Extremely full breeches adorned with sometime hundreds of yards of ribbon called Rhinegraves or petticoat breeches came into style in the 1650s and spread throughout Germany and the LowCountries.

But the real emergence of Polish dress dates to the appearance in Parliament in 1562 of King Sigismund Augustus wearing a greynobleman’s coat.
DYEING WITH REAL SAFFRON The garment was then sewn together except for the neck and bottom hem. Before placing the garment in the dyepot, I wet it with water until it was saturated. Then I put it into the dye pot and filled the pot the rest of the way and put it on the stove. When the water started to warm, I sprinkled the saffron over it ppinch by pinch. It is more likely that “saffron” was a word used to decribe the colour of the garment, not the stuff with which it was dyed.
