ANTIPSYCHOTIC COMBINATION STRATEGIES IN BIPOLAR DISORDER Optimal management of bipolar disorder (BD) includes the careful selection and regular ingestion of appropriate medication to stabilize mood. Unfortunately, between 40% and 50% of patients with BD in routine clinical settings take breaks or forget to take their medication or even discontinue the drug altogether.1-3 Treatment nonadherence is associated with mood relapse, hospitalization, and PSYCHIATRIC ISSUES FOR PATIENTS WITH RENAL DISEASE There are no formal guidelines for the treatment of psychiatric disorders in patients with renal failure, so the following points are based on clinical experience. • ESRD is defined as a GFR of less than 15 mL/min/1.73 m 2, in most cases accompanied by signs andsymptoms of uremia.
TREATING CATATONIA IN AUTISM In May 2007, the novelist Ann Bauer went public with the tribulations of her autistic son. When catatonia developed, a diagnosis of schizophrenia was made, and antipsychotic medications were prescribed, but with little benefit. When the catatonia syndrome was recognized as independent of schizophrenia and successfully treated, her son returned to a more normal life.1,2 CAN LOW-DOSE NALTREXONE HELP PATIENTS WITH DEPRESSION? I have heard from my colleagues that one such popular clinical inquiry is the use of low-dose naltrexone (LDN), as based on the plausible hypothesis that depression is associated with central nervous system (CNS) inflammation 1 while LDN can decrease inflammatory responses.2,3.
HOSPITAL-LEVEL PSYCHIATRIC EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT MODELS Hospital-Level Psychiatric Emergency Department Models. As hospital-based psychiatric emergency programs around the country demonstrate the ability to minimize ED boarding, provide cost-savings, and improve patient outcomes and clinician satisfaction, the challenge will be how to keep these models of psychiatric care self-supporting.
