The ethics earth care, people care and fair share form the foundation for permaculture design and are also found in most traditional societies. Ethics are culturally evolved mechanisms that regulate self-interest, giving us a better understanding of good and bad outcomes. The greater the power of humans, the more critical ethics become for long-term cultural and biological survival. THE FUNDAMENTALS OF ROCKET STOVES Rocket stoves are open where the wood is fed in, allowing lots of oxygen to be drawn into the unit. As the fire starts, and the burn tunnel heats up, the rising hot air races up the heat riser, drawing lots of air behind it. PERMACULTURE ETHICS
By accepting personal responsibility for our situation as far as possible, rather than blaming others, we empower ourselves. If we can recognise that a greater wisdom lies within a group of people, we can work with others to bring about the best outcomes for all involved. The permaculture approach is to focus on the positives, theopportunities
PERMACULTURE DESIGN PRINCIPLE 9: USE SMALL AND SLOW SOLUTIONS The snail is both small and slow, it carries its home on its back and can withdraw to defend itself when threatened. The proverb “the bigger they are, the harder they fall” reminds us of the disadvantages of excessive size and growth while “slow and steady wins the race” encourages patience while reflecting on a commontruth in nature
PERMACULTURE DESIGN PRINCIPLE 3: 'OBTAIN A YIELD' Ensure that you are getting truly useful rewards as part of the work that you are doing. The icon of this design principle, a vegetable with a bite out of it, shows us that there is an element of competition in obtaining a yield, whilst the proverb “You can’t work on an empty stomach” reminds us that we must get immediate rewards to sustain us. CAN MOONLIGHT AFFECT PLANT GROWTH? Most plants seem to need a rhythmic exposure to moonlight—at least for a week or so around the full moon—for optimal immunity, wound healing, regeneration, and growth. Plant harvesting should ideally heed the lunar cycle, not simply for potency and low water content, but because many plants (especially strong, vigorous growers) recover PERMACULTURE PRINCIPLES Permaculture is a creative design process based on whole-systems thinking informed by ethics and design principles that feature on this site. Essence of Permaculture A summary of permaculture concept and principles taken from Permaculture Principles and Pathways Beyond Sustainability by David Holmgren.. It contains an introduction to permaculture, thoughts about the future of the movement and PERMACULTURE DESIGN PRINCIPLE 1: 'OBSERVE AND INTERACT' The herder monitors the health, well-being and feeding of the cows through the course of daily tasks. Over time that person gets to know each of the cows by name, how old they are and how they are related. By keeping closely connected, the herder builds trust and both cows and people gain a sense of well-being from those relationships. PERMACULTURE DESIGN PRINCIPLE 10: USE AND VALUE DIVERSITY Finding a balance in the garden. Replicating natural systems can reduce inputs and maintenance to our gardens. Anni Kelsey uses a mix of perennial plants; including vegetables, herbs, flowers and some ‘weeds’ in a polyculture to create a mini-ecosystem and boost biodiversity. Adding ‘chop and drop’ mulch and leaving the soillargely
PERMACULTURE DESIGN PRINCIPLE 2: 'CATCH AND STORE ENERGY' Cut, crushed and stored in jars, this surplus energy is the goodness of thousands of local flowers made accessible. This rich food can be stored indefinitely and used as a sweetener, in fermented drinks or as a medicine. The remaining wax can be used for sealing inoculated THE CHIKUKWA PROJECT The Chikukwa Project is a feel good story out of Africa. For the last 20 years an incredible permaculture project has been growing in Zimbabwe. Where once the people of the Chikukwa villages suffered hunger, malnutrition and high rates of disease, this community has turned its fortunes around using permaculture farming techniques.PERMACULTURE ETHICS
There are many ways that we benefit from giving a fair share of the bounty to others in our community. The growth in human consumption and the accelerating extinction of species make clear the impossibility of continuous growth. Sometimes we need to make hard decisions and consider what enough is. We need to focus on what is appropriate forus

In fact fish have a markedly better feed conversion ratio than any other farmed livestock. Obtain a yield. Aquaponics is an intensive form of food production and can be very high yielding. Apply self-regulation and accept feedback. HARVEST THE BOUNTY FOR LATER Put a bucket or so of soft ripe plums into a very large pot with a cup of water and slowly bring to the boil. WHAT IS PERMACULTURE? Permaculture is a creative design process based on whole-systems thinking informed by ethics and design principles that feature on thissite.
This approach guides us to mimic the patterns and relationships we can find in nature and can be applied to all aspects of human habitation, from agriculture to ecological building, from appropriate technology to education and even economics. By adopting the ethics and applying these principles in our daily life we can make the transition from being dependent consumers to becoming responsible producers. This journey builds skills and resilience at home and in our local communities that will help us prepare for an uncertain future with less available energy. The techniques and strategies used to apply these principles vary widely depending on the location, climatic conditions and resources that are available. The methods may differ, but the foundations to this wholistic approach remain constant. By learning these principles you can acquire valuable thinking tools that help you become more resilient in an era of change. EXPLORE THE PRINCIPLES You can begin by exploring this website, focusing on an area of interest or step-by-step by clicking on the bike icon to discover examples of how permaculture can be applied and the thinking behindthe concept.
