ANNOUNCEMENTS
USDA FAILED TO CONSULT TRIBES OR CONSIDER IMPACT ON CIVIL RIGHTS IN PROPOSAL TO WEAKEN SCHOOL MEAL PROGRAM STANDARDS In formal comments filed April 22 on the USDA’s Food and Nutrition Service’s proposed rule to weaken nutrition standards for school food, the Public Health Law Center urged the agency to maintain current standards, to conduct a proper Civil Rights Impact Analysis, to consult with Tribal Nations about the impacts of the proposed rule, and to help schools accommodate student’s religious and cultural dietary requirements. The Center insisted that the proposed changes would harm children, especially those at risk of hunger, and would disproportionately impact children of color and American Indian and Alaska Native children.
