GROWING CONDITIONS
Soil Pawpaws are flexible in their soil requirements. The main thing is good drainage. The soil must be well drained. Soil pH should be moderately acid to neutral, in the range of 5.5 to 7.0.POLLINATION
Pawpaw trees are self-infertile, although exceptions are possible. Therefore, for good fruit set each variety must be fertilized with pollen from a different variety of pawpaw tree. POTOMAC® — PETERSON PAWPAWS Potomac. A sister variety to Susquehanna with even larger fruit. Originated from an orchard near the Potomac river. A favorite of John Popenoe. Key Features of the Potomac pawpaw: WABASH® — PETERSON PAWPAWS Wabash. This was a favorite tree of Dr. Kirk Pomper at Kentucky State University, who insisted I should name my variety after Wabash because the round fruit resembled cannonballs.GERMINATE SEEDS
Seed Germination. Pawpaw seed is slow to germinate, but it is not difficult to grow seedlings if certain procedures are followed. Do not allow the seed to freeze or dry out, because this can destroy the immature, dormant embryo. INTRODUCING TALLAHATCHIE Neal discovered this clone in row 10 of his orchard at the Wye Research & Education Center (Maryland). It was a seedling from a tree growing at the Blandy Experimental Farm.TALLAHATCHIE
Tallahatchie This is my seventh variety. Three unrelated people wrote in 2017 asking to buy this, an unreleased selection they had tasted in university trial orchards.SUSQUEHANNA®
Susquehanna. Ah, my personal favorite. (But everyone has personal favorites.) It is large, extremely few seeds, and firm melting texture. Quite sweet with strong pawpaw flavor. GROWING CONDITIONS. Soil. Pawpaws are flexible in their soil requirements. The main thing is good drainage. The soil must be well drained. Soil pH should be moderately acid to neutral, in the range of 5.5 to 7.0. Pawpaws are happiest in a rich, deep, loamy soil with high organic matter content. In addition, they appreciate an organic mulch. INTRODUCING TALLAHATCHIE It was a seedling from a tree growing at the Blandy Experimental Farm. Consequently, it was propagated in the Regional Variety Trials, conducted at various universities. Tallahatchie has impressed many people.GERMINATE SEEDS
After stratification the seed should be sown 1 inch (2.5 cm) deep in a well-aerated soil mix, pH 5.5-7, with an optimum temperature of 75° - 85° F (24° - 29° C). Use tall containers, such as tree pots (ht. 14 in - 18 in / 35 - 45 cm) or root trainers (ht. 10 in / 25 cm), to accommodate the longPOLLINATION
Neal never used attractants and still had good pollination. Pollination is weather dependent. Cold, rainy, breezy weather is not conducive to fly (or bee) activity and can result in low fruit set.
