ABOUT US | PUSHBLACK NOW In a world of 24/7 breaking news and neverending social media news feeds, it is easy to get caught in the moment - forgetting that many of society’s “new” challenges have actually been successfully overcome in the past. However, today’s current events do not exist in a vacuum. So PushBlack was created as a unique space to focus on the intersection of news and history. EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT PUSHBLACK PushBlack believes in the power of Black history. It’s only when we study and understand the past that we can push forward for a better future for all Black people. As the United States’ first mobile-based organizing group for Black Americans, we keep our people informed about key issues, and then lead them to take action. Marcus Garvey said, “A people with no knowledge of their history WHAT ARE THE EFFECTS OF CULTURAL APPROPRIATION? Overall, when people of a dominant group take cultural elements from a group they have historically oppressed – especially without credit – this strengthens uneven power structures. It reinforces the idea that white people can take everything they can get their hands on, and Black boundaries are not to be respected. BLACK HISTORY IS IMPORTANT Black History Is Important - Why Isn't It Being Taught? Back in 1933, Dr. Carter G. Woodson’s renowned book “The Mis-Education of the Negro” was published. With insights about how public schools do NOT teach Black children, but instead condition them to accept being second-rate citizens, his book remains as relevant today as it wasthen.

THIS QUEEN WOULDN'T ALLOW HER PEOPLE TO BE ENSLAVED This Queen Wouldn't Allow Her People To Be Enslaved. Dandara ruled a free Black community in Brazil alongside her husband in the 1600s. Her community was prosperous, free, and thriving. But this incredible leader faced one huge challenge to her power. Black Christians express their faith in and worship God in a number of deeply-held traditions. From the outside looking in, it’s easy to misunderstand the place of tradition within the contemporary struggle for liberation. And yet, there is value to be found. When you see the percentages of local and state spending you'll be shocked. RESEARCH ON BLACK HEALTH IGNORED FOR CENTURIES In the early 1900s our people had very little access to healthcare. While many white scholars and doctors blamed it on us – saying that because we were Black, we were naturally less healthy – one scholar brought a different viewpoint. W.E.B. DuBois’ work uncovered the truth 100+ years ago, so why does the U.S. still refuse to listen? HE'S USING THIS POLICE EXPERIENCE FOR HIS NEW ART At 2am on May 17, 2021, John Sims was sleeping in his apartment at the 701 Center for Contemporary Art in Columbia, South Carolina. Next thing he knew, police burst in with their guns drawn and detained him! Columbia’s police chief says they acted “professionally and withinpolicy.” Really?
THIS "WELL-KNOWN RACIST" JUDGE TRIED RUNNING PROTESTERS In May 2021, 23-year-old activist Myah Warren reported that she and other protesters were almost hit by a car in Fayetteville, North Carolina. After her request to press charges was denied twice, the assailant was finally charged with assault with a deadly weapon. Who’s the suspect? A JUDGE. THE BUSINESS SIDE OF THE PRISON INDUSTRY EXPLAINED Fact #3: Prison Itself Is A Reform. Prisons have always targeted us, but some saw them as better than historic forms of lynching and execution. Prisons have evolved over time; the era of mass incarceration began in the ’70s. A TEEN'S DROWNING CAUSED AN ENTIRE CITY TO RIOT Eugene Williams was only trying to cool off from the oppressive July heat. It was 1919 and the Chicago summer was no joke. Though the waters of Lake Michigan were segregated, it was still peaceful. But the tranquility was short-lived. THIS COMMUNITY'S GUN VIOLENCE PREVENTION PLAN RIVALS THEIR 6-year-old Aniya Allen was recently shot and killed in Minneapolis, Minnesota – the third child to be shot in three weeks, and the 20th this year. Mayor Jacob Frey laid out a “new” safety plan to prevent gun violence but it’s looking pretty stale. THIS PRISON TORTURE USED TO BE AN "EXPERIMENT" ON REALITY There have been many approaches to reality TV, but the 2006 show “Solitary” somehow slipped under the radar of national conversation. Some called it “torture.” The creators called it “an intense psychological experiment.” But, for incarcerated people? It’s not just TV – it’s actual reality. HE WORE "WHITE-FACE" TO AVOID GETTING ARRESTED BY THE 30-year old Rockim Prowell was recently arrested in Los Angeles after pulling off at least 30 home burglaries. In each case, he was wearing a white prosthetic face mask, a light brown wig, and glasses. In other words, he was in “white-face!” So he couldn’t have imagined how he’d finally get caught. WHEN FILMING A FIGHT BECAME FILMING A MURDER More than 60 teens watched a fight between Khaseen Morris and a group of other students. Morris was stabbed and eventually died - turning the video on the teens’ phones, and posted to Snapchat, into evidence of a murder. “I would hope... students would break up fights, not just stand there and video,” said Tim Winter, a school district Superintendent. But it’s not that simple. googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display("div-gpt-ad-1512094833018-0"); }); Some school administrators, and lawmakers, want filming fights to be illegal - but that would be unconstitutional. Advocates say schools that discipline students for filming fights, including calling the police, are feeding teens into the school-to-prison pipeline. They also argue that our culture glamorizes violence and fighting - MMA fights draw huge crowds and millions of dollars, for example, and websites like World Star Hip Hop and apps like Snapchat get millions of views posting fights. Why wouldn’t teens pick up on this? There are more risks to filming fights, though - teens CAN get arrested for posting fight videos. Bystanders can also be in danger - a teen in North Carolina was SHOT while filming a fight. There isn’t a simple answer to this issue, since fighting among young people remains common, and smartphones make filming easier than ever. All we can hope is that parents talk to their children about the issue, its risks, and that another tragedy like Khaseen Morris’ doesn’t happen again. BEING IN JAIL IS HELL. BEING RELEASED CAN BE, TOO Jessica St. Louis was released at 1:30am from Santa Rita jail without money or a phone. It’s two miles from the nearest public transit station, which doesn’t start operating until 5am anyway. Four hours later, she was found dead. googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display("div-gpt-ad-1512094833018-0"); }); She’s not alone. Hundreds of women are released late at night from prisons and jails daily. Part of this is because of how they’re funded. The number of filled beds determines funding, so at midnight, incarcerated people are counted, the funding secured - and then they’re pushed out into the night, often without a safe way to contact anyone or get home safely. Women report being forced to trade sex with strangers for a ride home, because they’re released with no money. Others report being preyed on by drug dealers outside of jails, because they know how traumatized and desperate for relief many women are upon being released. “It’s hard to think of a more counterproductive, self-defeating measure if we want people to succeed when they get out of jail than releasing them in the middle of the night,” says David Fathi, director of the American Civil Liberties Union’s prison project. Activists are pressuring lawmakers to change how jails are funded and ban late-night releases. Some progress is being made, but if we want Black women to be safe in and outside of jails, and safe after release, MUCH more work is needed. IS YOUR LOCAL JAIL STEALING FROM INMATES? A corrections officer in Charlotte, MI got charged for stealing an inmate’s property during booking. It also recently happened in Liberty, TX and Homewood, AL - and in countless jails across the country. What’s going on? googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display("div-gpt-ad-1512094833018-0"); }); Anyone booked into a jail in the United States has to surrender all of their belongings. They’re supposed to get everything back when they make bail or are released - but it doesn’t always happen. Not only do many have their belongings “lost” or stolen, but a recent exposé in Philadelphia also showed a similar way jails abuse inmates. Almost 75% of inmates in Philadelphia were released in the middle of the night, after the “cashier’s office” was closed. Without cash, ID, or a phone, they had to fend for themselves - miles away from home, after buses had stopped running! Getting back on your feet after being incarcerated is difficult enough - trying to do so without any of your belongings makes it almost impossible! After the exposé was published, though, and activism from the community, the Philadelphia Department of Prisons changed its laws to adjust this unfair system. Jails should support people who are released so they can integrate back into their lives and avoid going back. Philadelphia shows that jail system reform won’t happen, though, unless we keep up the activism and media pressure! WHY DID TRUMP CARE SO MUCH ABOUT THIS QUESTION? “Are you a U.S. citizen?” It seems like a simple enough question, but that’s not what the Trump Administration had in mind when they wanted to add it to the census. There’s a reason that this question led to fights in the courts, and you need to understand why. The Trump Administration knew that adding such a question could skew the numbers because it might scare away people who are non-citizens or undocumented from wanting to take part. The question became an issue of jeopardizing the accuracy of the count. googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display("div-gpt-ad-1512094833018-0"); }); Vox reported that Democrats opposed to Trump’s move pointed out that “skewing the population counts used to draw Congressional districts” would be “eventually giving Republicans a bigger electoral advantage.” This shows why it’s important that we as Black people participate. Trump’s attempt to add the question failed, but it’s important for us to see why it was happening in the first place. The Trump Administration wanted to get citizenship information because ultimately it affects redistricting and elections. This is a big deal for Black people. Whether you’re a Black immigrant or refugee or not, it’s important to see the plot that was at hand. Discouraging our participation in the census is an old trick, and we shouldn’tfall for it!
THEY WANT TO SCARE YOU AWAY FROM THE CENSUS FOR A REASON Dirty tactics are being used against people with criminal records to make them feel some type of way about the census. As usual, there’s an agenda at play here when it comes to the Black community and our rights. Don’t let tricks like this one catch you slipping. googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display("div-gpt-ad-1512094833018-0"); }); There are efforts coming from the right-wing to put a question about criminal background on the census. Why? Well, for one, we know such a question would disproportionately affect Black people, since we’re disproportionately incarcerated. It’s fair to suspect that asking such a question might be a way to scare people out of taking the census. But the census needs to have an accurate count that reflects who and where we are. See, population counts from the census have everything to do with resources. Electoral votes, federal funds, congressional seats and more are decided by the numbers. That’s why OUR PARTICIPATION MATTERS - and it’s why others might want to manipulate the count and scare us away. The fact of the matter is, we’re a people that others feel threatened by. That’s why our adversaries are always trying to come up with creative ways to stop us from getting what we’re supposed to. Their tricks actually expose just how powerful we are since it takes that much effort! SOMETIMES LEAVING PRISON IS AS WORRISOME AS GOING IS When it’s time to leave prison you might be in the middle of nowhere. Say you’re released from some facility far from where you’re from. You’re going to need a ride, somewhere to go, food, and more. Some prisons give those they release a little money, but here’s what’s wrong. The “gate money,” money for those leaving prison, isn’t enough to do much of anything. According to the Marshall project: “At the highest end, California and Colorado provide $200 and $100, respectively. At the lowest end, people in Alabama and Louisiana often leave prison with as little as $10 or $20 in their pockets.” googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display("div-gpt-ad-1512094833018-0"); }); Some people leave prison with NOTHING. That’s why the first few days when someone leaves prison are said to determine whether or not someone will have to go back. Being in desperate need can lead to crime, so releasing someone with nothing doesn’t help stop it! And get this, a lot of these states don’t change the amount of money they give to prisoners getting out with the times. So inflation occurs and they don’t increase how much prisoners get. You can’t do much of anything when you barely have enough for a meal or anywhere to stay. Not everyone has family and friends to depend on and prisoners are shunned by society. Part of the reason this country is backwards when it comes to criminal justice is because it doesn’t fix problems with common-sense solutions. Prisoners need resources, not the conditions that helped lock them up. EVERY STATE NEEDS TO DO THIS TO PRIVATE PRISONS California passed a bill that BANS for-profit prison facilities, and it’s great news. Private prisons mix money with the prison system in more ways than one and add an incentive for people to see us locked up! Now, what’s happening in California should inspire us all. California was huge for private prisons, with “more than 2,200 people… held in such facilities as of June” as reported by Vice. The bill was introduced by Assemblyman Rob Bonta, who said “it was a stand against companies that ‘only care about the almighty dollar.’” We need more like it! googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display("div-gpt-ad-1512094833018-0"); }); Private prison companies like the Geo Group and CoreCivic have played an important role in trying to influence laws that target Black people. They do this so they can lock more of us up since they make money off of housing inmates at states’ expense. It’s really messed up! California was a big market for private prison companies, but now this is messing things up for them in the best way possible. We can only hope that more states follow this example and that these companies go OUT OF BUSINESS. The more of these places closing their doors the better. California took a great step to show other states how it’s done, BUT there’s still a long way to go. Private companies are interwoven into the public prison system too. Prisons shouldn’t be a money-making scheme for anyone!* More Stories
