ANIMAL CONSERVATION ACTIVITIES Orana’s herd has some of the most valuable genetics in Australasia. Southern White Rhinoceros, another notoriously fickle species to breed in captivity are also bred at Orana. We are a key partner in a global conservation effort to prevent white rhino from going extinct. In 2018, Orana was the first NZ zoo to join the addax programme. Tragically, human population pressure and poorly controlled commercial exploitation have led to the extinction of many African animals and many others are. still coming under increasing threat. It ranges from the high mountains of the Himalayas and the deserts of Mongolia to the lush rainforests of Borneo. As development continues to threaten, worldwide conservation programmes become more and more important.
