SUBLET - REELING REVIEWS Laura's Review: B-Israeli cowriter (with "Yossi's" Itay Segal)/director Eytan Fox ("Yossi & Jagger") has blended the fish-out-of-water and generational clash comedy templates with something like a coming-of-age narrative crossed with romantic drama and ended up with two nice character studies that get bogged down in third act contrivances. SILO - REELING REVIEWS This first feature film-on-a-small-budget, written and directed by Marshall Burnette, runs a scant 76 minutes, and while I am a huge fan of films being the shorter the better, this effort should have been longer. 2021 OSCAR NOMINATED SHORTS At Nordhausen, both the young girl and the old women break down, Colette distraught because she hadn’t thought to bring flowers. The short has the feel of something we might have seen on the History Channel years ago with narration over archival footage cut with present day observations. The film’s sentimental ending feelsmanufactured.
THE WAITING ROOM
Robin's Review: B+. This is a concise (81 minutes) documentary on a day in the life of the Highland Hospital in Oakland, California. Filmmaker Peter Nicks uses a cinema verite style as his camera follows the key figures in the ER/Outpatient care unit at Highland. AMELIE (LE FABULEUX DESTIN D'AMÉLIE POULAIN) Laura's Review: B+. Audrey Tautou, who first came to attention in "Venus Beauty Institute," is the waif-like heroine whose whimsical ways of doing good (and, in one deserving case, mischief) cause fate, along with some helping hands, to return to her a love match. While this technically wondrous and charming film is a delight, it's ideasaren't
THOSE WHO WISH ME DEAD The tale plods away to its expected finale of good triumphing over evil and leaves a trail of mayhem and a tale of survival. It is entertaining and action packed but do not expect anything new and original. Warner Brothers releases "Those Who Wish Me Dead" in theaters and on HBO Max on 5/14/21. BREAD AND TULIPS (PANE E TULIPANI) The film that came to mind for comparison to "Bread and Tulips" was the charming 1989 film, "Shirley Valentine," starring Pauline Collins in the title role. Both movies are about a middle-aged woman, under appreciated by her family, who has the chance to get away and rediscover her true self. For Rosalba, it means meeting people whoaccept her

One of my favorite animations ever is the 1961 classic, “One Hundred and One Dalmatians.” Less favorite were the live action remake and sequel starring Glenn Close as the evil puppy hunter, so I was less than thrilled to hear about the live action “origin” story told in “Cruella,” THE WOMAN IN THE WINDOW Laura's Review: C-A.J. Finn's 2018 bestseller was part of the wave of ‘problematic female witness’ novels that followed the huge success of ‘Gone Girl,’ (see ‘The Girl on the Train,’ etc.), a mini-trend that relied too heavily on outrageous plot twists that were either all too easy to see coming or completely off the map, so intent on pulling the rug out from underneath us 2021 OSCAR NOMINATED SHORTS An elderly man sits down with his grandson, a concert musician and composer making his debut at the Disney Concert Hall. HARDBALL - REELING REVIEWS It is one of the best casting of a large bunch of young actors and they, uniformly, act the part of members of a team. My favorite is the charismatic little kid playing G-baby. This is a movie, in concept, like many inspirational sports team flicks we've seen - "The Bad News Bears," "The Mighty Ducks," "Mystery, Alaska" and a myriad of othersFINAL ACCOUNT
Directed by Luke Holland (who died shortly after the film’s completion), “Final Account” is a compilation of interviews, taken over ten years, of those participants, willing and unwilling, in Hitler’s Third Reich. I had a preconceived notion, so long after the war, that the participants on the German side, soldier and civilian, must see
THE HUMAN FACTOR
Cowriter (with his editor Oron Adar)/director Dror Moreh, whose “The Gatekeepers” examined the Israeli/Palestinian conflict from the inside out via Israel’s Shin Bet intelligence service, returns to the same subject, this time focusing on the U.S. role in Middle East peace negotiations and how they succeeded or failed based on “TheHuman Factor.”
THE LIFE OF DAVID GALE A videotape showing incriminating evidence mysteriously turns up and the news sleuths keep on digging for the truth - the real truth. I found few surprises in "The Life of David Gale." The "shocking" ending, when all is finally revealed, was telegraphed very early on and I didn't fall for the twists and turns of the script by CharlesRandolph.
THE INTOUCHABLES
The screenplay, by co-directors Olivier Nakache and Eric Toledano, is rich with humor and great dialog. “Intouchables” is a true feel good flick. There are several blatantly clichéd scenes – Driss getting everyone on Philippe’s staff to spontaneously break into dance; a clothes changing montage as Driss sparks up Philippe’swardrobe

Original music by Brad Mehldau provides a cosmopolitan ambience. "My Wife Is An Actress" is aMARIA FULL OF GRACE
The film ends in an expected but nonetheless satisfying way. Catalina Sandino Moreno creates a strong young woman whose external fearlessness is cut with just the right amount of vulnerability to keep her real. Hers is a confident performance which shows a maturity unusual in a debut. Three other actresses all deserve mention, however, for

A reason for this is there are no fewer than five main narration threads, going in different, convoluted directions, presented here. And, I did not give a hoot about any of them. The overall use of close-up and two shots is intermittently augmented by lushly photographed views of the larger world around Jin and Bin. “Treeless Mountain” requires the commitment by the viewer to get involved in the lives of the little girls. But, for the real filmbuff,
THE PERFECT GAME
The film is in English, yet Frankie needs to explain to someone that the boys don't speak English, a fact which could have been established without this jarring note. Cesar's courtship of Maria (Patricia Manterola) back in Monterrey is only good for a last act gag. Of all the kids, Austin and Jansen Panettiere (brother of Hayden) as theteam's
THE WOLF OF SNOW HOLLOW This is a funny premise, but one that director/writer/star Jim Cummings fails to deliver on the promised horror comedy. Some will call Cummings’s performance a “character study,” but I think it more an indulgence of and by the filmmaker. As I watched “The Wolf of Snow Hollow,” I found that the actual hunt for the killer took aback
MY WIFE IS AN ACTRESS (MA FEMME EST UNE ACTRICE) Editor Jennifer Auge keeps things moving at a snappy pace and even shows wit in her cutting when the carry-through of a well-aimed punch turns into a speeding train. Original music by Brad Mehldau provides a cosmopolitan ambience. SUBLET - REELING REVIEWS 1 day ago · Laura's Review: B-Israeli cowriter (with "Yossi's" Itay Segal)/director Eytan Fox ("Yossi & Jagger") has blended the fish-out-of-water and generational clash comedy templates with something like a coming-of-age narrative crossed with romantic drama and ended up with two nice character studies that get bogged down in third act contrivances.BORN INTO BROTHELS
In that respect, "Born Into Brothels" is only partially successful as the children mostly have an innate talent for finding beauty amidst squalor. However, Zana's portrait of the eight children she uses as viewfinders is strikingly vivid. Avijit, Gour, Puja, Kochi, Manik, Shanti, Suchitra and Tapasi range in age from ten to fourteen andtheir
WINTER'S BONE
Techs are excellent for a small budget flick and fit the tone and mood of this fine indy film. If you enjoy good movie-making, excellent characters and a tightly wrought story then “Winter’s Bone” is the film for you. If you do not care about good story-telling and acting, waste your money and go see “The A-Team.”.

Expanding upon themes from her prior short ‘Nasty,’ cowriter (with 'Nasty's' Anthony Fletcher)/director Prano Bailey-Bond, makes a feature debut exhibiting a sure hand with establishing sometimes comical but often creepy period details and anunsettling tone.
QUEEN BEES - REELING REVIEWS When her home is partially destroyed by a fire, Helen (Ellen Burstyn) decides to make a temporary move into the Pine Grove Senior Community and is shocked to discover an experience much like high school, complete with a trio of mean girls known as the “Queen Bees.” THE CONJURING: THE DEVIL MADE ME DO IT Laura's Review: C ‘The Devil Made Me Do It’ is how the real life case, the first time demonic possession was used as a defense in a U.S. courtroom (the judge disallowed it), was known, and it must have been an intriguing trial. THOSE WHO WISH ME DEAD The tale plods away to its expected finale of good triumphing over evil and leaves a trail of mayhem and a tale of survival. It is entertaining and action packed but do not expect anything new and original. Warner Brothers releases "Those Who Wish Me Dead" in theaters and on HBO Max on 5/14/21.THE SPARKS BROTHERS
In 1971, Californian brothers Russ and Ron Maels' unusual musical output caught the attention of Todd Rundgren via Miss Christine, a girlfriend he had in common with Russ. THE HITMAN’S WIFE’S BODYGUARD After undergoing therapy after his experience guarding hitman Darius Kincaid (Samuel L. In San Salvador, during the tumultuous years of civil war during the 1980’s, both the right-wing, government-run Army and the FLMN rebel guerrillas conscripted boys as young as 12-years old to fight for their respective causes. 11-year old Chava (Carlos Padilla), though, is still just a kid, enjoying playing withhis
BLOW THE MAN DOWN
Still, “Blow the Man Down” is regional filmmaking if not quite at its finest, still plenty flavorful. The film opens auspiciously with a musical number, four old fishermen posed around piers as they sing the titular shanty. After we see Enid watching a man chase a woman up a snowy hill from the upper window of what we come to learn is herREELING REVIEWS
