KEVIN CANNON'S USFS RETIREMENT CELEBRATION JAN. 23, 2020 KEVIN CANNON’S CELEBRATORY ROAST Thursday, January 23, 2020, 6-8:30 p.m., The Drake Center On Thursday, January 23rd, 2020, 160 USFS personnel, PWV members, friends and family gathered at the Drake Center in Fort Collins to celebrate, honor and roast Kevin Cannon on his retirement after 18 years with the USFS Canyon Lakes Ranger District (CLRD). During these 18 years, Kevin also served as liaison to the Poudre WildernessVolunteers (PWV).
After many yummy appetizers brought by guests and a dinner of pulled pork, baked beans, salad and rolls, the USFS guests provided a wonderful and well-decorated cake in Kevin’s honor. During the roast, Kevin received some great and fun gifts including a beautiful framed picture (USFS) and a book of pictures spanning Kevin’s career(PWV).
Ten people ‘roasted’ Kevin with some funny stories and a LOT of glowing endearments. Although unable to attend, long-time friend of Kevin, Michael Rowan, sent some very humorous stories that were shared. Volunteers from the audience also ‘roasted’ Kevin. Ralph Swain, Regional Wilderness and Rivers Program Manager, mentioned that Kevin was most unique in receiving not one but two national awards during his service, the Bob Marshall Award For Individual Champion of Wilderness Stewardship in 2004 and the Outstanding River Manager in2019.
PWV’s Photo/Video committee created a couple of great videos about Kevin and his time in this area. * Click link to view Kevin’s PWV Farewell Address * Click link to view Kevin's Interview With Celia PWV is thankful to have Kristy Wumkes as our new liaison. She mentioned that she has big shoes to fill. PWV will miss Kevin; best wishes and Happy Trails! PWV'S NEW CHAIR LOOKING AHEAD TO 2020 ELAINE GREEN PWV CHAIR 2019-2020 I moved to Colorado in 2006 and like many of you, never tire of looking to the west with affection and appreciation for the mountains, forest, and wilderness we have in our backyard. I am happy to assume the role of Chair of the 2019-2020 PWV Board of Directors, but I am also humbled to be part of an organization with so many volunteers who step up to play a vital role in meeting our mission to help the Canyon Lakes Ranger District protect and share the mountain and grassland resource we are lucky enough to have readily available to us. The hours our members contributed last year had a value to the Forest Service of $635,369 and we saw over 17,000 visitors and educated many about protecting the resource we enjoy. The number of dogs off leash seen last year was at an all time low, so perhaps that message isgetting through!
2020 will bring some changes and challenges to PWV. Kevin Cannon is retiring, but with a nod to our “separation anxiety” he will serve on our Advisory Board. His duties as the liaison will be, at this point, filled by a team of Forest Service staff. As you may know, the new Young’s Gulch trail is now open. It’s impossible to adequately show my appreciation to Mike Corbin, Kevin Cannon, and so many others who made this possible. I hope that our members will seek new committees to join this year and know they are welcome to attend a Board of Directors meeting, as listed on our calendar. Next October we will be seeking new members for the Board, and attending a meeting is a great way to see if that is a service you’d be willing to perform. I wish you the best as you “hike and ride with a purpose” this year, and invite you to contact me with concerns, comments, or suggestions that you have.Elaine Green
Chair, PWV Board of Directors, 2019-2020 PWV'S MOST RECENT PAST CHAIR LOOKING BACK AT 2019 TOM ADAMS PWV CHAIR 2018 - 2019 Our 2019 season saw significant changes and exciting new programs and events. We graduated forty-three new members into PWV at our new Spring Training facility, the Buckhorn Camp. For those of us who are getting a bit older and/or softer, the camp provides two lodges, cabins, dorms and indoor restrooms with showers. We almost finished work on the Young Gulch trail which was seriously damaged by the flood in 2013. Hopefully the trail will be once again open to the public by the end of this year. Among other accomplishments, a new stock committee was created, the weed management program was renewed, with the “Weed Wednesdays” initiative being implemented. The Kids in Nature program was expanded to include twenty hikes, more than ever before, and some in-classroom sessions. Several PWV policies were updated. We also took a leadership role in co-sponsoring the first Central Rockies Wilderness Volunteer Workshop, which had 90 participants from 8 states. Many thanks to the PWV members who were instrumental in making the workshop a huge success. New requirements for member recertification were implemented, requiring recertification every 7 years, rather than every 5. Kick Off Night was reorganized and Kick Off Morning was implemented, enabling recertification to be completed in just one day. Our members were kept engaged with Affiliation gatherings, summer social events, a holiday party, and a Gear Fest and Gear Give-Away. Our menu of supplemental training opportunities was also expanded. Many of our committees did an outstanding job, some coming up with new and exciting events, and in several cases, recruiting energetic newmembers.
