Meditation works best when there's no trying or effort. It's about allowing the mind to relax. Once you stop all effort and striving, you'll find the mind settles down naturally into a state of quiet. The course takes you from basic practices of being present to some of the new techniques that Peter has been teaching his students in recentyears.

EFFORTLESS MEDITATION A quiet mind is not a state of mind to be achieved. It is the state we experience when there is nothing to be achieved. It is the mind in its natural condition, untarnished by fears and desires, and the thoughts they create. When everything is OK in our world, we feel OK inside; ADVANTAGE OF MIND MAPS Associations and connections between key words and ideas not readily apparent. Attention wanders easily. Lack of color and other visual qualities handicap memory. Traditional notes aid forgetting not memory. Mind maps work the way the brain works -- which is not in nice neat lines. Memory is naturally associative, not linear. THE PARABLE OF THE ROPE The Parable of the Rope. We are like a person holding on to a piece of rope. He holds on for dear life, knowing that if he were to let go he would fall to his death. His parents, his teachers, and many others have told him this is so; and when he looks around he can see everyone else doing the same. Nothing would induce him to let go.WHAT IS WISDOM?
We build up understandings about the world, ourselves, and other people. Wisdom concerns how we use our knowledge. Its essence is discernment. Discernment of right from wrong. Helpful from harmful. Truth from delusion. We may, for example, come to understand that deep down each of us wants to be loved and appreciated. We usually think of “concentrating the mind” as focusing our attention on some experience—a process that can take effort and discipline, particularly if we are trying to keep the mind concentrated. While this approach can be useful at times, I find another interpretation of concentration equally valuable. RETURNING TO NATURAL MIND When it is fully relaxed, totally at ease, we rediscover the mind in its natural, undisturbed state. In Indian philosophy the profound and delightful ease of natural mind is called Nirvana. To many, the word conjures images of some blissed out, euphoric state of consciousness. We all experience a sense of personal self, a "me" that is reading these words, an individual with its own thoughts and opinions, likes and dislikes.
