HOW TO PERFORM A PRE-RIDE MOTORCYCLE INSPECTION October 12, 2019 By: Scott2 Comments It’s a beautiful day, the sun is shining, the wind is hardly blowing, and you are ready to hit the open road for a day of riding. Before taking off there are a few things you need to do to ensure your motorcycle is as ready as you are to hit the road. Today we’re looking at how to perform a Pre-Ride Motorcycle Inspection or what’s often referred to as TCLOCS. PRE-RIDE MOTORCYCLE INSPECTION TCLOCS is an acronym that helps to cover the bike from stem to stern, for a quick inspection:T- TIRES AND WHEELS
* Tires- Check tread depth, wear and air pressure * Wheels- See if any spokes are loose or if the rim is bent or cracked. See if it turns freely, but is not loose on the axle.C- CONTROLS
* Inspect levers. Verify they are not bent or broken and moveeasily.
* Check cables for fraying and lubricate them. * Check hoses for cracks, leaks, bulges, and chaffed areas * Make sure the throttle moves freely. Closes easily. Lube ifneeded.
L- LIGHTS & ELECTRICS * Check that the battery terminals are clean and tight and that the electrolyte level is correct. Plus make sure the vent tube is hooked to the vent outlet and not kinked * Check the turn signals and brake lights for proper operation. Make sure the lenses are not cracked or broken * Headlight- Check for proper operation and alignmentO- OIL LEVELS
Check engine oil level plus transmission and primary drive fluidlevels

RIDE IT WRENCH IT- WHERE ARE YOU? October 4, 2019 By: Scottcomment WHAT’S BEEN HAPPENING As usual, work is taking its toll on me. I am on a hellish project. Probably one of the worst I’ve ever had to deal with. Stress at work combined with long work hours is not a healthy combination and I am definitely feeling it. Weekends are pretty much recovery days right now. We might even lose the weekends soon due to the unrealistic and aggressive demands from the client in terms of completion dates. I can’t fully put the blame on work though because part of my absence of publishing new content is due to a new form of adventure.FAIR WEATHER RIDER
Margaret and I purchased an older 2008 Jeep Wrangler. This is something we have wanted for quite some time and decided to get one. We love riding and will continue to ride. What we don’t like is when the weekend comes around and it’s pouring down rain, or it’s over 100 degrees, or its 32 degrees. Call us fair weather riders if you wish but I am not getting on that bike for a pleasure ride under those types of conditions. Getting caught in undesirable weather is understandable if you’re already out on the bike, seeking those conditions out for riding is another. I hate riding in bad weather. For me, there simply is no joy in it. So many weekends the Harley’s sit in silence in the garage hooked to a battery tender. WHY WE PURCHASED THE JEEP We like to experience life in different ways. The Harley’s are one way to do so. The Jeep, however, will deepen some of our travel experiences in ways the bikes cannot. There are a lot of off-road trails to be explored that you probably would not want to ride or could not ride on a Harley. Protruding rocks, mud, tree stumps, even gravel roads would be awful on a Harley. I can’t think of anyone saying how they want to ride a gravel road this upcoming weekend. Some of those types of roads will get you to scenic areas that you will not be able to experience on a Harley. Weather won’t matter anymore. Rain? No Problem. Cold? No Problem. Any type of weather really doesn’t matter for the Jeep. Just hop in and go have an experience! For instance, there are many state parks that have wonderful scenic areas that can only be reached in a 4×4. Sure you could park a bike and hike. It’s more exciting in a Jeep though and offers a whole line of new experiences for us.GOING FORWARD
Ride It Wrench It won’t be going away so no worries there. For the moment it is taking a back seat to our Jeep though. As I said its a 2008 and not in pristine condition. We knew there would be repairs to make and we’re working on that during our weekends right now. I have content on my need to make a bucket list for Ride It Wrench It and will get to it in time. WHY IT’S IMPORTANT TO TRUST YOUR RIDING SKILLS September 14, 2019 By: Scott1 Comment Something we don’t talk enough about as riders are the mental aspect of riding. I think at some point every rider experiences some doubts about riding, rather it’s their ability or their motorcycles. As humans, it’s only natural to have these feelings. The important thing is to acknowledge and deal with them. An insecure rider is a dangerous rider. Most riders start off insecure but in order to truly enjoying riding and be a safe rider, you must learn to trustyour riding skills.
KNOW YOUR ABILITIES
Any rider can propel a motorcycle down the road but not every rider is a skilled rider. Almost daily I see riders on the roads that are clearly a danger to themselves and those around them. There are some basic things you should be able to do and feel confident about while riding a motorcycle. * Riding down the road with control of the motorcycle * Ability to swerve to avoid obstacles in the road * Proper braking technique* U-turn
Yes, a u-turn! There is a reason that it is taught in safety courses. If you are not confident in performing a u-turn I’d suggest you find a safe location and practice. we’ll talk more about that in anotherpost.
KNOW YOUR MOTORCYCLE From day one of Margaret having a motorcycle, I stressed the importance of her knowing her bike. I could tell she was unsure of what I meant but I knew with a little time she would. As time went on and she got to know her friction zone, how far over she could lean, how sharp she could turn and just how much space she needed for a u-turn. She began to discover what I meant by getting to know it. SPENDING TIME RIDING Just like with any relationship the more time you spend with your motorcycle the better you know it and the more you learn to trust the connection between you and your motorcycle. When Margaret first began riding we rode all of the time! She couldn’t get enough and I was more than happy to oblige with all-day rides, dinner rides, or cross-country trips for our vacations. Then last summer Margaret went back to school to work on her nursing degree. Her free-time nose-dived and she actually went months without riding. GETTING BACK ON THE ROAD Last semester she decided not to take any summer classes. We were excited, finally some riding time! Around the time riding season was getting into full swing several people we knew were involved in motorcycle accidents. A few of them were really bad accidents. Those accidents led to her dwelling on them and would play into the mental aspect of riding I mentioned earlier. As soon as school was out and weather permitted we began riding again. At first, she tried not to dwell on the accidents our friends had been in. Soon I started noticing that she was slowing way down in corners or curves. I would check in with her when we were at red lights and when we made stops. She assured me everything was okay. She’d usually answer with something like I just don’t feel super confident today but everything is fine. Later she explained she thought if she kept pushing on she’d regain her confidence. What I didn’t know was she no longer felt in control of the front end of her motorcycle. The more we went out the more she noticed her inability to control her motorcycle. It wasn’t long before she had convinced herself that she was a bad rider. The real problem was she kept attributing the physical problem she was noticing in her motorcycle to the fact that she hadn’t ridden in so long. ACKNOWLEDGING A PROBLEM It’s now around mid-August. The rain is finally letting up and the weather is beautiful. I’m ready to ride! We knew summer would be over soon and nursing school would once again consume Margaret’s time. I wanted to take a long ride and head out to a burger place. We sent a text to some friends to see if they wanted to join us and wewere off.
This is what Margaret said made her realize she needed to speak up: “We hit the first real corner and it’s not terribly sharp or anything but I felt wobbly and unstable. I had to really start slowing down in corners and turns that shouldn’t require it. Finally, it hit me that maybe the problem wasn’t me, maybe it was my motorcycle. I knew the issue was usually in turns and corners. I then notice it was mainly right-hand turns and corners with a speed of about 30-35 mph. As the day went on I knew I had a mechanical issue and needed to tell Scott what had been going on”. ASSESSING THE PROBLEM The next morning we decided to take a look at her motorcycle and see if we could identify the issue. I don’t usually ride her motorcycle but she asked me to take it around the block. Yep, she was still doubting herself just a bit. As I rode it around the neighborhood making right turns and even just leaning the bike to the right side the handlebars would begin violently shaking, even at low speeds. I pulled back into the garage and said: “How the hell have you been riding that?”. I saw the look of relief come over her face and then she exclaims ‘Whew, I wasn’t crazy or a bad rider, something was really wrong with it.” Because of our schedules and the multitude of things that may have been causing the issue we made the decision to have the motorcycle towed into the dealership. WHAT WAS WRONG WITH THE BIKE Finally: What was wrong with the bike? The steering head bearings went bad. Replacing those is quite a bit of work. For us and this situation, it was a good move to pay for the repair. The cost of the repair was very reasonable. In just a few days we were able to pick the bike up and get back on the road. You can read more about the mechanical issues in this postif you’re
interested.
REGAINING CONFIDENCE It only took Fort Worth Harley a few days to repair her bike. The evening we picked it up we decided we’d two-up on my motorcycle to get there and then head out for a dinner ride. The first turn out of the dealership was a right turn. So far so good. We took some back roads to get to Del Norte Taco in Godley, TX. Out of habit, she started off slowing down as she reached turns and corners. I kept an eye on her in my mirrors and I could see her slowly getting more comfortable and speeding up. By the time we headed home, She was smiling again and leaning into the corners and curves. She’s had her bike back for a few weeks now and each time she get’s on it I can see her gaining back a little more confidence.LESSONS LEARNED
We learned a lot in the last few months but the biggest one was Margaret learned to speak up when something seems off. If she had just told me the first time that she thought the front end seemed wobbly we would have had it fixed way back in April or May of this year. She let her pride get in the way and that put both of us in danger. The other thing she learned was to trust her ability. There was no reason for her to assume just because she hadn’t ridden frequently that suddenly she wouldn’t be able to handle her motorcycle. She would have had a lot more fun this summer if she hadn’t spent so many rides questioning her abilities as a rider. Looking back I was reminded of the importance of truly feeling confident as a rider. That’s why I wanted to go ahead and address the issue in this post. In the coming months, we’ll dig deeper intoriding safety.

HOW TO CARE FOR LEATHER MOTORCYCLE GEAR August 23, 2019 By: Scottcomment Keeping your leather clean and lubricated can prevent brittleness, all the while maintaining suppleness and strength. Leather motorcycleriding gear really
takes a pounding from the weather and road grime. Both of our vests were in need of cleaning and conditioning so we decided to do a blog post and video. Let us know in the comments if you have any questions about how to care for leather motorcycle gear. HOW TO CLEAN LEATHER The first step in caring for your gear is to clean off the dirt andgrime.
SUPPLIES
*
* Microfiber Cleaning Cloth * Saddle Soap. We suggest Fiebing’s signature products. They are trusted and used by professionals and have a long history of superior products. * Mild dish soap like Dawn or PalmoliveDIRECTIONS
* Dampen cloth or sponge with a soapy water mixture. Make sure the cloth is not very wet. You should not be able to wring water from it. * Wipe the leather gear with the towel making sure to clean it asneeded.
* After cleaning with the soapy water mixture wipe the leather gear with a damp towel that does not have any soap on it. This will removeany soap residue.
* Dampen a clean cloth or sponge with water. Again, it should not bevery wet.
* Rub lightly over soap to produce lather * Apply to the leather surface * When dry, polish with a soft cloth for light luster_CAUTION:_
_Oil may permanently darken light-colored leather. Do not use on suedeleathers._
HOW TO MOISTURIZE OR LUBRICATE LEATHER The second step in caring for leather motorcycle gear is to moisturize or lubricate. Over time the leather dries out and needs to have moisture put back in it.SUPPLIES
*
* Sponge or microfiber cleaning cloth * Neats oil or leather conditioner. We suggest Fiebing’s signature products. They are trusted and used by professionals and have a long history of superior products.DIRECTIONS
A small amount of oil goes a long way, so be careful you don’t use too much. If you have any scrap leather, it may be a good idea to teston that.
* Pour a small amount of oil into a small container. * Touch the applicator, a sponge or a cloth, into the oil and then to the leather, working it in a circular motion. * When you first apply the oil, it will penetrate quickly and the area will darken – it may be spotty and uneven. Don’t panic. * Overlap the first application with a second. You will notice lighter areas that may need a little more oil. As the oil penetrates, it will even out. After 24 hours, the dark color will lighten to its final tone. Be careful not to use too much neatsfoot oil. It will do more harm than good. You don’t want to soak your item in oil. It can actually take the life out of the leather, draw dirt into the open pores and sweat oil out in the hotsun.
Caring for your leather will help keep all of your leathers looking new for years to come. SOFTAIL DELUXE IN THE SHOP August 17, 2019 By: Scott1 Comment Yes, that’s right, we sent Margaret’s Softail Deluxe to the shop for repairs. On the last ride, she said the handlebars were shaking when she made right turns. We got home and I took it out for a test ride. Shaking was probably an understatement. When making any move towards the right the handlebars began violently shaking. It was extremely unsafe and I couldn’t believe she rode it home being that bad. I didn’t even want to ride it to the dealership for repairs and opted instead to have Fort Worth Harley Davidson pick it up for us. Better to be safe above all else. We like our local dealership and have complete faith in their work. The service manager Greg is probably one of the most honest and fair people I have ever known and a couple of the service reps, both Jacob and Sam have always taken care of our needs and kept us informed of progress, and the techs are very good. I know what some of you are probably thinking at this point of reading. Why am I not doing the repairs? Fair question.NO TIME
First: I work full time in construction. The job site I am currently working at has no air condition, it’s hitting 100 degrees in North Texas right now and is over 110 inside the building I am working in. I am not a young buck anymore and quite frankly the job is wearing me out to the point I have no energy at the end of the week. The last thing I want to do is spend my weekend in the garage which is also over 100 degrees working on the bike when I need to recover to make it through the upcoming week.SAFETY FIRST
Second: Safety First! No exceptions! The problem with her bike could be attributed to many factors: out of balance wheel, out of round wheel, tire damage, wheel bearings, collapsed fork spring, or steering head bearings. That means a lot of time going through each of the possibilities. There are specific tools for some of these areas of work that I do not have. A correct diagnosis is necessary for safety and the dealership has the tools to correctly perform the work.QUALITY OF LIFE
Third: Quality of life. I work to make money to spend as necessary. Because of point one and two, letting a certified HD technician diagnose and perform this repair was worth paying for especially since this was a safety issue. I simply don’t have to worry about it. Sometimes purchasing the tools for a job and doing the work is cheaper than taking the bike into a shop. This time without knowing exactly what was wrong I didn’t want to start purchasing a bunch of specialized tools to troubleshooting the issue. WHAT WAS WRONG WITH THE BIKE Finally: What was wrong with the bike? The steering head bearings went bad. Replacing those is quite a bit of work. For us and this situation, it was a good move to pay for the repair and I feel good about it. The cost was more than reasonable to the point I was kind of excited when Jacob called with the problem and estimate. Sometimes it’s reasonable to have someone else perform the work. Don’t get stuck in the mindset that every time a repair or maintenance task needs to be done that you have to do it. It’s all right to perform work at your comfort level or even if you simply don’t want to do it for whatever reason as I did on this one. We should work on our bikes because we enjoy wrenching on them and want to. Wrenching should not be a grind or disheartening when you do it. BOLIVAR STREET BBQ- SANGER, TX July 27, 2019 By: Scottcomment We started the day at Fort Worth Harley Davidson to get a couple of oil filters for the bikes. Oil changes are just around the corner for both of them and we just ordered our supply of Amsoil which will arrive Monday.BOLIVAR STREET BBQ
Next was a short 200 mile round trip to Sanger, TX. We wanted to ride some of the FM roads around Lake Ray Roberts and Sanger has a BBQ place we decided to try out. I’ll tip my hat or helmet in our case to the staff and food at Bolivar Street BBQ . They were very friendly and accommodating. The BBQ was also incredible. I had sliced brisket, ribs, and jalapeno cheese sausage with sides of baked beans that had huge chunks of sausage in it along with brisket mac & cheese. Everything was outstanding. The sausage was beyond good. Probably one of the best I’ve ever had. The restaurant is low key, quiet, and very comfortable. This place is well worth the ride and with the lake roads makes for a perfect day on the bikes.THE ROUTE
We took FM-51 to FM-455 and headed East to Sanger, TX. where we stopped for lunch at Bolivar St. BBQ. Next we continued on FM-455 heading east to US-377. Then it was North until we came to FM-922. We turned Left heading West to Valley View, TX and finally Era, TX where we headed South on FM-51 to come full circle on our lake ride. It is a beautiful ride with lots of bridges and a long haul across a dam. You can smell the fresh water and with the wind blowing the air temperature was perfect. It was nice to get the bikes out again on a decent ride. We’ve been taking some little half day jaunts lately so this made for a good day of riding.
