BEAUTIFUL PEOPLE
What is it like, day-to-day, to be remarkably attractive? I want to make one thing clear right off the bat: this collection isn’t an attack on attractive people, or the act of finding them attractive.LOCAL FLAVOR
Roe House ∞ Here in the US, most restaurants use salmon roe sparsely, usually serving a small amount of these fish eggs on a piece of nigiri sushi. But in Japan and in Japanese communities in America (I grew up in Los Angeles, and frequented Little Tokyo, Gardena, and Torrance), you can buy whole bowls of salmon roe (“ikura”) oversushi rice.
COMING HOME
In Side Out ∞ The side door to my parents’ house was the only door I ever used to enter the house. I’d walk in slowly, stalling before telling them about a car window I broke, or walk in late, feeling invincible after spending time with my first love. IN DEEP - BODIES OF WATER BRING US COMFORT, EUPHORIA, LIFE Ik Kil Cenote ∞ During an adventure through Mexico, my best friend and I stopped at a Mayan Village called Ik Kil. We were told that there was a cold cenote (or sinkhole) nearby for swimming, but since it was pouring rain, we weren’t too excited about it. THE BEST OF SMALL TOWN AMERICA Waimea, Hawaii ∞ My parents raised my brother and I to be city kids. They showed us how to ride the buses alone before our baby teeth fell out, took us to work at soup kitchens on Thanksgivings, and had us march through museums and sit through operas.INFRASTRUCTURE
Infrastructure is important. Normally that statement would seem mundane, but Japan’s near-simultaneous earthquake, tsunami, and nuclear crisis has provided a graphic reminder about the centrality of infrastructure in our lives — and the extent of our dependence uponit.
PORTRAIT OF A PLACE: PARIS First things first: Please invite me to Paris. I visited for the first time recently after years of dreaming about it. The city streets, with their striped awnings and cobblestone roads and strung lights, were anaesthetic treat.
YOUR BEST PHOTO STORIES Editor's picks: See the world through the eyes of Pictory contributors. The One Who Got Away. Secrets of Inspiring Women. New York City. For the Love of the Game SECRETS OF INSPIRING WOMEN Celebrating Pictory’s first anniversary with advice worth repeating. Best thing I ever learned from Scrabble: Apparently it’s considered bad manners to complain about your tiles at the National Scrabble Tournament, because everyone’s luck balances out in the long run. THE ONE WHO GOT AWAY Stories of young love, true love, lost love. Mystery Becomes Her ∞ Our love of the unknown took us through fifteen states and eight countries, but our playful intimacy made its home in the little-discovered paths, corners, shops, cafes, facades, and vistas ofSan Francisco.

LIFE LESSONS
Mom in Me ∞ I used to think that my mother’s warmth and openness made her naive and caused her to be used by other people. And like many daughters, I resisted adopting any characteristics that were reminiscent of my mother. OVERSEAS AND OVERWHELMED Bright Lights, Ancient City ∞ After an amazing meal and a bottle of red wine in Orvieto, Italy, I explored the city’s narrow alleyways. I could hear faint music escaping from trattorias and coffee shops as the Umbria Jazz Festival buzzed along. PORTRAIT OF A PLACE: PARIS First things first: Please invite me to Paris. NEIGHBORHOOD TREASURE Brea’s Best ∞ The best spot in my neighborhood is clearly labeled; Brea’s Best has been the highlight of Brea, California, since my childhood friends and I had enough allowance to pay for fries and root beer.During our junior high years we were pulled apart by different cliques, hobbies, and sports teams, but every Friday we were reunited by our appreciation for fries and burgers.NOTE TO SELF
Photographer: Konstantin Golovchinsky I am a Los Angeles based fine-art photographer. The above image launched a photo project called Message in a Bottle. Using the same Moleskine journal, I ask people to write one of three messages, the options are: 1.SUMMER JOBLESS
Photographer: Jill Ettinger Jill Ettinger is a writer and photographer focused on modern cultural expressions such as food, music, and healing modalities. She’s a regular contributer to Examiner, Reality Sandwich, and Evolver. LONDON - FALL IN LOVE WITH THIS PICTURESQUE CITY, FROM THE I don’t know London as an insider. I don’t always catch cultural jokes on British TV shows, I can’t name many members of the Royal Family, and I think ploughman’s plates taste funny. I have, however, spent enough time in the UK to know that London fashion is a good few years ahead of the curve, bitter lemon tastes delicious with gin, and that newspaper peddlers can be quite aggressive.ARE YOU THERE, DAD?
The Man in Me ∞ I was raised by strong, independent women. But I could never forget my father. He left for California after a bitter divorce, and more than a decade later, I followed him in search of amale role model.
