SPARK PLUGS FOR NORTONS Spark Plugs for Nortons. The codes used by the various manufacturers give some information about the plug types. The first digit represents the thread size, followed by a number which reflects the heat range of the plug. The Champion and NGK plugs match well inCOMMANDO FRAMES

Gearbox Oil. like many others I,ve tried many fancy synthetic oils in my Mk3 gearbox in the belief the latest technology must be better. Some of these oils didn,t feel quite right or improved the action despite their claims. I decided to try good old Castrol EP90 and the gearbox has never run sweeter. Selection is smooth with neutral easyto find.

A 500cc Dominator is relatively easy to kick start, being of low compression. However, I have a 600 cc Dominator too, and this one came with 10.5 to 1 pistons. This was a challenge to start, but the job was made easier by obtaining a longer kick start lever from RGM. The cost at the time (about three years ago,) was around £100. 1951 NORTON BIG FOUR, CYLINDER LUBRICATION? I forgot to ask, what cylinder head gasket is the correct fitment for a 1951 big4, alloy or copper asbestos? Also what is the correct de-coke kit for a 1951 Big4, DGN112 or MCS126? , also, thereappears to be kit number GN150 (1953-54 Big4) although advertised for 1953-54 models,the cylinder base gasket, valve chest, etc, gaskets appear tobepre 1948 fitment?

Back in the early 1970s I found that the 20W50 GTX of the day had protected the engine of my Triumph 650 well when I dismantled it after 40,000+ miles ofROADHOLDER FORKS

Since my earlier post I have been playing with the selector mechanism and I have noticed that there appears to be a lot of play around the nut that holds the selector arm (top left in the picture attached) when operating the gearchange lever the selector arm can be seen to waver and the aforementioned nut oscillates even though it is fully tightened. A phenominal engineer and a great great racer of Nortons, Mick was particularly well known as a parts supplier and engineer from his shop in Northampton from which he retired a few years ago. Mick's contact with Norton Commandos began in 1969 with the purchase of an accident damaged machine (one of the first Commandos sold in the UK). From 1970 CYLINDER HEAD IDENTIFICATION John Hudson and various authors from NOC-L Identification codes for the several types of Commando cylinder head. The Commando cylinder head can be distinguished from the earlier Heavy Twin head by its larger hemisphere which is offset to the cylinder bore and its 1½" inlet valves instead of the 1.406" valves on the 500cc and 650ccmachines.

Timing the right way. Hello first thing is to remove the tank and then the rocker covers to find TDC on the right stroke making sure the Magneto's points are looking up to the battery box you should find were the ring cam closes the points this is for the left hand cylinder the ignition lead is the back of the mag next to the battery box the WHEEL RIM SIZE CONFUSION On flicking through it tonight I notice that he says wheel rims are WM1 size. Looking at the Avon Tyres web site, it would appear that the 3.25 and 3.5 inch versions of Speedmaster, Safety Mileage and Roadrider-2 tyres all require a rim size of between 1.85 inches and 2.5 inches (WM1 size). WHICH ELECTRONIC IGNITION ? Jubilee & Navigator are 6v bikes, whilst Electra is 12v. To convert to 12v, ask Al Oz or myself. Most modern Electronic Ignition systems run at 12v (although a Pazon 6v system was on eBay a few days ago), so Jubilee & Nav will need an upgrade (but you keep your 6v coils as both are fired together- bonus!). Back in the early 1970s I found that the 20W50 GTX of the day had protected the engine of my Triumph 650 well when I dismantled it after 40,000+ miles of ATLAS CLUTCH LEVER PRESSURE Hence the different different lever. So the 06-0715 will make the Atlas clutch even harder to operate. If you have a lever with what RGM calls a fulcrum distance of 7/8 you can skip the rest of my post. Handlebar levers come with different pivot centre to cable nipple centre distance. A longer distance makes the clutch harder to operate. LUCAS ALTETTE HORN OVERHAUL LUCAS HORNS. A 500cc Dominator is relatively easy to kick start, being of low compression. However, I have a 600 cc Dominator too, and this one came with 10.5 to 1 pistons. At the front it has the two horizontal tubes to match the two spigots on the frame (as in the AN frame drawing) At the rear it has a Dzus fitting to attach to the mudguard. On the frame near the top shock mounts, there are two brackets with holes (as in the AN drawing). COMMANDO IGNITION TIMING After setting it to TDC and then accurately moving the crankshaft to 28 BTDC I retimed the Tri-Spark ignition based on this setting. Result - the bike started first kick and subsequently first kick every time whether hot or cold (it's previously always been an unpredictable starter). I subsequently rechacked the timing based on the inbuilt LAYDOWN GEARBOX POINTERS Back to the original subject. Since my earlier post I have been playing with the selector mechanism and I have noticed that there appears to be a lot of play around the nut that holds the selector arm (top left in the picture attached) when operating the gearchange lever the selector arm can be seen to waver and the aforementioned nut oscillates even though it is fully tightened. GEARBOX SPROCKET TEETH NUMBER 19T gearbox sprocket, 98 links rear chain. 20/21T gearbox sprocket, 99 links rear chain (i.e. includes a half-link) 22T gearbox sprocket, 100 links rear chain. The INOA Tech Digest (page 2-2) indicates 21T as the maximum for a stock 750. Mileage and riding styles definitely variable but good lubricants still important for rust protection as well. I,ve run a short silicone tube from the gearbox breather stub and the clutch cable is seni sealed so water can,t enter and has never been blocked, but there,s always condensation.ELECTRIC START

Fitting an external oil filter to earlier Commandos. In order to use common automotive filters, buy a helicoil for a ½" reach 14mm spark plug, break the installation tang off the helicoil and screw it onto the threaded stub that the oil filter normally screws onto. My 53 M7 is just the same and it's mostly because the springs front and back are really quite stiff. The bikes are heavy so when you put the brakes on there is quite a weight shift due to inertia to the front this manages to compress the front springs slowly and the oil damping has time to move in the damper tube to accommodate the movement but when you are riding, the front is loaded normally LAYDOWN GEARBOX POINTERS Back to the original subject. Since my earlier post I have been playing with the selector mechanism and I have noticed that there appears to be a lot of play around the nut that holds the selector arm (top left in the picture attached) when operating the gearchange lever the selector arm can be seen to waver and the aforementioned nut oscillates even though it is fully tightened. Knowing that my bike takes up to 30 stone when in the IOM I have also fitted extra rubber stops to support the pan .after all its 60 years old. 961 PARTS | NORTON OWNERS CLUB When I bought my first 961 it was registered as a 2016 model.
