DESIGNING WITH CONCRETE: A GUIDE TO FINISHING AND COLORING First, a definition. Put simply, concrete is a mixture of cement, water, fine aggregates (like sand) and coarse aggregates (like gravel). SRG PARTNERSHIP PORTLAND STUDIO The design for SRG Partnership’s Portland office effortlessly connects people to each other, the firm’s work, and their creative resources by encouraging spontaneous interactions and accessible views of each other’s current, in-the-moment projects. FEATURED ARTICLES ON PRISM HEALTHY AIRPORTS: WHAT TERMINALS WILL LOOK LIKE POST-PANDEMIC by Alvaro Fernandez de Mesa| May 19, 2020
“The aviation industry has certainly felt the hit of COVID-19– turning the green numbers into red in a matter of weeks or even days. With that said, this pandemic also reminds us of moments in history like 9/11, SARS, or financial recessions, when aviation took a hard hit, but returned from crisis and recovered strong. So, what’s next? Travelers will be looking to the airlines to restore normalcy and regain their trust as safe places to be and use. Now is the right time to ask ourselves– because we are all in this together– how we can help the industry come back stronger,” states author Alvaro Fernandez de Mesa, an associate based in Stantec’s Vancouver office.Read More
HOW TO SAFELY RE-OPEN MAIN STREET POST-COVID QUARANTINE by Alan Pullman, AIA, Founding Principal, Studio One Eleven and Shannon Heffernan, AICP, Urban Design Director/Senior Associate, Studio One Eleven | May 15,2020
Alan Pullman, AIA, Founding Principal, Studio One Eleven and Shannon Heffernan, AICP, Urban Design Director/Senior Associate, Studio One Eleven, discuss safely reopening and attracting people to Main Street, “Bringing people back downtown and to shopping streets will require confidence that the health crisis is abating, and a future outbreak will be minimized. States are now starting to re-open retail, and California Governor Gavin Newsom announced this week that California is moving to Phase Two of the State’s re-opening strategy, which includes some retail stores, with restrictions. A vaccine is perhaps many months (or even years) away, and widespread testing infeasible in the near future. Cities and communities will need to adjust public space to allow customers back in with distancing in mind. Restaurants present an opportunity that already has many indicators of success: repurpose sidewalks, street-side parking, and parking lots into outdoor dining areas.”Read More
REBIRTH WITHOUT THE REBUILD: THE CASE FOR RESTORING AND REPOSITIONING VINTAGE RESORT HOTELS by Rebecca Stone, AIA, LEED AP BD+C| Apr 14, 2020
“From an architect’s perspective, there is a way to preserve and honor the tradition and historical character of a resort hotel, and the connections people have with that place. Rather than scraping and starting anew, the owners of some of the country’s most celebrated vintage resort hotels are choosing to renovate and reposition those properties to protect the valuable associations they have with people, families and the communities in which they operate,” explains author Rebecca Stone, AIA, LEED AP BD+C, partner at OZ Architecture.Read More

HISTORIC PRESERVATION SARASOTA MUSEUM OF ARTMay 5, 2020
Partnering with the Ringling College of Art and Design, Sarasota community members had the goal of enhancing the area’s rich cultural landscape by transforming the historic high school building into the region’s first museum dedicated to contemporary art – the Sarasota Museum of Art. The existing windows had all exceeded their life span, and many of them had broken lites, air and water leaks, and they were extremely weak in terms of impact resistance. Lawson Group Architects, Inc. developed a plan to replace these windows, improve the structural integrity of the areas around the windows, and make them weather-proof – all while maintaining the historic design of the building’sfacade.

THE BOTTLING DEPARTMENT FOOD HALL IN SAN ANTONIO, TEXASApr 20, 2020
Originally constructed in 1894, a devastating fire claimed the historic Pearl Bottling House in 2003. Pearl salvaged as much from the rubble as possible, and hired Clayton & Little to rebuild the 13,132-square-foot structure as a modern interpretation of a lost Classical Revival jewel that would serve as a venue for emerging chefs and culinary talent. Pulling architectural cues from historic photos and drawings of the original building, decorative brick corbeling and stone arches reference the enchanting architecture of the 1890’s. A modified version of original wood truss design accommodates a cupola, spilling light into the hall below while acting as a nightly beacon that illuminates the surrounding complex.Read More
