WHAT SHOULD I DO IF MY DOG VOMITS UP HIS On rare occasions, pets may vomit after receiving heartworm medication. In these circumstances, the best option is to try another dose in a few days, and/or give the dose with a small amount of food. These medications have a wide range of safety, thus allowing for the additional dose. If vomiting still occurs, the pet may be allergic tothe
TREATMENT OPTIONS FOR CANINE DEGENERATIVE DISC DISEASE One of the most painful and frustrating diseases to treat in dogs is degenerative disc disease. This common condition can be seen in any breed, but is particularly common in long-backed breeds which tend to gain weight, such as Dachshunds, Beagles, and Bassett Hounds to name just a few. In healthy dogs, the disc material between the spinal vertebrae acts like shock absorbers in allowing LONG TERM USE OF PREDNISONE IN PETS In some sensitive pets, gastrointestinal erosion and ulceration may occur, leading to bleeding and possibly anemia. Whenever a pet is on long-term Prednisone, it is always worthwhile asking about other alternative drugs, including other anti-inflammatory agents, including antihistamines, as well as other immune suppressive agents such as ANXIETY PET MEDS FOR THUNDERSTORMS Thunderstorm phobias are a common behavioral issue for both dogs and cats, and my clients ask for my recommendations on ways to help calm their pet’s anxiety. Initially, I will suggest natural remedies such as Be Serene or Composure. I will also sometimes recommend bach flowers used in Rescue Remedy for Pets, or mimulus or rock rose available from health food stores. WHAT CAUSES THE RED STAINING UNDER MY DOG'S EYES When the fur around the eyes stays moist, it can also lead to the growth of yeast and bacteria. Ptyrosporin, commonly known as “red yeast” also causes the familiar reddish-brown staining, and may result in a bad odor. If your dog has excessive tearing, check with your vet to determine if there is an underlying medical cause for theepiphora
WHY DOES MY DOG’S SKIN SMELL BAD? One of the most common dermatological complaints in the veterinary clinic is the complaint that a dog’s skin smells bad. By far, the most common causes of offensive smelling skin are overgrowth of yeast or bacteria. Yeast and/or bacteria may overgrow for many possible reasons, including underlying inhalant/contact allergies, flea bite allergies, as well as food allergies. WHY DO MANY CATS HAVE A SAGGY BELLY? Unlike most dogs that generally have firm bellies, this pouch of saggy skin just in front of the rear legs is common in cats and can often be seen swinging merrily from side to side as the cat trots along. While some people mistakenly assume the cat develops this excess flesh as a result of being spayed or neutered, it’s actually a normal UNDESCENDED TESTICLES IN PUPPIES During physical exam of young male puppies, a veterinarian will examine closely to determine whether both testicles have descended into the scrotum. Testicles will usually descend into the scrotum within a few days of birth, but in some puppies this may be delayed for up to 6 months. Usually if the testicles do not descend by 6 months of age, they usually will not in the future. HOW LONG DOES OPENED, CANNED PET FOOD REMAIN SAFE? This releases the aroma of the food, and many pets (cats especially) do not like cold food. Any uneaten pet food in the open can should be discarded within 3 days after opening. If you tend to store a lot of opened cans of pet food in the refrigerator, use a marker to write directly on the can the date that can was opened. COMMON CAUSES FOR BLOOD IN YOUR PET’S STOOL OR URINE Blood in the stool is most commonly due to colitis, which is an inflammation of the lining of the colon. One of the first tests that should be performed on a pet with blood in its stool is a fecal check for intestinal parasites to look for roundworms, hookworms or whipworms. Giardia is also a common intestinal parasite that may causevomiting

WHAT TO DO WHEN PET'S FLEA MEDICATION STOPS WORKING First, I ensure the pet owner is correctly applying the flea medication to his or her pet. It is important to completely part the hair and apply the product directly to the skin so that proper skin and hair follicle distribution can occur. This is something that can be somewhat of a challenge for thick haired pets; however, the petmedication
WHAT IS THE BEST MATERIAL FOR PET FOOD BOWLS? Pet food bowls are available in a wide assortment of sizes and materials. Many people choose plastic pet food bowls because they are readily available, inexpensive and come in lots of colors and sizes. However, a plastic bowl might not be the best choice for your pet’s food bowls. Downsides of plastic: Plastic food bowls can get small scratches over time which trap and hold bacteria that HOW TO DETERMINE THE CORRECT SYRINGE FOR YOUR PET'S 20 units per 1/2 cc OR 50 units per 1/2 cc. 10 units per 1/4 cc OR 25 units per 1/4 cc. (Keep in mind that 1cc = 1 ml) This number of UNITS that the insulin is marked for is essential for the syringe to draw up the correct quantity of insulin. Insulin U40 must be used in U40 syringes. U100 insulin needs to be used in U100 syringes. RESPIRATORY EMERGENCIES (WHEEZING OR COUGHING) IN DOGS Many dogs can display respiratory symptoms ranging from: The common kennel cough Signs of increased yellow or green eye or nasal discharge Varying degrees or coughing or wheezing. The sound of the cough itself can vary. For coughs similar to the sound of a goose honking, this is most typical of either kennel cough or an anatomic or inflammatory problem of the airways. THE FIVE W’S OF DOGS THAT SCOOT This is the million dollar question. There are quite a number of reasons why your dog might be scooting. Some are a lot more common than others and some have a much easier remedy: Anal Sac. Inflammation of the anal sac is the number one cause of scooting. This is usually accompanied by a foul odor and possibly discharge. TREATMENTS FOR DRY EYES IN DOGS For many years I have suffered from dry and red eyes. I often get asked if I have been crying or if I was up late. The response is always the same, “I have light, sensitive eyes and I’m particularly vulnerable to getting red eyes, especially during the time of year when the pollen count is high.” Dry eyes occur in pets as well, and it occurs when there isn’t PETMEDS® WHY DOGS BITE OR CHEW THEIR NAILS “Why does my pet bite his nails or toes so much?” is a very common question presented to veterinarians. Often clients mistakenly think that it is a nervous habit or that their pet’s nails are too long. In the vast majority of cases, however, this annoying symptom (which can sometimes lead to secondary redness, inflammation and bacterial or yeast infection of the feet) is usually due to IS CLUMPING LITTER SAFE FOR CATS? Part of having a cat in your life means dealing with the litter box. Nowadays, many cat owners appreciate the convenience of clumping cat litter, which makes it easy to scoop both solid and liquid waste from your cat’s litter box. The obvious advantage is that the litter box smells fresh for longer, reducing the frequency of completely changing out and replacing the litter. PETMEDS® DIABETIC PETS AND GLUCOSAMINE JOINT SUPPLEMENTS A question often asked by clients who own diabetic pets is, “Is it ok to give a diabetic pet glucosamine joint supplements?” In my experience and opinion, I have not found the small amounts of glucose (sugar) in glucosamine joint supplements harmful to diabetic pets, and in most of my cases I’ve not seen a problem with diabetic regulation. However, every pet is a unique individual, and WHAT SHOULD I DO IF MY DOG VOMITS UP HIS On rare occasions, pets may vomit after receiving heartworm medication. CAN’T DECIDE BETWEEN ORAL AND TOPICAL PET MEDS? January 25, 2015 by Dr. Dym. One of the most common questions veterinarians receive regarding the use of monthly flea / heartworm medications is whether topical or oral formulations should be used.
