POETRY FOR HUMANS AGAINST THE VIRUS by Source on April 10, 2020 · 0

Reaching for poetry and other art forms are what some humans are doing in these days of the pandemic. Here’s a collection of poems written by the “Gypsy Poets”, a group of women who have expressed their thoughts for the times. The poems were sent to the _OB Rag_ by Karen Kenyon, who organized the group. She told us: _I am attaching poems written about this unusual time here on earth — describing fear and hope and_ _reflection. Our members consist of one woman from England and Ireland, another who is a retired_ _school counselor, a convention planner, and an employee of The

Athenaeum….._

Certain members of the San Diego City Council are coming under criticism for actions they took on Tuesday, April 7. While the public was not attending the Council meeting due to coronavirus restrictions, a council majority passed a resolution about Measure “C” – the Convention Center expansion measure on March’s Primary ballot that did not pass because it did not reach the required two-thirds endorsement by San Diego voters. The resolution passed by the Council majority on Tuesday came after they removed specific language in the original proposed resolution that stated Measure “C” had been defeated. Here’s the language

that was removed:

“Measure C did not receive the affirmative vote of at least two-thirds of the qualified voters voting on the measure and is hereby declared to have been defeated.”

Wow, what a trip this coronavirus thing has been. I mean one moment you’re going about your day, maybe checking out a movie or two, dining with friends, getting a round of golf in… Then the next day you’re living under a mandate where you’re to cover your mouth and stay in your house and if you do go out into the streets don’t come near to anybody. It’s like you’re in a dark tunnel wondering if you’ll ever see the light of day again. There’s something _déjà vu_ about it for me as I’ve had feelings like I’m feeling now before. Nothing, of course, on the level of dealing with a pandemic disease, but an experience, never-the-less, of having my life changed, seemingly out of the blue. In a moment in time when my life was hunky-dory fine. I had an amazing life at home with a beautiful wife and three wonderful creative kids. I made a living making learning fun for a school full of kids. And I was thinking of keeping on doing what I was doing for at least five or six more years. But those plans came to a crashing end one day.

The headline says it all. It’s Thursday, April 9 and your _OB Rag_ has nothing to publish. Our raft of writers and bloggers and photographers and poets are all at home trying to get through this crisis like the rest of us are. But they haven’t sent Editordude anything to post this day. Yesterday, in contrast, we posted a number of stories and we had several thousand visitors. But not today. So, we ask our readers: What’s new? Do you have a story or photo or observation or poem about our new reality you’d like to share with the thousands of readers who come onto our website and facebook page every day?

Warning: this is a long post that addresses many questions and conversations I have had over the past week on topics that are very important to many right

now.

We are all experiencing and adapting to unprecedented times right now. My week was made even crazier by being re-taught the meaning of “out of context”. For those who read it, the LA Times article with subsequent twists made by additional media outlets was a major disappointment — and caused some people extra angst which is not

needed right now.

For the record, the story was supposed to focus on the fact that aerosols can go further than 6 ft especially if you are on a crowded beach which was continuing to happen in our area. This realization of aerosol transport came out in several articles over a 2 day period (see bottom of post). Read the full article →

QUEEN ELIZABETH’S MODEL OF LEADERSHIP AMID CORONAVIRUS CONTRASTS SHARPLY WITH TRUMP’S April 8, 2020 by Source _BY COLLEEN O’CONNOR __/ Times of San Diego

/ April 8, 2020_

The British went to bed proud on Sunday night. We Americans woke up sad, again, on Monday. Why? Because of the stark, contrasting coronavirus appearances, over the weekend, by President Trump and Queen Elizabeth II. Trump in his repetitive daily briefing; Elizabeth in a rare public address. One was full of blame, accusations, impatience, falsehoods and bravado. The other was full of gratitude, praise and encouragement. The Queen’s address was broadcast just hours before Prime Minister Boris Johnson was hospitalized with COVID-19 and less than a week after her son, the Prince of Wales, finished quarantine following his own coronavirus diagnosis. TRUMP HAS FINANCIAL INTEREST IN HYDROXYCHLOROQUINE MANUFACTURER April 7, 2020 by Source President Donald Trump has a “small financial interest” in the maker of an anti-malarial drug that he has been touting as a “game changer” in treating coronavirus, according to _The New York Times_. Over the past two weeks, Trump and his Fox News allies have aggressively promoted hydroxychloroquine as a potential cure, despite top infectious-disease expert Dr. Anthony Fauci and others urging caution and noting that there was not enough evidence of the drug’s

efficacy.

The Times reports the president’s family trusts all have investments in a mutual fund whose largest holding is Sanofi, the manufacturer of Plaquenil, the brand-name version of hydroxychloroquine. Associates of the president, including Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross, have also run funds that hold investments in the pharmaceutical firm. Read the full article →

SAN DIEGO COVID-19 CASES BY ZIP CODE April 7, 2020 by Source The _OB Rag_, with Kevin Hastings’ creations, was the only site running COVID-19 cases in San Diego by ZIP code for a couple of days.

Then _KPBS_

jumped in – thankfully somebody with more resources – and decided to post a more inter-active breakdown of coronavirus cases by

neighborhood.

Here’s what_ KPBS_ reporter, Christopher Underwood, had to say

yesterday, April 6:

San Diego County Health and Human Services recently began providing data breaking down confirmed COVID-19 cases by ZIP code. KPBS has mapped out those cases across the county using their data, which gets updated daily. The data represents the residence of the person who was infected, not the site of transmission. County health officials have frequently stressed that they don’t want the public to read too much into the data because the numbers only represent a portion of actual COVID-19

cases.

Kim Prather, a leading atmospheric chemist at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, wants to yell out her window at every surfer, runner, and biker she spots along the San Diego coast. “I wouldn’t go in the water if you paid me $1 million right now,” she said. The beach, in her estimation, is one of the most dangerous places to be these days, as the novel coronavirus marches silently across California. Read the full article →

WHO WILL RENT SHORT-TERM VACATION RENTALS IN OCEAN BEACH AND POINT LOMA DURING THE PANDEMIC? April 7, 2020 by Source _By Sheila Pell / San Diego Reade

r

/ April 7, 2020_

In many places, temporary bans and restrictions are being placed on short-term rentals to help stop the spread of coronavirus. San Diego, reeling from the travel slowdown, hasn’t joined them. On April 4, Newport Beach, a vacation hotspot, banned the units for as long as the local emergency is on. Palm Springs, Big Bear Lake, Placer, and Nevada counties have shut them down. Several states have suspended them. The only exceptions are for critical workers. California’s stay-at-home order was issued by Gov. Gavin Newsom on March 19. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends avoiding all nonessential travel, even trips across town. Read the full article →

HOMELESS SAN DIEGANS GROW DESPERATE AS FOOD SOURCES DRY UP April 7, 2020 by Source _By Lisa Halverstadt and Kayla Jimenez / Voice of San Diego

/ April 6, 2020 _

As the coronavirus pandemic rages through the region and most people stay home, homeless San Diegans are confronting a loss of food resources they have long relied on to survive. Many meal operations – both organized and impromptu – have halted. Cafés and restaurants that once served as daytime refuges from the streets and in some cases, handed over free food, are no longer open. Read the full article →

OCEAN BEACH SAW MOST CITATIONS ISSUED BY SAN DIEGO POLICE FOR VIOLATIONS OF ‘STAY-HOME’ ORDER April 7, 2020 by Frank Gormlie Over last weekend, San Diego Police and County Sheriff’s began to enforce orders to stay home and avoid areas, including parks and beaches. San Diego Police issued 16 citations, where Sheriff’s deputies issued 34. And Ocean Beach saw most of those citations written up by San Diego officers. Two were issued by Carlsbad police. Ten citations were issued in Ocean Beach, including two at Dog Beach and three at Robb Field Skate Park. One citation was issued in the

Sunset Cliffs area.

Law enforcement across the County issued 52 citations for violations of the state’s stay-home order, which is intended to keep the public indoors to slow the spread of COVID-19. Read the full article →

‘THE MOST IRREVERENT, WILD AND LOVED NEW YORK YANKEE PLAYER’ WAS POINT LOMA’S OWN DAVID WELLS April 6, 2020 by Source _By William Parlee / Empire Sports Media

/ April 6, 2020_

Of New York Yankees players, none may have been as irreverent, wild, and loved than David Wells. Wells was cut from a different cloth than most Yankee players. He didn’t care who he threatened, who he offended, or what the Yankee brass thought of him. He only wanted to be the best pitcher he could be, and he did that, even pitching one of only three perfect games in the Yankee’s 117-year history in 1998. David Lee Wells was born on May 20, 1963, in Torrance, California. Read the full article →

‘WE SEND YOU OUR THOUGHTS AND PRAYERS’ April 6, 2020 by Source

_BY JONI HALPERN_

Today there is a thin crust of magnanimity covering the stone-cold heart of the American taxpayer. In this moment of chilling necessity and shared danger, we are willing to allow our government to deliver monetary help to individuals and business owners who have been shut out of their livelihoods. Maybe some of us will even send money to food pantries, sew masks for hospital workers, or share essentials among neighbors and extended families. Maybe we will shout our thanks from our balconies to first responders and medical personnel. We surely will pray for the nation’s rescue from the deathly grip of this pandemic, and also that enough ventilators are on hand if we are stricken. Read the full article →

THE RADICAL UNCERTAINTY OF NOW: LOVE IN THE TIME OF PANDEMIC April 6, 2020 by Jim Miller

_ BY JIM MILLER_

When everything is disrupted and normal routine falls apart, sometimes we are able to see things more clearly. In the midst of this pandemic, what I am reminded of is the fundamentally transitory nature of everything that is. Of course, at base, what a plague rudely brings to the forefront of one’s consciousness is that death is our final appointment. No matter what we do, however much money we make or recognition we receive, in the end, we are just dust. Ancient wisdom traditions have known this for a long time. As one Buddhist formulation puts it: I am subject to aging. There is no way to avoid aging. I am subject to ill health. There is no way to avoid illness. Read the full article →

THE OB PLAGUE WALKABOUT, PART 2 April 3, 2020 by Staff _BY JOAQUIN ANTIQUE_ Things continue to get weirder in Ocean Beach as the Covid 19 virus ramps up and the response becomes more serious. It sounds like the new normal is going to be required masks for people who are outside of their homes. Police officers and traffic control officers continue to block access to beach parking lots, parks, trails, and the shoreline. Most businesses are shuttered but a few restaurants continue to offer food and brew to go. Count Poma’s, Bar 1502, OB Kabob, Hungry Lu’s, Culture, Hess, and the Third Corner among them. This reporter went on walkabout on 4/2/20 and took the accompanying pictures. Strict social distancing was maintained at all times. Other people walking around were almost all keeping a distance from each other and most had a smile and kind word for their fellow community

members.

OCEAN BEACH PLANNING BOARD MEETING ‘ZOOM BOMBED’ WITH SWASTIKAS, PORN AND PERSONAL ATTACKS April 3, 2020 by Frank Gormlie On Wednesday night, April 1, the OB Planning Board tried to hold their public meeting via Zoom. But after about 5 minutes into the virtual meeting, it was – what’s called “Zoom Bombed”. The number of “attendees” suddenly spiked, Chair Andrea Schalgeter lost host controls, swastikas appeared, a porn website screen appeared and Board members were “verbally harassed by name”, according to Schalgeter. As you can imagine, the meeting came to a grinding halt. The incident was reported to the San Diego police and Schalgeter has been in contact with the City Attorney’s Office. This is not the first time a virtual meeting via Zoom has been disrupted with swastikas and porn. Here below is Andrea’s report about the incident to the community,

written April 2:

SAN DIEGO SHOULD USE CORONAVIRUS TIME TO CLEAN THE CITY April 3, 2020 by Source _BY COLLEEN O’CONNOR_ With every crisis comes an opportunity. This opportunity arrives once

in a century.

Forget massive funding needs, scarce special equipment requirements, or rare skill sets. This coronavirus opportunity is easier to fix. It only requires common sense and some hustle, and it can create “workforce-demand” jobs instantly. There are very few people or cars clogging the streets and sidewalks. Take advantage of those near ghost town conditions in our city of more than 1.3 million people. Use this break wisely. Use it to clean the

City.

LARGE OCEAN BEACH APARTMENT COMPLEX JUST SOLD FOR $5.4 MILLION April 2, 2020 by Staff Not everyone has been a stay-at-home recluse these days. A large Ocean Beach apartment complex has just been sold for $5.4 million. The complex at 4802 Orchard Avenue has 16 two-bedroom, one-bathroom apartments. The rather bland looking building dominates the intersection at Orchard and Sunset Cliffs Boulevard. A more recent promo photo, we believe, shows the large palm tree with a serious hair

cut.

AMAZON’S POOR TREATMENT OF WORKERS IS CATCHING UP TO IT DURING THE

CORONAVIRUS CRISIS

April 1, 2020 by Source A BIG SURGE IN ORDERS ISN’T THE ONLY REASON AMAZON IS STRUGGLING TO

KEEP UP

_By Casey Newton / The Verge

/ April 1, 2020_

It’s been clear for weeks that Amazon faces an unprecedented challenge in coping with the fallout from COVID-19. With tens of millions of Americans now dependent on online delivery for their food, medicine, and other essential items, the nation’s No. 1 e-commerce company is buckling under increased demand. And as fulfillment center employees are diagnosed with the virus across the country, Amazon’s already-restive workforce has escalated its efforts to win better pay and safer working conditions. Among other things, employees at affected locations have simply walked off the job. Read the full article →
