Catherine Hamlin (1924-2020) came to Ethiopia from Australia in 1959 to work as an obstetrician and gynaecologist at a hospital in Addis Ababa. With her husband Reginald, she pioneered the surgical treatment of obstetric fistula. Despite her family’s poverty, she obtained university level education and was soon committed to the Gandhian Sarvodaya Movement, through which she met her husband, Sankaralingam Jagannathan (born in 1912), also a noted Gandhian. PERCY AND LOUISE SCHMEISER Percy and Louise Schmeiser both received the Environmental Justice 2014 award in regards to the dangers of contamination of indigenous seeds in Peru, Bolivia, Argentina and the United States. Career. Percy (passed away October 13, 2020)and Louise Schmeiser were born in 1931 into farming families in Saskatchewan; one of Canada’s tenprovinces.
