One of the non-Tempoint design elements that appeared on the Wahl Fountain Pen was a sturdy and attractive lever as illustrated on the N o 73 Wahl Pen above. This lever, with a distinct “break” or hump midway along its length, came from the Boston Fountain Pen Company; it is also visible on the sterling silver Boston pen at the top of thispage.
RICHARD'S COLLECTION, VINTAGE AMERICAN PENS, PAGE 6 Next is a pen that’s something of an odd duck in the Imperial lineup. This pen, an Imperial I, has a Stylpoint nib (like that of a contemporaneous cartridge pen) and a narrow cap band, and it uses a modified Touchdown system with a short sac and a solid piston plunger. Its gold-plated steel nib is a medium, and the pen is 5" capped and 5"posted.

Arguably the best Sheaffer pen since the PFM, the cartridge/converter-filling Targa by Sheaffer is a sleek metal-bodied postmodern pen that features the PFM’s reliable and elegant Inlaid Nib, and Sheaffer produced it in a tremendous range of lacquer colors and metal finishes, more than 70 in all. The incredible range of finishes has contributed to the Targa’s lasating popularity with THE PARKER VACUMATIC The Speedline Filler: In 1937, Parker redesigned the filling mechanism so that the plunger does not lock in the depressed position. This change made the filler quicker and easier to use. This change accompanied a change in overall styling; Parker called the new version the Vacumatic Speedline, and the revised filler has become known to collectors as the Speedline filler. REMOVING AND INSTALLING LEVERS The easiest way to remove the pressure bar in these pens is usually to grasp the bar’s end with alligator forceps and pull while twisting the forceps back and forth through about turns if to unscrew and screw in the pressure bar. The short arm of the bar may scratch the interior of the barrel when you do this, but in most cases this is not a problem. in pens whose levers are mounted usingTHE PARKER 45
When Parker introduced its first cartridge-filling fountain pen in 1960, the pen wore a name that tied it to the ubiquitous Colt .45 Peacemaker: the Parker 45. The name was a cultural nod, of course, but its real purpose was to tell the pen buyer that this pen was as easy to load as the “other” .45 — just open it up and drop in a newcartridge.

A duo-point nib is like a standard round nib, but it is also ground and polished so that you can write with it while holding the pen with its nib on the underside instead of in the usual nib-uppermost orientation. This gives a finer line, so that you can have, in effect, two different nib grades on one pen. Parker was famous for the quality of its duo-point nibs.TARGA BY SHEAFFER

The French word ciselé means “chiseled,” and the 75 truly was chiseled (engraved): the solid sterling silver cap and barrel were manufactured smooth, incised with a crosshatched grid (U.S. Patent N o D205,872) inspired by the design of Parker’s personal 19th-century English sterling silver cigarette case, and turned black by oxidationwith sulfur.
SHEAFFER'S BALANCE
During 1941 and early 1942, Sheaffer offered a military version of the Balance (U.S. Patent N o D123,485, issued to Ray E. McKiernan and assigned to Sheaffer). This version’s clip, which made its appearance in 1940, has been described as an ordinary radius clipcleverly adapted to
SHEAFFER’S “TRIUMPH” POINT The Sixth Generation. 1966 saw the introduction of the Sheaffer Stylist, which featured a two-sided “flippable” steel nib. It did poorly, and it was replaced in 1967 by the Stylist II, which brought back the Skripsert “TRIUMPH” point, and this time the gold-colored nibs were 14K. The Stylist II had a separate nib unit. THE TOP 10 VINTAGE PENS, AS I SEE IT Sheaffer Snorkel (1952-1959): David Nishimura put it perfectly in an interview I did once with him — vintage Sheaffers are inexpensive for collectors today because they were the best pens made at the time they were current. And they still are, today. That’s why they’re so plentiful, easy to get up and running again after years of dormancy, and usually remain in good condition. HOW TO RESTORE THE EVERSHARP SKYLINE At first glance, the Eversharp Skyline seems quite ordinary. It looks like just another lever filler, so it ought to be a cinch to restore. However, some of the construction details in this pen make it rather more difficult than the basic lever filler described in How to Replace a Pen Sac. This article will lead you through the intricacies of one of the iconic pens of the 1940s. Waterman Company didn’t invent the lever-filling fountain pen; that honor goes — not to Walter Sheaffer — but to John Barnes, whose design, secured by U.S. Patent N o 726,495, became public in 1903.But Waterman’s pens were, and remain, very popular. Among the most popular, partly because of the great number of these pens still to be found in usable condition, is the famed FILLING SYSTEMS: HOW THEY WORK Design: Mechanical ink-sac compression. The sac is corrugated somewhat like a bellows and is compressed along its length by a button at the end of the barrel. To fill: Remove blind cap. Immerse nib and part of section into ink. Press and release plunger four times, waiting three seconds at the top of each stroke.
THE PARKER “21”
Parker’s own “riposte” to the success of the “51” was to find ways of producing a less costly version, and in the years following World War II several such pens came out of Janesville. The first was the Parker “21”, a mass-market model introduced in 1948 at the then-remarkable price of only $5.00. HOW TO PAMPER YOUR PENS See the illustration to the left. Fill the syringe with water, insert the cell case into the opening, and immerse the nib end of the pen into a sink partially filled with water. Squeeze. To refill the syringe, release while the nib remains immersed; this draws water backward through the pen.THE PARKER “51”
Conceived to write with Parker’s innovative super-fast-drying ink, which was also dubbed “51”, the pen was styled to accommodate its necessary innards while at the same time having a pleasing appearance. It accomplishes that marriage with exquisite success. Unlike other pens of its time, including the Vacumatics that preceded it, it isn’t marbled, mottled, striated, or pearlescent. The Stylist II had a separate nib unit.PEN GLOSSOPEDIA: G
