WHAT THEY'RE SAYING
Sheryl has the rare talent of being both an inspiring visionary and detailed implementer. She can take a high-level idea and turn it into a well-oiled machine without losing sight of the goals. This made Sheryl an an indispensable partner to the U.S. Department of Education in launching initiatives such as Connected Educator Month and Future Ready Leaders. Her collaborative leadership style and deep educational knowledge allows her to find solutions to the most complex educationalchallenges.
RICHARD CULATTA
Former Director, Office of EdTech, US Department of Education When our district began refining its instructional vision in 2012, we turned to Powerful Learning Practices and Sheryl Nussbaum-Beach as a necessary first step to help lead and facilitate the planning and goal-setting, and to work with us as we designed and implemented Professional Learning Collaboratives (PD training) that were needed to connect our teachers and administrators across the curriculum andgrade levels.
Here we are in 2016 and four years into the process and the support we have been given is the best in the business. They have provided leadership training, both online and face-to-face, and designed professional development specifically to transition WOISD to a ‘this century’ learning environment.MITZI NEELY
Asst. Superintendent, White Oak ISD I’ve had the pleasure to work closely with Sheryl over the last four years on Connected Educator Month and the Future Ready Leaders initiative. Sheryl has an unparalleled ability to keep track of both the big picture and the practical details. She is a creative, systems thinker with a compelling vision of where education ought to be going, but she is simultaneously attuned to the realities of politics and resources and able to navigate both in ways that yield tangible results while remaining aligned to that transformative vision. One of the hardest working people I’ve ever met, she is a true collaborator who brings out the best in others and comes through for the team even under the toughest conditions. Her contributions have been indispensable to the success of the most impactful projects I have ledin recent years.

In my role as tech advocate, I habitually find myself trying to coax established educators to use new tools and incorporate new methodologies. Here are some ways I have found to be successful inthis endeavor.
SCAFFOLDING QUADRATICS: 2 THINGS MY 8TH GRADERS TAUGHT ME WITH STUDENTFEEDBACK
May 20, 2019
We’re studying quadratics in my 8th grade class. Even the name can strike fear in the heart of the most competent adult. I didn’t want it to be that way for my math kids. I wrote a good lesson plan and then I let students help me modify it. Essentially, they “taught” me how to teach them better through the interaction and feedback we gave to each other during the learning process. We built the scaffoldtogether.
START WITH WHY: THE POWER OF STUDENT-DRIVEN LEARNINGMay 8, 2019
Why do we have so many students who are frustrated and bored, just waiting to be challenged? We’ve made education about manipulation and hoops instead of inspiring our students to pursue learning that matters to them — learning that can help them make a difference in our communities and the world. By beginning with the Why questions, says teacher Shelley Wright, we can create powerful student-driven learning environments.WHAT THEY'RE SAYING
PLP has completely changed the way that I think about teaching me. Through the PLP network, I feel that I have grown as a teacher and the support has helped me to change my practices in the classroom in a way that enhances the learning of my students to be prepared for the world which they will enter.DANA LIVNE
5th Grade Teacher in Maryland PLP has been an incredible growth experience for me. Here, I find people to bounce ideas off, to challenge the way I think, to push me to do more, go further, think deeper, try again and again and yes, again, to figure out the best way to help my colleagues and students and me make the shift to 21st century learning. I am not the same learner I was before I began this journey, and I know I have muchfarther to go.
