Special Weather Statement issued January 07 at 3:14AM EST by NWS Greenville-Spartanburg ...LIGHT SNOW AND ICE ACCUMULATIONS EXPECTED ACROSS THE HIGH ELEVATIONS OF THE SOUTHERN AND CENTRAL NORTH CAROLINA MOUNTAINS THIS MORNING... Moisture arriving from the west this morning ahead of a low pressure system and associated cold front will spread a mixture of snow, sleet, freezing, and rain across the North Carolina mountains. Temperatures will generally be warm enough to support mainly a cold rain in the valleys, but snow, sleet, and freezing rain will be possible at the onset of the precipitation through daybreak at the higher elevations, with snow showers possibly persisting along the higher peaks into the afternoon behind the departing the cold front. At elevations above about 4500 feet, snow accumulations could reach 1 to 2 inches, along with a light glaze of ice through mid-morning, especially across the high elevations around the Smokies and Balsams. Slippery spots could develop on roads in these areas this morning, and then windy conditions will pick up through the afternoon. Moisture crossing western North Carolina this morning ahead of a low pressure system and associated cold front will produce mainly a cold rain across the North Carolina foothills. However, the precipitation could start out as a mixture of snow, sleet, and freezing rain in some locations around daybreak, and spotty ice or snow accumulations will be possible through mid-morning. The precipitation will end quickly later in the morning hours, with temperatures rebounding into the 40s this afternoon. Use caution if traveling across the northern foothills of western North Carolina this morning.
