Their ability to make and use tools and pass on these skills to other individuals has become a fascinating area of research, within both captive and wild populations. However, ENVIRONMENTAL ENRICHMENT: NATURAL FEEDING BEHAVIORS When I asked Ibu Maryanti what her main goal for enriching the orangutans is, she responded, “I want them in their hearts to feel like they are in the forest.” Ibu Maryanti is the coordinator of environmental enrichment for the 330 orphan orangutans living at OFI’s Orangutan Care Center and Quarantine. It is a creative laboratory filled with padlocks, keys, nails, screws, drill heads, and hand and electric saws, to oversized balls of string and yards upon yards of rope.
