It was pretty easy to miss, so we thought we would compile a list of some of the biggest success stories from 2020, both to lift our spirits and to give us a bit of hope for environmental action to come. 1. PLASTIC POLLUTION FACTS Plastic is a valuable resource in many ways, but plastic pollution is an unnecessary and unsustainable waste of that resource. Packaging is the largest end-use market segment accounting for just over 40% of total plastic usage. Annually, approximately 500 billion plastic bags are used worldwide. More than one million bags are used every minute. WORLD OCEAN DAY 2021: A DAY TO BE HAPPY World Ocean Day is an annual day to feel happiness by reconnecting with the ocean and all that it provides us. PLASTIC POLLUTION RESEARCH PAPERS Plastic Oceans International is a 501(c)(3), non-profit organization, founded and existing under the laws of California (Federal Tax ID#81-3778043).
10 PRODUCTS THAT SURPRISINGLY CONTAIN PLASTICS 6) Glitter. Glitter can be found in many products: they are used in arts and crafts, in cosmetics, on Christmas cards and on clothing. Glitter is made out of sheets of plastic – etched aluminum with polyethylene terephthalate (PET) to be precise. Glitters are small pieces of under 5 mm, classifying them as microplastics. BLUECOMMUNITIES: MAHONE BAY, CANADA Mahone Bay, Canada, is part of the BlueCommunities program of Plastic Oceans International, where they are partnered with Coastal Action.RETHINK.REFILL
The amount of water needed to make a plastic bottle is 6 to 7 times its content. This means, when we drink 1 litre of bottled water, we are actually consuming more than 7 litres of it. SEA TURTLES RETURNING HOME A new study by J. Roger Brothers and K. Lohmann suggests that sea turtles learn their home beach’s distinctive magnetic signature upon birth through geomagnetic imprinting. They are capable of detecting the inclination angle of the magnetic field lines that intersect the Earth’s surface, which varies predictably with latitude, as well as SYDNEY HARBOUR: ABOVE AND BELOW Sydney Harbour: Above and Below. Australia • 2019 • 5 MINS In partnership with Plastic Oceans International, TOMRA presents this short film about Australia’s iconic Sydney Harbour, which is a beautiful location, but beneath the surface, it’s a different story! 70% of all debris sinks to the ocean floor and 2/3 of pollution into Sydney Harbour comes from stormwater run-off. RECYCLING IN COLOMBIA Colombia by now is a million dollar industry that works with about 60,000 waste pickers all over the country and generates more formal (and informal) employment every day. They fully depend on this industry to make a living. These waste pickers are key in the current recycling economy, and for the transformation towards a circulareconomy.
