HEDGEHOGS? NOT SEEN IN MANY GARDENS DUE TO FENCING There is a woodland on this side of the fence. Note the large gap underneath the door. LONG TAILED TITS, BUILDING THEIR NEST AND FOOD CHOICES A noticeable difference is plain to see in their nest building. Long-tailed tits are recognisable by their undulating flight, a tail much longer than its small, pinkish body and generally flying in a small flock, are also known ‘flying teaspoons’. You generally hear BIRDS NEED CALCIUM TO LAY THEIR EGGS- WHERE DO THEY GET IT Other calcium sources. In experiments, great tits deprived of snail shells doubled their search effort and started to burrow in the soil and to eat sand, small stones and even their own eggs. Birds may find other sources of calcium, such as bones from dead mammals, bones in owl pellets, calcium-rich grit or calcium from the lime-rich mortar.NURTURING NATURE

I planted wildflower plugs into the lawn on a few occasions but they get swamped by GREENFINCHES & “FAT FINCH” DISEASE (TRICHOMONOSIS Many people call it ‘fat finch disease’ a very apt description. In the UK, it first appeared in greenfinches visiting gardens in the summer/autumn 2005, as a result of the Citizen Science scheme, Garden BirdWatch, run by the British Trust for Ornithology, (BTO). It is a well-known disease called ‘canker’ in pigeons and ‘frounce’ in WHAT, WHERE AND HOW TO FEED WRENS OVER THE WINTER-VIDEO Provide ground cover. This large caterpillar was found in dense ground cover by the foraging wren. If the soil was left bare there is less likelihood for the wren to find food. Even under the primroses, as shown in the video, there are prey items to be found in winter months. Providing leaf litter or leafmould is a good idea as many BIRDS NEED CALCIUM TO LAY THEIR EGGS- WHERE DO THEY GET IT Other calcium sources. In experiments, great tits deprived of snail shells doubled their search effort and started to burrow in the soil and to eat sand, small stones and even their own eggs. Birds may find other sources of calcium, such as bones from dead mammals, bones in owl pellets, calcium-rich grit or calcium from the lime-rich mortar. FINCHES WITH TYPICAL TRICHOMONOSIS OR FAT FINCH DISEASE The article below has been pasted from the BTO website. Feed the birds? Scientists highlight risks of disease at garden bird feeders. Wild birds are at risk of a number of serious diseases at our garden bird feeders, according to a collaborative study led by scientists from international conservation charity ZSL (Zoological Society of London) and published in the journal Philosophical* RSS

NURTURING NATURE
By George
NURTURING NATURE LTD – INSPIRED BY NATURE, DRIVEN BY SCIENCE. Nurturing Nature Ltd (est. 2000) through its Director, George Pilkington, who successfully integrates being an ecologist, environmental educationist, researcher and inventor. After years of painstaking wild bumblebee and solitary bee observations and experimentations, George has created the award-winning Nurturing Nature Bumblebee Nest Box and Solitary Bee Observation Nest Box. In light of the dramatic decline in wild bee populations, George has concentrated on researching the nesting behaviour of wild bumblebees and wild cavity nesting solitary bees, gaining insights into increasing the wild bee populations and species in his garden and the wider countryside. Action to arrest this decline has led to the delivery of inspiring presentations, using his wildlife and organic garden as a case study, to a wide range of professional audiences and the enthusiastic public of all ages. As a step change is the invention of innovative practical and educational bee boxes. These wild bee boxes, as the result of their scientific value and quality of workmanship, have been widely distributed throughout the world. It is hoped that the high-quality information on his website, his interesting and informative presentations and the output of wild bee boxes from Nurturing Nature Ltd. are contributing to educating people and arresting the global decline of wild bee populations. George Pilkington, Director of Nurturing Nature Ltd. has an MSc. in Countryside Management and a Certificate in Education. Watch my wildlife gardening videosLATEST ITEMS
