The Red and White Diamond - The Official History of the 24th Battalion Australian Imperial Force 1915 - 1919 The 24th Battalion was formed during the first week of May 1915. On 4 September 1915 the Battalion went ashore at Gallipoli. It spent the next 16 weeks sharing duty in the Lone Pine trenches with the 23rd Battalion. The Battalion proceeded to France in March 1916. It took part in its first major offensive around Pozières and Mouquet Farm in July and August 1917.In May 1917 the battalion participated in the successful, but costly, second battle of Bullecourt. It was involved for only a single day - 3 May - but suffered almost 80 per cent casualties. The AIF's focus for the rest of the year was the Ypres sector in Belgium, and the 24th's major engagement there was the seizure of Broodseinde Ridge. When the Allies took to the offensive, the 24th fulfilled supporting roles during the battles of Hamel and Amiens. At Mont St Quentin, however, it played a major role by recapturing the main German strong point atop the summit on 1September 1918.
28th Battalion AIF - Unit History The 28th Battalion was raised at Blackboy Camp in Western Australia on 16 April 1915. The Story of the 21st - Being the Official History of the 21st Bn AIF The 38th Battalion AIF - The Story and Official History of the 38th Bn The 21st Battalion arrived in Egypt in June 1915 and proceeded to Gallipoli in late August. In early May 1917, the battalion fought at Bullecourt, and then in October participated in the 3-kilometre advance that captured Broodseinde Ridge, east of Ypres. The 21st battalion participated in the battles - Hamel, Amiens and Mont St. Quentin. The 21st could barely muster a company after the 1918 offensive. It was ordered to disband and in response, the men of the 21st mutinied on 25 September 1918. By the end of that day, the order was withdrawn, and the battalion fought its last battle at Montbrehain on 5 October. The following day it became the last Australian battalion to withdraw from active operations on the Western Front, and..... The 38th Battalion - After training in both Australia and Britain, the 38th Battalion crossed to France in late November 1916. In February 1917 the 38th Battalion provided 400 troops, with a similar party from the 37th Battalion, to form a special raiding "battalion". The 38th fought in its first major battle at Messines, in Belgium, between 7-9 June 1917. It fought in another two major attacks in this sector - the battle of Broodseinde on 4 October, and the battle of Passchendaele on 12 October. It was the 38th's most costly operation of the war, resulting in 62 per cent casualties. The 38th participated in its last major action of the war between 29 September and 2 October 1918 as part of the Australian-American operation that breached the formidable defences of the Hindenburg Line along the St Quentin Canal. It was disbanded in April 1919. 39 Battalion AIF 1916-19 The 39th Battalion was formed on 21 February 1916 at the Ballarat Showgrounds in Victoria and drew most of its recruits from the state’s Western District. The 39th fought in its first major battle at Messines, in Belgium, between 7-9 June 1917. The 39th fought in another two major attacks in this sector - the carefully planned and executed battle of Broodseinde on 4 October, and the disastrous battle of Passchendaele on 12 October. When the German Army launched its last great offensive in the spring of 1918, the battalion was rushed south to France and played a role in turning the German drive aimed at the vital railway junction of Amiens. The 39th participated in its last major action of the war between 29 September and 2 October 1918 as part of the Australian-American operation that breached the formidable defences of the Hindenburg Line along the St Quentin Canal. The Forty-First - Being a Record of the 41st Battalion AIF During the Great War 1914-18 The 41st Battalion was raised in February 1916 with recruits from Brisbane, northern Queensland and the northern rivers district of New South Wales. When the German Army launched its last great offensive in March 1918, the battalion was rushed south to France and played a role in blunting the drive towards the vital railway junction of Amiens. The Allies launched their own offensive on 8 August 1918, and the 41st played an active role both in the initial attack and the long advance that followed throughout August and into September. The 41st participated in its last major action of the war between 29 September and 2 October 1918 as part of the Australian-American operation that breached the formidable defences of the Hindenburg Line along the StQuentin Canal.
The Spirit of the Forty-Second - 42nd Battalian AIF The 42nd Battalion was raised at Enoggera, on the outskirts of Brisbane, in December 1915 and became part of the 11th Brigade of the 3rd Australian Division. The battalion became known as the "Australian Black Watch". This association was recognised with a bagpipe band. After training in Australia and Britain, the 42nd deployed to France on 26 November 1916 and in 1917, the operations of the 3rd Division were focussed on the Ypres sector of Belgium. The 42nd participated in major battles at Messines on 7 June, Warneton on 31 July, Broodseinde on 4 October, and Passchendaele on 12 October. On 20 September 1918 the 42nd was ordered to disband to provide reinforcements for other battalions. Its men mutinied winning the Battalion a temporary reprieve. On 2 October the order to disband was once again issued. The men still disobeyed, but pressure from the AIF hierarchy eventually forced compliance. The 42nd Battalion was disbanded on 22 October1918.

Returning to its mounted role, the 11th Light Horse joined the forces defending the Suez Canal. It joined its first major battle when it attacked Gaza. The 11th Light Horse participated in the pursuit that followed, and moved into the Jordan Valley in time to participate inthe Es Salt raid.
ANZAC: The History of the Fourteenth Battalion AIF Principally from Melbourne and its suburbs the 14th Bn landed at ANZAC Cove on the afternoon of 25 April 1915. On 19 May the Turks launched a massive counter-attack. During this fighting Lance Corporal Albert Jacka of the 14th was awarded the AIF's first Victoria Cross. The battalion served at ANZAC until the evacuation in December. In June 1916 they sailed for France and the Western Front. From then until 1918, the battalion took part in bloody trench warfare. In March and April 1918, the battalion helped stop the German spring offensive. It subsequently participated in the great allied offensive of 1918, fighting near Amiens on 8 August 1918. This advance by British and empire troops was the greatest success in a single day on the Western Front, one that German General Erich Ludendorff described as "..the black day of the German Army in this war...". Story of Dunsterforce - Stalky's Forlorn Hope The amazing story of the intervention in Persia/Iraq/and the trans-Caucasia to try to prevent German and Turkish troops capturing Baku and entering Persia after the collapse of Russia to the Bolsheviks in 1918. A campaign that rings down through the years to today where the conflict between the Kurds, Armenians, Arabs, Iranians, Turks etc still rages. ANZAC: Adventures in the Near East - by LtCol Rawlinson More on Dunsterforce, an extraordinary tale of adventure in the WW1 sideshow of the Middle East (Mesopotamia, Trans-Caucasia, Persia, Armenia, Turkey etc. His book tells the story of his adventures in the Near East in a singularly attractive form; his account of capturing a Bolshevik ship and piloting her out of Baku Harbour under very difficult circumstances will astonish many sailors. There is, however, a very sad side to his story, which, I am afraid, will very much distress many men and women of this country. Colonel Rawlinson put his uniform on in 1914, and did not take if off until March, 1923. He was cast into a Turkish prison for twenty months, and all but starved todeath.
ANZAC: Anzac Book
The Book of Anzac was written in the trenches of Anzac at Gallipoli late in 1915. Nearly every word was written and every line under fire. Day and night, during the whole process of its composition~ the crack of the Mauser bullets overhead never ceased. At least one good soldier that we know of, who was preparing a contribution for these pages, met his death while the work was still unfinished. The ANZAC Book was to have been a New Year Magazine to help this little British Australasian fraternity in Turkey to while away the long winter in the trenches. This ebook includes, in addition to the ANZAC Book, a detailed description of the Gallipoli Campaign, reports and despatches related to the campaign, with extra photographs and maps. Twelve Months with the Australian Expeditionary Force by “AnANZAC”
TWELVE MONTHS WITH THE AUSTRALIAN EXPEDITIONARY FORCE BY "AN ANZAC" From the preface: "My main reason for writing this book is that the greatest attack that was made on the Peninsula has never been personally described by a combatant, viz., the attack on Achi Baba on May 8th; we were too far ahead for any reporter to get up to our lines. In my notes you will read about Suvla Bay and " Lone Pine," but, believe me, they were "birthdays" compared with the attack on Achi Baba. Some people will tell you that the Gallipoli campaign has been a failure. These people think that to be successful in a war you have to take huge tracts of land or thou- sands of prisoners and large quantities of munitions. They are wrong. We knew that we had been successful, and I will tell you the reason why we claim to have been successful. We have kept an army of Turks numbering more than two hundred and fifty thousand occupied on the Peninsula, and have kept them from fighting on other frontiers. The Germans said, if we waited till 1920 we would never land there. We landed in five minutes". Gallipoli: The Defense of Gallipoli - A General Staff Study - by LtCol George Patton

Illustrated. At dawn on the 9th of August, 1915, the 6th Battalion of the East Yorkshire Regiment received an order to attack the great hill that towers above Anafarta. The order was late, hours too late, for the messenger had lost his way; so, although we did not know it at the time, we had already forfeited our chance, and were launched upon a forlorn endeavour. About thirty of us reached the top of the hill, perhaps afew more

YPRES AND THE BATTLES OF YPRES – MICHELIN ILLUSTRATED GUIDES TO THE BATTLEFIELDS (1914—1918) YPRES AND THE BATTLES OF YPRES ITINERARY: LILLE—ARMENTIÈRES—MESSINES—POELCAPPELLE—YPRES—POPERINGHE—LES MONTS—BAILLEUL—BÉTHUNE—LILLE. The Yser and the Belgian Coast – Michelin Battlefield Guide In September 1914, after the Battle of the Marne and the German retreat, the centre and right of the French Armies quickly became fixed in front of the lines which the enemy had prepared in the rear, and were then fortifying. While the Allies' right, abutting on the Swiss frontier, was protected against any turning movement on the part of the enemy, their left (the 6th Army) was exposed. The French 6th Army (General Maunoury) held the right bank of the Oise, north of Compiègne (See map p. 3). The Germans attacked it in force and attempted their favourite turning movement. General Joffre parried the manœuvre, and while strengthening the 6th Army, formed a mobile corps on his left wing, strong enough to withstand the enemy's outflanking movement. The 2nd Army, consisting of corps brought up from the east, was formed and placed under the command of General de Castelnau. Preceded and protected by divisions of cavalry, it gradually extended its front to the south of Arras. The Germans carried out a similar movement, and the opposing armies, in their attempt to outflank each other, gradually prolonged their front northwards and approached the sea. Against the German right wing, which steadily extended itself northwards, General de Maud'huy's Army deployed from the Somme to La Bassée, and gave battle in front of Arras. The Germans attacked furiously and attempted both to crush the Allied front and continue their turning movement. Six Army Corps and two Cavalry Corps were thrown against General de Maud'huy's Army but the latter, reinforced, held its ground. The command of the Northern Army Group was entrusted to General Foch. This Guide was produced immediately after the war for families to visit the battlefields where their men fought and died. The Daredevil Of The Army; Experiences As A “Buzzer” AndDespatch Rider

An indictment of England and her responsibility in the conquest of Abyssinia (of which she knew in advance and to which she actually gave assent) and of the French progress in the Spanish Civil War (which she has aided by taking the position of non-intervention, and ignoring the active part taken by Germany and Italy and making impossible support of the existing government). Step by step, her involvement is traced, as the story of Mussolini's ambitions and achievements is unrolled. The author, who was the Manchester Guardian correspondent during the Abyssinian war and spent most of last year in Spain, thinks Mussolini more dangerous than most Englishmen believe. “In every country bordering on the Mediterranean,” he says, “people are asking: why don’t the English take Mussolini’s ambitions more seriously?” Click below to order and download the pdf ebook (27mb). The genre first became recognizable starting in Britain in 1871 with the short story The Battle of Dorking, a fictional account of an invasion of England by Germany. The Battle of Dorking was so popular it started a literary craze for stories that aroused imaginations and anxieties about hypothetical invasions by foreign powers, and by 1914 the genre had amassed a corpus of over 400 books, many best-sellers, and a world-wide audience. The genre was extremely influential in Britain in shaping politics, national policies and popular perceptions in the years leading up to the First World War, and still remains a part of popular culture to this day. THE GREAT GAME - THE STORY OF ANGLO-RUSSIAN RIVALRY OVER CENTRALASIA
History of the Afghans - J P Ferrier 1858 History of the War in Afghanistan - 1841-42 Afghan Wars Afghanistan: A Short Account of Afghanistan, its History, and Our Dealings With It Among The Wild Tribes Of The AfghanFrontier
The Great Game is a British term for what the British saw as a strategic rivalry and conflict between the British Empire and the Russian Empire for supremacy in Central Asia. The classic Great Game period is generally regarded as running approximately from the Russo-Persian Treaty of 1813 to the Anglo-Russian Convention of 1907. At the start of the 19th century there were some 2000 miles separating British India and the outlying regions of Tsarist Russia. Much of the land in between was unmapped. The cities of Bukhara, Khiva, Merv, Kokand and Tashkent were virtually unknown to outsiders. As Imperial Russian expansion threatened to collide with the increasing British dominance of the occupied lands of the Indian sub-continent, the two great empires played out a subtle game of exploration, espionage and imperialistic diplomacy throughout Central Asia. The conflict always threatened, but never quite developed into direct warfare between the two sides. The centre of activity was Afghanistan. The stories of epic travel, espionage, tribal war and political intrigue make for fascinating reading and resound down to us to even this day.MOTORCYCLES

In Morocco
In Morocco: by Edith Wharton. 1920. Morocco is too curious, too beautiful, too rich in landscape and architecture, and above all too much of a novelty, not to attract one of the main streams of spring travel as soon as Mediterranean passenger traffic is resumed. Now that the war is over, only a few months' work on roads and railways divide it from the great torrent of "tourism"; and once that deluge is let loose, no eye will ever again see Moulay Idriss and Fez and Marrakech as I saw them. Wharton was a committed supporter of French imperialism, describing herself as a "rabid imperialist", and the war solidified her political conservatism. After World War I, she travelled to Morocco as the guest of the resident general, Gen. Hubert Lyautey and wrote a book In Morocco, about her experiences. Wharton's writing on her Moroccan travels is full of praise for the French administration and for Lyautey and his wife in particular. Download now in PDF eBook format. INDIA AND ASIA
Wallace - The Malay Archipelago The land of the Orangutan and the Bird of Paradise - A Narrative of Travel with studies of Man and Nature by Alfred Russel Wallace - 1898 Wallace chose the Indonesian Archipelago for detailed study, travelling to what was referred to in those days as "the Malay Archipelago." He arrived in Singapore on 20 April 1854, to begin what would turn out to be the defining period of his life. Wallace's name is now inextricably linked with his travels in the Indonesian region. He spent nearly eight full years there; during that period he undertook about seventy different expeditions resulting in a combined total of around 14,000 miles of travel. He visited every important island in the archipelago at least once, and several on multiple occasions. His collecting efforts produced the astonishing total of 125,660 specimens, including more than a thousand species new to science. The volume he later wrote describing his work and experiences there, The Malay Archipelago, is the most celebrated of all writings on Indonesia, and ranks with a small handful of other works as one of the nineteenth century's best scientific travel books. Highlights of his adventures there include his study and capture of birds-of-paradise and orangutans, his many dealings with native peoples, and his residence on New Guinea (he was one of the very first Europeans to live there for any extended period). Printed 1908 _with illustrations._ "The duties of the Corps of Guides were clearly and concisely defined..... It was to contain trustworthy men, who could, at a moment's notice, act as guides to troops in the field; men capable, too, of collecting trustworthy intelligence beyond, as well as within, our borders; and, in addition to all this, men, ready to give and take hard blows, whether on the frontier or in a wider field. And finally, they were to be a new feature in the fighting forces of the Empire".
