Albion fire spread to 2 neighboring houses By Tom Rivers, Editor Posted 5 December 2020 at 9:01 pm 1 PERSON TAKEN TO STRONG MEMORIAL _Photos by Tom Rivers_ ALBION – Albion firefighters arrive on scene soon after being dispatched to a fire at 221 West State St. The fire caused extensive damage to the house on the left and also spread to the attic of the yellow house next door. Shelby firefighters are up high in their ladder truck to attack the roof where the attic was on fire and full of smoke at a house on EastAcademy Street.
The neighboring structure and its garage were first on fire and it spread to two other houses, one on East Academy and the other on WestState Street.
Firefighters were called to the scene at about 4:30 after a loud explosion and reports of a structure fire. There were two more explosions when Albion firefighters arrived on scene, said Albion Fire Department Lt. John Papponetti. One person at the house was taken by ambulance to Strong Memorial Hospital where a friend said he suffered from smoke inhalation and a perforated eardrum. His name hasn’t been released. The fire was at the corner of West State and East Academy streets. It drew a big crowd of onlookers, many standing next to the former grammar school across the street. Firefighters believe the fire started in the garage and quickly spread. Fire investigators from the county and state are on scene, trying to determine the cause. The house at the corner of East Academy and West State Street looks like a total loss. The house next door on West State Street suffered damage in the attic and on the side of the house. The neighbor’s house on East Academy also appeared to suffer significant damage. That house is owned by Bob Maxwell. His friends said he has done extensive renovations to the house in recent years. Papponetti said battling three fires at once proved a challenge for firefighters, especially with the houses so close together. A GoFundMe has been established for the victims of the fire. Clickhere

Undersheriff injured in accident on 31 in Albion By Tom Rivers, Editor Posted 5 December 2020 at 3:52 pm _Photo by Tom Rivers_ ALBION – Orleans County Undersheriff Mike Mele was injured and taken by ambulance to Strong Memorial Hospital today after he swerved to avoid a head-on collision and struck a house on Route 31.Undersheriff Mele
Mele was driving westbound in a Chevy Tahoe at about 11:15 a.m. when another driver crossed into his lane. The roads were slippery with slush at the time, a state trooper said. “The Undersheriff took evasive action, turning hard to the right to avoid a direct head-on collision,” said Sheriff Chris Bourke. “The out-of-control vehicle reportedly struck the Undersheriff’s vehicle as it left the north shoulder of the highway. The Undersheriff’s vehicle continued through a lawn and struck a house.” Mele is being treated for a head and leg injury at Strong. The other driver wasn’t injured, the sheriff said. He credited Mele for likely saving the other driver from serious injuries and possibly death by avoiding the head-on crash. Mele was out assisting the Public Health Department on quarantine and isolation checks. Bourke said several people have refused to cooperate with public health officials on compliance when they may have been exposed to Covid-19 or when they have tested positive. The accident is being investigated by the State Police and the Orleans County Sheriff’s Office. “We at the Sheriff’s Office are thankful for the quick response of the Albion Fire Department, COVA Ambulance, Sheriff’s Deputies, Emergency Management and the State Police,” Bourke said. Historic Childs: Electricity comes to the hamlet in Gaines (Part 4) Photos courtesy of Cobblestone Museum: The Ward House, left, is a cobblestone home on Ridge Road next to the Cobblestone Universalist Church. The Vagg House is at the southwest corner of the intersection of Route 98 and Ridge Road. Posted 5 December 2020 at 1:26 pm BY DOUG FARLEY, COBBLESTONE MUSEUM DIRECTOR CHILDS – The Hamlet of Childs is fortunate to have two homes from two very different time periods that are open for public tours in season. The Ward House (left) showcases life in the Victorian Period, before the advent of electricity, and the Vagg House (right) depicts the arrival of the electric age from the 1920s-1940s. The differences in these two homes are striking. This is the fourth article about electricity coming to the Hamlet and the changes that took place. Today we take a closer look at labor saving devices usually found in the kitchen. If the Victorian homemaker wanted to serve her family pancakes or waffles for breakfast, she would first mix up pancake batter using a hand mixer. It was a simple mechanical device that when hand cranked, would spin its metal mixing blades to beat the lumps out ofthe pancake batter.
The next step would be to heat up a waffle iron or pancake griddle on the wood stove in the kitchen. In the photo above the implement on the right is a pancake maker. The liquid batter was poured into the attached receptacle cups. Then the hot metal plate could be folded over the batter to cook both sides of the pancake at the same time. This was actually a step up from simple “flapjacks” that required flipping the pancake from side to side. In the photo above we see how time marched on in the kitchen. In the Vagg House, the electric household would most likely use an electric mixer to beat their pancake batter saving time and human energy. The mixer shown here is a Hamilton Beach Model C with Juicer attachment atthe top.
This appliance was first made in 1910 and became fairly common around World War II. So common, in fact, that the original owner sold the Hamilton Beach Company and moved to Millionaire’s Row in Miami Beach after just a few decades in business. Hamilton Beach Brands was originally located in Racine, Wisconsin. The company is still doing business today, but all of their appliances are now made in China. Once the batter was prepared in the electric mixer, the homemaker would probably use an electric waffle iron or pancake cooker to complete the process. If all you wanted was toasted bread, the process in the 19th century involved heating bread on your wood stove or in front of an open hearth fireplace. Of course, the process at the 20th century Vagg House used an electric toaster. Over the years, many different types of electric toasters have evolved to improve upon toasted bread. The appliance on the left made one slice of toast at a time while the unit at the right prepared twoslices.
If you wanted to enjoy eggs with your toast at the Vagg House, you might have used either of these two electric egg steamers from themid-1900s.
Making coffee over the years has evolved, too. In the Ward House, making coffee involved heating water in a teapot or kettle on the woodstove.
A wide variety of coffee appliances were present in the all-electric home like the Vagg House. The appliance on the left is called a Drip-O-Lator. The coffee maker in the center has a spigot to fill coffee cups, and the ceramic pot on the right is a percolator. In the 1900s, electricity was even considered appropriate for children’s toys. The child’s oven shown above is probably a precursor of today’s Easy Bake Oven. This “toy” was plugged into an actual live electrical circuit which provided 120 volts of power to heat up an electric coil inside the mini-oven which got hot enough to cook food. Let’s hope there was some parental involvement, too!
With the vast number of electrical appliances in the Vagg House, finding an open electrical outlet in 1940 must have posed a problem. So, another electrical gadget was created to solve the dilemma. This ceramic device provided outlets for three other electric appliances. Our next installment about Historic Childs will take us back to look at horse and buggy days in the Hamlet.Return to top
Driver avoids head-on collision but hits house on 31 in Albion By Tom Rivers, Editor Posted 5 December 2020 at 12:17 pm _Photos by Tom Rivers_ ALBION – A driver of a Chevrolet Tahoe hit a house today on Route 31 after avoiding a head-on collision, a state trooper said. Another vehicle entered into the westbound lane due to slushy roads at about 11:15 a.m. The driver of Tahoe swerved and left the road. It went across the lawn on the northside of the road, just west of where 31 intersects with Tuthill and Densmore roads, and hit the house. The driver had a head injury and complained of pain in a leg. The driver was taken by COVA ambulance to a nearby hospital. The homeowner was inside the house when the residence was struck by the vehicle. The homeowner wasn’t injured, the state trooper said. The structure appeared to shift due to the impact. Dan Strong, Albion code enforcement officer, was on scene to inspect the house. Albion firefighters, Orleans County Sheriff’s deputies, Orleans County Emergency Management and the state Department of Environmental Conservation also responded to the scene. UPDATE at 3:56 p.m.: Undersheriff Mike Mele was the driver of the vehicle that struck the house. He is being treated at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester for head and leg injuries.Return to top

N-O getting set for a “virtual” swim season By Mike Wertman, Sports Writer Posted 5 December 2020 at 8:48 am In this very uncertain Pandemic year of 2020 remote learning, zoom meetings and virtual events have become the norm, changes which certainly has affected sports at all levels. Locally, the Niagara-Orleans League is preparing for what will be a most unusual season of “virtual” boys and girls swim meets. The “virtual” meets, which would match Albion vs. Medina for example, will have each team swimming the events at its own pool. The times of the teams would then be compared by a computer program to determine the winner of each event and the overall winning team. “It’s not ideal but it gives the kids an opportunity to do something and right now there is not a lot that they can do,” said Medina Athletic Director Eric Valley. Practice sessions for the season are scheduled to begin on December 14 with the first of the virtual meets being slated for December 22 with Newfane vs. Albion, Medina vs. Roy-Hart and Barker vs. Akron. The meets are slated to be held without spectators. The first meets had been scheduled for December 10 but when the start of practices were moved back from November 30 to December 14 the first three meets (Dec. 10, 12 and 17) had to be rescheduled and are now slated for three Saturdays in January. Practices for the winter season’s “High Risk” sports of basketball land wrestling are scheduled to begin on January 4 as of now. However, an update on the status of those sports is expected to be released by the New York State Public High School Athletic Association by December 21.Return to top
Covid cases surged locally in November, topping total previous 8months
By Tom Rivers, Editor Posted 4 December 2020 at 10:37 pm ORLEANS, GENESEE AND WYOMING HAD MORE THAN 1,000 CASES COMBINED LASTMONTH
This graph from the health departments in Genesee, Orleans and Wyoming counties shows how the cases have surged in the past month. Click here to see a detailed chart on cases in the three counties. The number of Covid cases in the three local rural counties of Orleans, Genesee and Wyoming counties soared in November, with the combined total of 1,133 new cases topping that the first eight months of the Covid-19 pandemic. The three counties, from March through October, had 975 Covid cases combined. At the end of November, the combined cases was at 2,108. Orleans had been the most hard hit by Covid through October, driven by an outbreak in the spring at two nursing homes, which combined had 147 cases by late June. In Late October, Orleans had the most of the three counties with 399 cases, followed by 375 in Genesee and 201 inWyoming.
But the cases have really taken off in Genesee in November and so far in December. Genesee reported 575 new cases in November, with 132 more the first four days of December. Wyoming also has more in November than in the previous eight months, with 330 new cases in November, compared to the 201. Orleans didn’t see as much of an increase as Genesee and Wyoming last month, but the 224 new cases is still the most in a month for Orleans. Although the cases are on the rise in Orleans, the severity isn’t as bad as in the spring and early summer, when the county suffered 55 deaths from Covid, including 54 in nursing homes. Orleans has now had 58 residents die from Covid through the first nine months of the pandemic, by far more than Genesee and Wyoming. Wyoming has suffered eight deaths while Genesee was at seven the end of November, but has added five more so far in December. Six of the previous positive individuals have recovered and been removed from the isolation list. Orleans also is reporting that eight residents are hospitalized from Covid, up from six on Thursday. • ALBION CENTRAL SCHOOL officials were notified today that a staff member in the elementary school has tested positive for Covid-19. That student hasn’t been in the school building in more than three weeks. An elementary student also tested positive who was last in the school building on Nov. 30. “Everyone who will be placed on quarantine due to school contacts has been notified, although the Department of Health may reach out to others if they determine that any potential exposure has occurred outside of the school,” Mark Kruzynski, the district superintendent, wrote in a letter to the community today. There are currently 370 active cases in the three counties with 183 in Genesee, 77 in Orleans and 110 in Wyoming. • STATEWIDE DATA: Of the 208,297 tests reported yesterday, 11,271 were positive (5.41% of total). That compares to 9,855 positive tests on Wednesday (4.84% of total). A week ago, the state reported 8,176 positive tests or 3.72% of the total. “Our largest two problems right now are the 70 percent spread in households and small gatherings, aggregated by the holiday season, and lack of compliance with restrictions,” Gov. Andrew Cuomo said. “It’s driven by social fatigue, social resentment, social noncompliance and lack of government enforcement. If people don’t follow the restrictions, you’re going to see an increase. Cuomo today reported the total hospitalizations from Covid are at 4,222, compared to 4,063 the previous day and 3,103 a week ago. Cuomo today also announced that 20 million Covid-19 test results have been reported to New York State since the pandemic began. “There are capacity and protocol restrictions in bars, restaurants and gyms,” Cuomo said. “The lack of compliance is a problem and I need the local governments to enforce those restrictions. I understand Covid fatigue and that people are resentful of these regulations, but if you don’t enforce the restrictions, and if the restrictions are violated, then they’re pointless. They have to be enforced. New York State has one of the nation’s lowest infection rates and the vaccine—the weapon that ends the war—is on the way. The question is how long it will take.” • RAPID TESTING: Genesee County will be hosting 2 rapid testing clinics on Dec. 8 and Dec. 10 from 1 to 4 p.m. The focus is for asymptomatic individuals and is free. 5 Medina firefighters on quarantine after testing positive for Covid By Tom Rivers, Editor Posted 4 December 2020 at 2:47 pm MEDINA – Five of the career firefighters in the Medina Fire Department are on quarantine until Dec. 12 after testing positive forCovid-19.
That still leaves Medina with 16 firefighters to respond to EMS and fire calls, enough to handle all of the shifts until the department is back at full strength, said Lt. Steve Cooley. One of the firefighters lost his sense of smell, which has been a leading indicator if someone has Covid. That prompted the department to be tested on Wednesday. Of the 21 Medina firefighters tested for Covid, five results came back positive. Four of the firefighters have symptoms. The five who tested positive hadn’t been in contact with the public doing their official duties the previous 48 hours of testing positive, Cooley said. The fire department feels fortunate to have made it this far without any confirmed cases among the staff, given their frequent responses to assist people with illnesses. “We made it 8 full months,” Cooley said. “It’ a miracle we made it this far with the amount of interactions with have the publicwho have it.”
The Medina firefighters have been responding to more calls of people suffering from Covid, including several with severe symptoms. “We’re seeing an increase in the community in the numbers,” Cooley said. “Our thoughts are with those families.” The department has been doing temperature checks for firefighters when they report to work since March, and requiring them to stay home if they have any symptoms. The Medina FD also will be increasing its cleaning and disinfection procedures with ambulances and equipment. “We would like to thank all our partners in public safety and all those that have reached out to us offering assistance,” Cooley said.Return to top

Governor directs flags to be lowered Monday for Pearl Harboranniversary
Posted 4 December 2020 at 1:18 pm _Press Release, Gov. Andrew Cuomo_ Governor Andrew M. Cuomo directed that flags on state government buildings be flown at half-staff on Monday, December 7, in observation of the anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor. During the attack, more than 2,400 Americans were killed, including 40 New Yorkers. “Seventy-nine years ago, more than 2,400 brave souls were tragically lost during the attack on Pearl Harbor,” Cuomo said. “We must never forget that day and how it forever altered our nation’s history. New Yorkers are eternally grateful to the men and women of our Armed Forces who have committed their lives to defending our nation, and as we thank them for all they do to keep us safe, we must also honor the sacrifice of those we have lost by upholding the ideals our nation was founded upon. “While this date continues to live in infamy, it should also remind us how a galvanized nation can come together as one to fight to protect our democracy. During these times of crisis, division and adversity, let us reflect on how much we can overcome when we are united, and work together to help forge a better future for allAmericans.”
