Today we would like to invite you to spend the weekend with us and the artists Phill Niblock & Katherine Liberovskaya. Regardless of what you know about the work of Phill and Katherine, speaking to someone like Perry is always interesting. Perry is a sound artist and the creator of the Oda speakers, which you will hear more about later this summer. Perry says: “Phill Niblock is often labelled a minimalist. This amounts to a dismissal. I would say monumentalist, because the sound is so thoroughly consuming, and commanding of attention. As when a tree falls in a forest, if you’re not giving this music your full attention does it even exist?” Phill and Katherine have been collaborating together since the early 2000’s. In the past week, Perry has been working with them almost daily with sound-checks in advance of this weekend’s shows. “You know, Katherine Liberovskaya is well known as a video artist, often collaborating with musicians to provide a visual element with musical qualities”, Perry says. “What I think is really interesting is, on this occasion, she is a musician. In this context she performs sound with visual qualities. Katherine Liberovskaya is a Canadian intermedia artist based in New York City. Involved in experimental video since the 80’s, she has produced numerous single-channel video art pieces, video installations and video performances, as well as works in other media, that have shown around the world. Since 2001 her work predominantly focuses on the intersection of moving image with sound/music in various both ephemeral and fixed forms (projections, installations, performance), notably through collaborations with many composers and sound artists in improvised live video+sound concert situations where her live visuals seek to create improvisatory “music” for the eyes. Phill Niblock is the director of the Experimental Intermedia Foundation since 1985. During his carreer, he realized more than 1000 performances, was the conservator of the novative XI Records label, and launched a second EI Space in Ghent, Belgium. http://artmuse.eu/bocholt/ The Spinning Mill in Bocholt The old spinning mill, which is currently under reconstruction, will open its doors for two summer days, the artMUSE Festival in Bolcholt. artMUSE is the very first event taking place at the almost renovated spinning mill. Therefore the curatorial concept is strongly based on the venue’s atmosphere and its future role in forming the culture of Bocholt and the region. The spinning mill was the witness of industrial revolution, the flourish of textile industry; it was abandoned as the postindustrial and digital revolution made it economically inefficient and finally useless. The artists invited to artMUSE Festival are all reflecting on this phenomena, the changes brought by digital revolution in the society , the industry culture and the region’s everyday life. The invited artists using the tools of new media, basically digital equipment to evoke different segments of the above mentioned historical and present issues. Furthermore the artworks are “woven through” with references to textile. Phill Niblock (b. 1933, USA) is an artist whose fifty-year career spans minimalist and experimental music, film and photography. Since 1985, he has served as director of Experimental Intermedia, a foundation for avant-garde music based in New York with a branch in Ghent, and curator of the foundation’s record label XI. Known for his thick, loud drones of music, Niblock’s signature sound is filled with microtones of instrumental timbres that generate many other tones in the performance space. In 2013, his diverse artistic career was the subject of a retrospective realised in partnership between Circuit (Contemporary Art Centre Lausanne) and Musée de l’Elysée.
