Hello drpark111, At temps in the high 80's on non overcast days, the Transitions 1.50 Gray will darken to at least 20 to 25% Transmission. (75 to 80% tint depending on time of day, brightness of the sun). Between 11 and 2 are the brightest time of day, and UV is at its peak. Sometimes perception is the lens is not that dark.MY VARILUX X REVIEW
I got myself a pair of Varilux X lenses a couple of days ago and thought I should write a review of them. I am about a -.75 and a -.1.50 with around a diopter of astigmatism and a +2.50 add. I can easily wear most progressives, there have been just a few I found inferior. My first impression of the Varilux X was positive. It’s certainly as good as any progressive I have ever worn and I haveZEISS VS VARILUX

The Natural was made for a higher seg ht. The Natural is the sister lens to the comfort, and the ovation is the sister lens to the panamic. I wear large and small frames depending on what I am doing. The natural has a slower progression and I think 22 is probably the lowest I would go before switching to an ovation. WHY DO LENSES CRAZE? Temperature will cause the lens coating to expand and contract. If the hard coat on the lens is uneven (as is often the case with back-side spin coating), it will expand unevenly. The uneven expansion under the AR stresses the AR coating, and causes it to crack/craze. This is why 'high end' AR coatings use a dip coat. DIFFERENCES IN EDGE POLISH TREATMENTS 507. Well, polishing is a double edged blade. It looks really nice, like jewelry. It also has a highly reflective surface. With higher minus Rx's that surface gets bigger and bigger. It can really bother some people when light hits it. Even with an AR coat, that negates thepurpose.

OVATION VS. NATURAL
DIFFERENCES IN EDGE POLISH TREATMENTS 507. MY VARILUX X REVIEW
It’s certainly as good as any progressive I have ever worn and I have NIKON I VERSUS OTHER PROGRESSIVE LENSES I have worn Essilor's Comfort progressives for a number of years. This year I thought I'd like to try a smaller frame and "short corridor" progressives were suggested. I should mention that I do a lot of computer work and do not like moving my head a lot to read either on screen or paper. My new RX read: OD sph: -8.50 cyl: +050 axis: 43 add: +255 OS sph: -8.50 cyl: +100 axis: 163 add:+225. VARIABLE CORRIDOR PROGRESSIVES For the Variable, the corridor length changes and the reading area remains fixed. On the Fixed it is the opposite, the corridor length remains the same, and the reading size changes. In your example above, it actually doesn't matter since there is a Fixed 18 corridor lens. Both will have a corridor length of 13mm with a reading corridor of5mm.
