Summer Camps Summer Camp Schedule 2021. At the Port Townsend Marine Science Center (PTMSC), our summer camps allow burgeoning young scientists and adventurers to spend a week exploring beaches, uncovering treasures hidden in our exhibits, playing games, making crafts, and hiking through beautiful Fort Worden State Park. AQUARIUM, MUSEUM & GIFT SHOP The Port Townsend Marine Science Center is located in Fort Worden State Park, in the city of Port Townsend, Washington. We are less than a mile from Point Wilson, which marks the the northeast corner of Washington's Olympic Peninsula, where Puget Sound meets the Strait of Juan De Fuca. THE ORCA PROJECT. The Orca Project: In 2002, the body of a female killer whale was found stranded on the North Olympic Peninsula in Washington State. Just offshore, a healthy, young male hovered close by, refusing gentle attempts to guide him into safer deep water. Although the male orca was saved, it was soon learned that thefemale's body
MARINE MAMMAL STRANDING NETWORK & NECROPSY PROGRAM As a regional stranding network, PTMSC staff and volunteers respond to stranding reports, keep shoreline users at a safe distance, and collect data from dead animals. PTMSC covers the shoreline from Brinnon to Diamond Point, WA. The Northwest Marine Mammal Stranding Network program was formalized by 1992 Amendments to the Marine Mammal THE PROTECTION ISLAND STORY Two women, Zella Schultz and Eleanor Stopps, are responsible for the exciting and inspiring climax to the story of the island's protected status. Zella was an artist and wildlife biologist who had studied its colony of glaucous-winged gulls, making detailed observations of their daily life. Eleanor joined Zella on the bird-banding expeditions MONITORING OF SEA STAR WASTING DISEASE Monitoring of Sea Star Wasting Disease. PTMSC volunteers track the condition of selected sea stars in our exhibit tanks. Volunteer monitor a tidal plot at Indian Island. One volunteer monitors a sub-tidal plot at Indian Island. All data is owned and managed by PTMSC. We share the data with the MARINe program from University ofCalifornia, Santa

Killer whales, (Orcinus orca) commonly called orcas, are found in all the world’s oceans, but the best known and most studied populations are those of the Pacific Northwest. All orcas are PORT TOWNSEND MARINE SCIENCE CENTER The area that we know as Port Townsend is the ancestral territory of the S’Klallam People, the Strong People. The name of the S’Klallam village at Port Townsend was called qatáy (kuh-tai). We acknowledge and respect the land and surrounding waters that once belonged to theS’Klallam People.

RESPONDING TO MARINE MAMMAL STRANDINGS The PTMSC Marine Mammal Stranding Network receives reports from the area from Brinnon to Diamond Pt. WA. View a map of stranding network regions in Washington State. The graph below shows a record of total reports received from 2008 to 2014. As this graph indicates, harbor seals, shown in red, are the most commonly reported animal in ourarea.
CONTAMINANTS IN ORCAS Contaminants in Orcas Killer Whales and Marine Pollutants. When scientists analyzed tissue samples from the body of CA189, the orca that stranded near Dungeness Spit in 2002, they were stunned by the level of contaminants she carried. Summer Camps Summer Camp Schedule 2021. At the Port Townsend Marine Science Center (PTMSC), our summer camps allow burgeoning young scientists and adventurers to spend a week exploring beaches, uncovering treasures hidden in our exhibits, playing games, making crafts, and hiking through beautiful Fort Worden State Park. AQUARIUM, MUSEUM & GIFT SHOP The Port Townsend Marine Science Center is located in Fort Worden State Park, in the city of Port Townsend, Washington. We are less than a mile from Point Wilson, which marks the the northeast corner of Washington's Olympic Peninsula, where Puget Sound meets the Strait of Juan De Fuca. Fort Worden State Park has over two miles of saltwater MARINE MAMMAL STRANDING NETWORK & NECROPSY PROGRAM As a regional stranding network, PTMSC staff and volunteers respond to stranding reports, keep shoreline users at a safe distance, and collect data from dead animals. PTMSC covers the shoreline from Brinnon to Diamond Point, WA.
