FINAL PROJECT: PODCAST Podcasts are an easily accessible form of entertainment or news for anyone with the app. This ever growing field of media caters to all interests. They provide audio and sometimes video recordings of varying topics that range from comedy, to politics, to storytelling. The use of podcasting for news media opens new avenues for consumers and producers to stay connected to what is going on in a convenient way. Compared to other forms of media, podcasts do not require visual attention in the way the watching broadcasts or reading articles does. Reading words off of a page or a screen with an author’s name at the top delivers the story, but hearing them tell it adds an extra layer of meaning. The first-person narrative or group discussion is easy to listen to while providing a personal connection to what they share. My group’s main project was to bring in four students from the University of Arkansas and have a group interview over immigration. At KUAF, the university’s local NPR radio station, we recorded our first episode of “Common Grounds”. This podcast sought to acquire different political perspectives and place them across the table from each other to discuss current events and policies. Initially we wanted a male and female republican, and respective democratic counterparts. Our actual composition was more diverse containing a semi-Marxist perspective, a classical liberal or libertarian view, as well as a modern day liberal and conservative. One of the guest’s parents were immigrants, which provided a direct relation to the topic of the day. Overall, the group of students were cordial and respectful of each other, while discussing and arguing different ideas. By the end of the podcast, the entirety of the team and guests felt as if we had all advanced our understanding of immigration, and how to enter into a civil debate. Podcasts promote this style of engagement in an organized setting. The use of podcasting in education provides opportunities for students that benefit team work, speaking and interviewing skills, audio recording and editing experience, as well as social networking. Aside from the group’s recording, I recorded a podcast with Josh Braun of CNN. He is an executive producer of Wolf Blitzer’s show, and the programmer/designer of their Magic Wall which is used for election cycle broadcasts. With a diverse background including medicine, CAD design, and broadcasting to name a few, his perspective on the current state of media and the government are unique. Neither he or I had recorded a podcast before, but once we began the conversation it came together quickly and was over before we knew it. Knowing that we could edit afterwards helped in the recording process, because we knew we could restate something if we so desired. In addition to the guest interviews, my team decided we wanted to have a musical intro for our project. This gave me the chance to record myself playing guitar and editing portions of a short melody for use in our final edits. Podcasting welcomes creativity. Whether it helps to accent your show, or a podcast that showcases talent, the world of podcasting supports creators. Beginning your own podcast only requires a microphone and something to talk about.

The world of journalism can be adventurous, dangerous, and exciting, as newsworthy stories are taking place everywhere. Journalists are the public’s eyes and ears to the world.  They must pursue the truth and recount it in a way that portrays what is going on, how it came about, and why it is important. The messages published by reporters might not be well received by everybody, but if the writer follows the Professional Journalists Code of Ethics, their work should be protected by the community. The journalism community will defend each other, even when political interests differ, because ultimately the profession and nature of journalism cannot be restricted by the government or people in power. For the future of journalism, I hope these aspects remain, but the opportunity for growth is available. The internet and social media provide an immediate and vast platform to produce or consume news media, as well as enter open discussions with individuals across the world like many do on websites such as Twitter or Facebook. The government and media influence our thoughts and actions. Educating the public on how to choose a reliable news source, and what misinformation can do to society should be imperative to ensure the advancement of journalism and society as a whole. There has never been a better time for finding information, but with power comes responsibility. Overall, the greatest challenge for journalists and consumers is adapting to new and ever changing technology, while discerning what is right and

With Democrats gaining 37 seats in the House of Representatives, the availability to provide checks and balances is restored. Women proved to be winners during this election cycle with over one hundred women taking seats in Congress. Several states held key elections, with several elections coming down to a difference of a few thousand votes. The campaigning and rallies fired up the individual bases, and resulted in heated races throughout the country. President Trump held several rallies in key states during the race, which bolstered the Republican base. The polls held high turnouts across the nation, but the voting process was not flawless everywhere. In Georgia, accusations of voter suppression were brought up after several thousand voters had problems casting their ballots due to registration issues, long polling lines, absentee ballots denied due to discrepancies, and more. Many of these restrictions were put in place by the Georgia Secretary of State, Brian Kemp, who subsequently was running for the states’ gubernatorial election, in which he narrowly won. While most of the voters who experienced these restrictions had their issues resolved, there was still mass confusion throughout the process, ultimately hindering democracy. Stacey Abrams, the Democratic gubernatorial nominee, has stated she will file a federal lawsuit against the state of Georgia due to the mismanagement of the election. North Dakota was also featured in headlines during this cycle for its restrictive voter ID laws that mostly affected Native Americans living on reservations in the state. Despite the law requiring street addresses, which many tribal lands do not have, to vote, Native Americans voted by the thousands to produce some of the highest numbers in the past decade. With voter suppression occurring across the country, and marginalized groups receiving the brunt of the law, reform must be had to reinstall the freedom of democracy to everyone. A United States Senate runoff will be held on November 27 in Mississippi between Republican Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith and Democratic candidate Mike Espy. This election would not flip the Senate if the Democratic nominee wins, but would draw the margin to 52-48 leaving only a thin line between the control. Overall, the Democrats are hoping for evidence of political transformation in the South during these heated partisan times. President Trump will be rallying in Mississippi for Cindy Hyde-Smith leading up to the runoff election. In the Florida Senate election, Senator Bill Nelson recently conceded to Governor Rick Scott after losing by as little as 10,000 votes. The Florida election required two exhaustive recounts to finalize the election. At first, a machine recount was used, but there were submission issues and a hand recount was required. State election supervisors are under fire as voting restriction was also an issue during the race, and the new Republican Governor Ron DeSantis is expected to investigate and resolve the problems experienced. The results of the House being won by the Democrats will be a test for Trump’s presidency. With the first two years of his leadership being controlled by Republicans, he will now be left to answer to the Democratic majority in the house. The House of Representatives are able to protect the Mueller investigation if it is ended by the president. They are also able to investigate President Trump’s tax returns, ethical concerns, and more. This will be a trying time for President Trump, as he has not had to answer to Democrat’s too often thus far in his presidency. The threat of Democratic subpoena will challenge the president, and his actions and reactions during their House rule could threaten his presidency, should they pursue those options. President Trump proclaimed victory for his party after the elections, despite the House flipping. During the upcoming months, we will see if this victory will be worthwhile, and if he won a battle or

hypothetical war.

Knowing how to approach voting in the midterms can be difficult and with the numerous names on the ballot, casting your vote can seem daunting. The voting process can be much easier if you prepare however. For instance, voters are able to bring in a pre-filled example ballot if they choose to, so they can prepare their votes in advance, outside the pressure of the public. If there is a position or candidate that is unknown to you, the option to leave a position blank is available, allowing voters to only vote on the positions and candidates they are familiar with. The ballot is not a test, but voters are encouraged to research who is on the ballot so they might be able to cast an educated vote for every position. Midterm elections should be treated as important, if not more importantly than presidential elections. The public should take up their civic duty and exercise their rights, to ensure the sovereignty of democracy. All of the potential votes that went un-cast could have changed an election such as Florida’s senate race. It is imperative that the importance of midterm elections and how to cast an educated vote are clearly depicted to all. Election education should be pursued individually, but explored collectively. Discussing political candidates can cause divide, but talking about how to research them and the voting process can promote beneficial voting habits. Elections center around individual candidates, but the results lie in the

voters’ hands.

The age of the internet has opened up several mediums in which news can be shared. Podcasts serve as one way to listen to the news you want, when you want. There is no need to set aside time to sit down and watch the certain network or journalist you prefer. Podcasts are pre-recorded audio and sometimes video reports or discussion with guests. The option to choose a news provider, on a topic, for free, creates a user friendly and informative platform that has taken off over the past decade. Listening to podcasts is easily accompanied with tasks and work, and many listeners turn towards them for this reason. There is an immeasurable number of podcasts within each genre, especially news, and with the ever increasing popularity of the app it can be difficult to decide which podcasts to listen to. Below are a few news podcasts that are short and informative: * NPR’s “Up First” podcast is updated once daily, early in the morning. Starting off with soft background music leading up to an introduction of todays news, this is an easy podcast to listen to while you get ready in the morning. Covering the biggest news stories that occurred in the last day, their range of topics will keep you

informed.

* The Wall Street Journal podcast “What’s News” is a similar podcast that updates everyday and is about 15 minutes long. Besides providing a different journalism team, this podcast brings in outside sources who dedicate their work to the topic being discussed. This provides a descriptive analysis of what is going on from someone who is in the field. These first two podcasts are insightful and well rounded without taking heaps of time to listen to. * The 5 minute long “News Now” podcast by NPR, has proven to be a go to source for the most recent news of the day. With updates every hour, this concise podcast explains what breaking news is happening without discussions or opinions. Typically covering a few topics in a single session, the information is easy to follow and because it is updated so often, you will always be in the know. There are numerous other podcasts out there and the app compiles them into separate categories, alongside a top podcasts chart that highlights successful episodes or channels. This form of broadcast media allows for a convenient method to follow the news or any topic you are interested in. The opportunity to learn or be entertained is just a podcast away.

BRETT KAVANAUGH PT. 2 Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh is facing two more sexual assault allegations. On September 23 the second allegation was released to the public and on the 26th the third allegation was brought forth by the recently infamous attorney, Michael Avenatti, who released a declaration on his client’s behalf. President Trump continues to challenge and discredit these allegations via Twitter. He has attacked the democrats in saying they are playing a con game to discredit his nominee Brett Kavanaugh and delaying the confirmation. President Trump has also gone forward and defamed Michael Avenatti by calling him a “third rate lawyer” and a “total low life”. The second allegation comes from a woman that knew Judge Kavanaugh in college. Brett Kavanaugh’s college roommate came forward and defended this woman’s accusations saying that she was trustworthy, and that Brett Kavanaugh became aggressive when he was under the influence of alcohol during their time together in. The Democratic senators who received the information about the second allegation believe further investigations should be in order. This is upsetting the President and Republicans because this drawn out confirmation is looking to continue for more days to come. These calls for investigation are valid because the confirmation of a Supreme Court Justice is for life and it is imperative to ensure the most appropriate candidate for the position is confirmed. Brett Kavanaugh has repeatedly stated that the allegations brought forth to him are false claims, but with the increasing numbers of accusers coming forward, further investigation is necessary to determine whether or not these allegations are valid. This ongoing confirmation process has been a spectacle for the nation and a detriment to the Kavanaugh family. The family faces scrutiny from the media, public, and congressional members as this potential supreme court justice currently does not seem fit for the position amongst the accusations brought towards him. Dr. Ford, who first came out with allegations against Brett Kavanauagh, has been receiving death threats. The overall nature of this confirmation has been abnormal and hectic. The nation is once again divided by partisan politics and the ultimate result of the confirmation process will likely result in outcry from the downed party.

DIVERSITY ESSAY

The United States was founded by immigrants and serves as a new frontier for people of all race and backgrounds to seek a new life of freedom and prosperity. This opportunity is the basis for our country and the reason for its bounding success. Americans are provided the right to equal and fair treatment under our laws and statutes, but that has not always been the case. Minorities have been subjected to discrimination for centuries and are persecuted based on their skin color. The media play an important role in telling the story of what is happening now, but when it comes to minorities, the majority of their reporting covers crime. Continuously associating crime and race creates a potential for personal bias amongst some viewers and strengthens racist ideals, because they see their “evidence” on the news every night. While the crime receives attention, the troubles minorities face in their daily lives is looked over Racism as a function in society serves no purpose but to divide people and diminish their character. Racism has a long and grim history in the United States. Advocates for equality dedicated their lives to reinforce the belief of our nation’s founding fathers that “all men are created equal”. Martin Luther King Jr. dedicated his life to the civil rights movement and to the belief that the founders had written. Activists and martyrs alike have strived for equal treatment for decades, and while improvements have been made, the fight is far from over. Racism and bias still exists today in 2018. Despite living in the most connected society in human history, due to technology and communication abilities, racism still plays an unforgettable role in the discrimination of other races and cultures. This is propagated by the media at times through its selective use of headlines, pictures,

and stories.

African-Americans receive an unfair share of misrepresentation in reports, specifically for crime. In her book “Suspicion Nation”, Lisa Bloom wrote about a study reporting findings on racial perception in crime showing belief bias amongst participants. She reported that viewers who witnessed a crime story reported that 60 percent of participants falsely recalled seeing a picture of the perpetrator, despite there not being one. Of those 60 percent, 70 percent reported that the perpetrator was African-American, although they never saw anyone (Bloom, Charles). This can create a personal bias, for viewers, when it comes to who commits crime. This belief does not stem from the imagination, but from the information these individuals consume. Media outlets are known to reinforce the public’s opinions through their production of crime reporting. The quantity and quality of racial minorities in news reporting often represents crime for racial minorities as suspects and whites as victims (Charles). Viewers see this over representation and form beliefs based on the reporting that these races are inherently dangerous, and their bias strengthens. Often in headlines white criminals will have a professional or family photo to represent who they are as functional members of society. On the other hand, minorities are often represented by their mug shot or wearing a prison jumpsuit, showing them as a danger to society. This approach to reporting is dangerous and misrepresents the humanity of

these individuals.

Beyond the media reporting, discrimination can be seen in the criminal justice systems. The United States has the worlds highest imprisonment rate. Blacks and Latinos make up 28 percent of the general population, but make up 53 percent of the prison population (Gramlich). Prisons serve as a place of detainment in order to protect society from individuals that break the laws and pose a threat, but also to help those who find themselves in a situation where they need to break the law. Many of those imprisoned have been subjected to policies and laws that are directed at penalizing minorities. Incarcerated individuals in other countries, such as Norway where the recidivism rate is 20 percent, are encouraged to reform their ways and aided on their efforts to enter back into society (Sterbenz). The United States prison system shows little to no efforts to rehabilitate prisoners, so while they are “protecting” society from these criminals, there is no help to improve these people for their reentry into society. 50 percent of United States prisoners return to prison in three years and 55 percent in five years (_Bureau of Justice Statistics_). The result of these rates proves that there is intent to keep these people under control and not to support them. Private or for private prisons contain 133,000 or 8.4% of the US prison population (_Bureau of Justice Statistics_). These prisons rely on high incarceration rates to make money and have no incentive to change their ways. With limited media coverage, the stories revolved around the wrongdoings of the prisoners, but had nothing about the neglect of the prison. This style of reporting does not tell the entire story and continues to focus on crime. While their reporting on race and crime is clear, the need for rehabilitation reform is ignored. Although the media fails to bring attention to these issues, it is important for the public to demand coverage. CNN’s Steven Holmes said, “the media is biased, not liberal vs. conservative, but bad news over goods news.”  He further went on to say, “it is up to the public to demand what the media focuses on” (Holmes).  Racism in the United States will not be abolished without the public being informed about the reality minorities face. With many prisoners coming from low socioeconomic areas, the odds are already against them. Accompany limited individual resources with insufficient means of corrections and the prisoners are left with an unequal chance to assimilate back into society. The media cover the problems minorities create, but ignore the problems they face until it is often too late.

HURRICANE HARASSMENT President Trump denies the reality reported by George Washington University. Hurricane Maria wreaked havoc on Puerto Rico causing destruction and killing 3,000 people. He went so far as to say that this report was done by the Democrats to make him look bad. President Trump continues to claim success for his administration’s efforts in providing aid to the devastated Americans on the island. He claims they are an economic burden for his budget and makes it clear that Puerto Rican lives have a price, and the President was not willing to pay for them. A year after the hurricane, the island is still damaged and suffering. President Trump has attacked the Mayor of San Juan, Carmen Cruz, on twitter defending his administration’s response. Cruz has proven to be nothing but a servant on the island, working tirelessly to rebuild not only the city, but the morale of the people. President Trump is hiding from the fact his administration failed to administer proper care during and after the event. He fears negative feedback and fights any he receives claiming fake news or lashing out at those who denounce him. Tropical Storm Florence is currently barraging the East Coast with high winds and storm surges. This former hurricane is larger in surface area than the coast has experienced in decades. The storm creates the fear of flash flooding up to 9 feet. Casualties and billions of dollars in damage are expected. 15 inches of rain has fallen on North Carolina since the beginning of the storm, breaking records for the most amount of rain reported from a hurricane or tropical storm in the area. The storm will pass by the beginning of next week, but the flooding and water will reside for weeks to come. This flood water is not just rain and ocean, but sewage, wastewater, and runoff. Individuals who remained home to wait out the storm will rely on limited supplies and rescue crews to survive this storm. The United States National Guard has set aside thousands enlisted members for relief efforts. Alongside the government assistance, the infamous Cajun Navy, a volunteer group of mostly southerners with boats, are aiding the effort to rescue trapped residents as they have in the

past.

President Trump has stated that extensive resources are being sent to areas affected by the storm. FEMA, state authorities, and local authorities are in close coordination with this administration to mitigate the impact of the storm. 14 people have died and over 900 have been rescued so far. The East coast is banding together to survive the remainder of the storm and the weeks to come. All eyes are on President Trump and his administration, as they are under fire for their minimal efforts in Puerto Rico. The weather cannot be controlled, but the response from the government and the allocation of resources can alleviate and protect its citizens during times of need.
