In Imtiaz Ali’s previous edition of the same title, parallels were drawn between how couples negotiated relationships, aaj and kal. One is sold on the concept of soulmates, the other hopes for a congress of convenience. One is capricious about priorities, while the other seems so single-minded, he must have blinders on. But they both process that wrenching feeling that accompanies every romance and eventually settle on the only antidote known to ease the burn. In this retelling, one hoped that Ali would channel his ‘Rumi for the rummaging soul’ style in delving into how couples today calculate their cardiac calling. But was this update necessary? Especially since the story is essentially the same and so is what transpires between a man and a woman when they take to each other. And can depicting a generation that loves to have their cake and Gram it too be compelling enough for audiences to survive the 2 hours and 21 minutes that this film consumes? Let’s just say, the last 21 would be an ordeal for sure. This film opens to millennials Veer (Kartik Aaryan) and Zoe (Sara Ali Khan). He’s a techie (furnished with ruffled hair, geeky glasses and a suspicious look which could have him confused for a serial killer). She’s an entrepreneur with massive aspirations that she can’t stop talking about. When they attempt to get between the sheets, he feels it’s an “underutilisation” of their time, but she reads it as a rejection of sorts and much chest-beating follows. Enter Raj (Randeep Hooda), filling in for Rishi Kapoor’s Veer Singh from the 2009 film, as the worldly gent who volunteers his love story hoping to revive that twinkle in Zoe’s eyes. But when his flashback only details his numerous sexual exploits, all hope seems lost. Will our gullible 20-somethings manage to navigate their feelings without a suggestive fairy tale that evidently has more influence over them than their own rational judgement? Will Zoe be compelled to fold up her career to keep up with a relationship that’s hardly demanding? Will Veer acquire a deeper understanding of the world and those that inhabit it once he acquires a bestubbled homeless look? Some of these are best

left unanswered.

Aaryan is intuitive in conveying the 90s lover, sufficiently hesitant while addressing his crush, but his interpretation of Veer, who’s also just as tentative, borders on someone with a personality disorder. In fact, in several scenes, he comes across as someone grappling with a lot more than the character seems to endure. The usually confident Khan cracks under the pressure of delivering her emotionally-scattered Zoe. Despite her compelling screen presence, she’s pushed to the limit by the unnecessarily bizarre turns injected into this story. Hooda completes his Raj with the restraint of a veteran and the enthusiasm of a newcomer, while debutante Arushi Sharma, who features only in Raj’s flashback, is promising. If only her character was fleshed out a bit more, this could’ve been an ideal launch vehicle. Ali, who last helmed Jab Harry Met Sejal, delivers a melodramatic mess that drains the audience. Adapting a story that’s already been told well can be challenging. But he struggles even more in translating current relationships and how young adults approach every ache and break. In fact, in several scenes, we find the lead pair heaped over each other mumbling dialogue that seems so unnecessarily whimsical and dull that one can barely keep up. Characters in Ali’s films have often left little to the imagination, vomiting every thought or concern that pops into their heads and yet, struggling to put a finger on their feelings. Here, they do the same in words that resemble WhatsApp forwards from that annoying uncle in the family group. This film has an obsessive-yet-obedient hero and a heroine who’s constantly overreacting and intermittently overacting. And while copious amounts of alcohol are downed by some in this film, the unsuspecting audience will be the one to emerge with a throbbing

hangover.
