HOW TO DEAL WITH EXPOSED TREE ROOTS IN One thing that older houses have that newer ones typically don't are large, established trees. In many cases though, the roots of these trees eventually become exposed, creating bare spots and tripping hazards on your lawn. Fortunately there are a couple of relatively easy solutions to this problem. RESETTING A TOILET WHEN YOU CHANGE YOUR FLOORING The next step is putting on a closet flange. One end fits over the soil pipe and is glued in place, assuming your house is plumbed with PVC. The other end of the flange is a metal or plastic collar that sits on top of the finished floor. The flange is secured to the floor with stainless steel screws long RELOCATING CAST IRON RADIATORS To move a radiator, the plumber drained hot water in the lines, cut the steel pipe running to and from the radiator and muscled the radiator out of the way. You may need help with that part -- they're very heavy. Later, the radiator was moved back in place, the hot-water lines reconnected and the heating system brought back on line. WET BASEMENT OF AN OLD HOUSE Improper grading. The soil near the foundation should slope away from the house. Current standards require that the ground should slope down at least 6 inches within 10 feet of the foundation. Many homes with basement water issues have been corrected by simply adding soil around the perimeter and grading it to shed the water away. FENCES: STAPLES OR NAILS? Re: Fences: staples or nails? Staples are much quicker than nails, although if you blunt the tip of the nial with your hammer before putting it in it will be much less likely to split the wood. If you look at a nail and compare its thickness to that of a staple, you will see that there is much more material there. INSPECTOR ADVICE FOR OLD HOMES In most older homes there is usually at least one major system in need of updating. Keep in mind, most mechanical systems have been added to an old home and were not considered when it was originally constructed. Knob and tube wiring. Electrical.
