for good practice in counselling. We also comply with the Data Protection Act. PENGUIN RANDOM HOUSE BOOSTS RNIB LIBRARY WITH THOUSANDS 1 day ago · One of the world’s largest publishers, Penguin Random House has bolstered the Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB) Talking Books Library by donating all of its audio books to the charity.The new collection currently includes around 6,000 titles and will be gradually added to RNIB’s Talking Book platform in instalments on an ongoing basis. Assistant apps are applications or programmes which can provide access to information. They are obtained from the online store specific to your device (for Apple devices this is FAMILY SUPPORT AND EVENTS Following on from the amazing success of our autumn and spring events we can now announce another new programme of events for children, young people and their families. Due to the ongoing coronavirus situation we have still suspended our face-to-face events and our new events will all be delivered MONOCULAR VISION (SIGHT IN ONE EYE) Can I still drive? If you have monocular vision, you may still be able to drive a car or motorcycle if your other eye has good enough vision to meet the legal standards set by the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA), and you have adapted to the sight loss in one eye..
