Raton, New Mexico has been my home for almost 20 years. I like it for the generally mild climate and authentic Western atmosphere. You won't find a bunch of tourist trap shops, the town hasn't "re-invented" itself with phony kitsch, and the area hasn't been affected by modern developments or urban sprawl. RED RIVER MINING DISTRICT Red River Mining District – ghosttowns.placesandpics.com. Mining in Red River, New Mexico began in the 1870s and a post office was established in 1895. In 1905 the mining slowed, and in 1931 serious mining efforts finally ended. By then tourism had replaced mining as the local economic base. It is unknown, but doubtful, if any authenticMT. KEYSTONE DISTRICT NM Keystone District NM – ghosttowns.placesandpics.com. Dating from the late 1800s through the early 1900s, the discovery and recovery of gold in the Keystone Mining District was a minor blip during a time of world-famous gold rushes and other regional developments. The remnants of the Keystone Mining District are cabin ruins, open pits, and LABELLE NM – GHOSTTOWNS.PLACESANDPICS.COM LaBelle Lodge sits on the same site as the historic town of LaBelle. The land-leveling for the lodge construction and the earth-moving for the pond likely destroyed a MONTAUK AIR FORCE STATION The Air Force station was decommissioned in 1981, and in 2002 the property was opened to the public as a New York State Park. The park offers hiking trails, interpretive signs, access to the rocky beach, and picnic day-use facilities. The area features a couple of small valleys, waterfalls, short bluffs, and deep forest. The hiking trail is approximately one mile long and consists of a main loop and short spur. It consists of 77,463 acres in Texas and an additional 15,860 acres in Oklahoma. The National Grasslands are under the administration of the United States Department of Agriculture, and aremanaged by
CACHE RIVER STATE NATURAL AREA The Cache River State Natural Area, located in Southern Illinois, is 14,960 acres managed by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources. A canoe might be the best way to explore the wetlands, but there are also multiple access points with hiking trails and boardwalks. SHAWNEE NATIONAL FOREST Pamona Natural Bridge. Bell Smith Springs. Trigg Tower. Not much to see from the tower, but it would be a good viewpoint for fall colors. EMERALD BOTANIC GARDENS Emerald is a small town in the Central Highlands Region of Queensland with a long history of industry and agriculture. A passerby through town might notice the small brown sign near the highway bridge over the Nogoa River, “Botanic Gardens.”. Having a couple of hours to spare after flying into the Emerald Airport, and not finding any KEITH LONGHURST RESERVE Keith Longhurst Reserve. Keith Longhurst Reserve, aka The Basin, is located near the town of Kentlyn, NSW, on the George’s River and is only five minutes’ drive from the many hotels and restaurants of Campbelltown. This reserve appears to be managed by the Campbelltown Council, as they produce the brochures and online information. FOSSIL BUTTE NATIONAL MONUMENT Fossil Butte National Monument consists of 8,198 acres in south-west Wyoming. The major feature is a flat hill made of sedimentary lake bottom deposits. These deposited layers contain fossils of fish, invertebrates, and insects from 48-53 million years ago. Approximately 18,000 people visit the park each year, but on this warm early-winterday

MCALLISTER COUNTY PARK The McAllister County Park itself is only 113 acres, but by walking the shore line around the entire property it’s possible to log a hike over three miles long. I started at the parking area and followed the water’s edge to the base of the cobble dunes. From this point I climbed over the hill of loose sand and cobbles to the saddle of the RITA BLANCA NATIONAL GRASSLAND Rita Blanca National Grassland. Raton, New Mexico has been my home for almost 20 years. I like it for the generally mild climate and authentic Western atmosphere. You won't find a bunch of tourist trap shops, the town hasn't "re-invented" itself with phony kitsch, and the area hasn't been affected by modern developments or urban sprawl. RED RIVER MINING DISTRICT Red River Mining District – ghosttowns.placesandpics.com. Mining in Red River, New Mexico began in the 1870s and a post office was established in 1895. In 1905 the mining slowed, and in 1931 serious mining efforts finally ended. By then tourism had replaced mining as the local economic base. MONTAUK AIR FORCE STATION The Air Force station was decommissioned in 1981, and in 2002 the property was opened to the public as a New York State Park. The park offers hiking trails, interpretive signs, access to the rocky beach, and picnic day-use facilities. With the exception of the main radar installation, visitors can walk throughout the entire military base. LUSK CREEK WILDERNESS Lusk Creek Wilderness. Lusk Creek Wilderness is 6,298 acres of Forest Service land in the Shawnee National Forest. The area also includes specially designated natural areas that are state land. Ancho was yet another small mining and industrial town, this one with a railroad depot, that had a post office from 1902 until 1969. The depot and some houses are visible from the road. A church that appears to be still in use is located nearby, as well as a couple of occupied ranch houses. NEWNESINDUSTRIALRUINS NewnesIndustrialRuins – ghosttowns.placesandpics.com. The Newnes Industrial Ruins are located in the Wolgan Valley, which is easily accessible from Lithgow. The property is managed by the Wollemi National Park, and the NSW Parks and Wildlife Service has constructed a mapped trail through the ruins. The ruins are easily accessible byvehicle.

Sherman describes Anchor: About a half a mile east of Midnight was the mining town of Anchor. The settlement’s life was brief, and it’s doubtful that it supported any businesses or much of a population. BELL NM – GHOSTTOWNS.PLACESANDPICS.COM Located on Johnson Mesa, Bell was a small agricultural town that had a post office from 1891-1933. The remnants of Bell today are limited to the St. John’s church and the Johnson Mesa Cemetery. Whatever other buildings once existed at the Bell town site have been completely obliterated.
