ABOUT THE RIGID HEDDLE LOOM About the Rigid Heddle Loom. Anything that holds warp threads under tension is a loom. The difference between looms is how the warp is held and how the sheds are created. A rigid heddle loom is, in effect, a frame loom. Generally, it has 4 sides but not always. You can weave anything on a frame loom. The industry standard is based on a single strand of cotton that has 840 yards in a pound. A 1/1 yarn would have a single strand of cotton and in one pound of it, would measure 840 yards. In 8 /4 yarn, the top number tells us the size of the threads. In 8/4 the thread used is 8 times thinner than the industry standard so you end up with 6720 COMPLICATED WEAVE STRUCTURES WITH RIGID HEDDLE Complicated Weave Structures with Rigid Heddle. Anything that holds warp under tension is a loom and any weave structure may be woven on any loom. The main purpose of the rigid heddle is to act as a shedding device to create the 2 sheds necessary for the most basic weave structure: "plain weave". Plain weave can come in many forms such asCLASPED WEFT

INDIRECT WARPING
Indirect warping is taking the yarn off the spool, winding it around something for some distance, wrapping it around a peg and following the same path back to the beginning. This is done in batches (bouts). They are tied together to prevent tangling (choke ties) and then put on the loom. The advantage is that this doesn't take up a lot of realWARP SEPARATOR

Rigid heddle was originally invented for and used as a simple shedding device for HOW TO READ A WEAVING DRAFT A rigid heddle weaving draft will look something like this: Reading from right to left, the top gives you the warp colors to put through the slots and holes (threading order). Reading from top to bottom, the right side gives you the weft color to weave by bringing the rigidheddle up and down.
A NEW WEAVER!
A New Weaver! I had the good fortune to spend time with Rob, the son of my greatest benefactor and friend (who is more like family) on Labor Day. He wanted to learn to weave, so I jumped all over that. I started by explaining all the different parts of a loom, choosing yarn (he chose green and purple--I love this kid!), then planning theproject.
PICK UP WEAVING ON THE INKLE LOOM Patterns and charts show you which threads to PICK UP. Here's how to do a simple pick up pattern on the inkle loom with a few threads to get you started. You can use your rigid heddle to weave this. As long as you are creating 2 sheds (which is what the rigid heddle does) you can weave narrow bands with pick up designs. HOW TO USE A PICK UP STICK How to Use a Pick Up Stick. You can do more than tabby (plain weave) with a rigid heddle. You start with Pick Up Control. That's done by pushing your heddle into the down position and inserting a warp separator such as a stick, paper, cardboard or anything into the shed created behind the heddle so that you can see only all the slot threads. Then you use a pick up stick to pick up only thoseBACKSTRAP LOOM
Backstrap Loom. A loom is anything that will hold warp threads under tension. The differences are how the sheds are achieved and how the warps are held. You don't need a fancy loom to be able to weave and produce beautiful fabrics. The most simple of looms, in use today around the world and is probably as old as weaving itself, is thebackstrap
REUSABLE SHOPPING TOTE Reusable Shopping Tote. This is how I make reusable shopping totes from upcycled materials. You can use either plarn (plastic yarn made from shopping bags), tarn (yarn made with stips of t-shirt material ) or rags (fabric cut into strips) in your cloth to make this tote. When woven properly they are very durable, even without alining.
