PARTS 7-9F: ANGLE GIRDERS Parts 7-9f: Angle girders. Fairly soon after starting to use Meccano parts, you realise that perforated strips have no strength at all to resist bending. Initially, girders were created using two strips connected at 90 degrees using angle brackets, and early outfits had PART 142-D: MOTOR TYRES The parts. Tyres were very slow to show up in the Meccano system, despite many requests through the Meccano Magazine. In March 1921 they were "not thought fit to include in our system". It used to be easy, the 23 being without a boss, and the later 23a with boss. In 1968, the pulley without boss changed to plastic, for economy reasons. Parts listings with pictures have existed since the PARTS 7-9F: ANGLE GIRDERS The above picture shows the full range of angle girders in medium green, dating from the 1950's. The first two, part numbers 7 and 7a, are the only Meccano parts longer than 12½'' and effectively determined the size of outfit boxes from the date of theirintroduction.
PART 131: DREDGER BUCKET / CAM The parts. As with the Eccentric (part 130), the Dredger Bucket is first mentioned in the January 1921 Meccano Magazine as a reader's suggestion, but this time the response is that "we already have this in hand and hope to introduce one very shortly". In fact it took until July 1921, announced at the same time as the Eccentric, and with thenext part number.
PART 23/23A: HALF-INCH PULLEYS Dealer spare parts boxes. A box of six part 23a, dating from the late 50's or early 60's. Individual part numbers Part numbers for the parts on this page are as follows: Unique part numbers For identification, each variation has been given a suffix to the main Meccano part number. These suffixes consist of a two-character code for the colour, and if there are many variations, a further number MECCANO BLUE/YELLOW/ZINC OUTFITS Meccano Set 4 To the left, an early 70s outfit 4, and to the right the same outfit in the 1977 modified box. Hypothesis. Obviously, prior to 1916, Meccano would have used the pre-Watts system of nickel-plating. This entailed risk of the plating peeling off the metal, and to prevent this the aim is to obtain as thin a plating as possible. This very thin plating tends to be quitebright and shiny.
