THIRDHAND SMOKE
Thirdhand smoke (THS) is a term used to describe the residual contamination from tobacco smoke that lingers in rooms long after smoking stops and remains on our clothes after we leave a smoky place. It may seem merely like an offensive smell, but it is also indicative of the presence of tobacco toxins. THE SMOKER NEXT DOOR THE SMOKER NEXT DOOR . Secondhand smoke seeping into apartments or condominiums from neighboring units poses both a health risk and a significant nuisance. The only fail-proof solution to this problem is for buildings to go entirely smokefree, either by a policy voluntarily adopted by building management or by local ordinance. TOBACCO-FREE PHARMACIES Ending the sale of tobacco products in pharmacies is an important part of ongoing efforts to lower tobacco-related disease burdens. CVS finally went tobacco free in 2014, but other chain pharmacies did not. In fact, Walgreens was named by the FDA in 2019 of being the #1 violator of illegal underage tobacco sales to youth. ANR FOUNDATION HAS BEEN A SMOKEFREE LEADER FOR 36 YEARS ANR Foundation educates business owners, policymakers, and the public about the need for smokefree air everywhere. SMOKEFREE DOMESTIC FLIGHTS ARE NOW THE NORM Until February 25, 1990, smoking was permitted on flights. Thanks to efforts by ANR Foundation and our dedicated members, many younger people have never experienced a smoke-filled airplane ride and all flight crew are protected! PEOPLE USED TO SAY THERE WAS NO WAY TO GO SMOKEFREE IN BARS ORRESTAURANTS
ANR Foundation has worked tirelessly to let people know the health and business benefits of smokefree air! Today, 77.8% of the U.S. population enjoys smokefree restaurants and 66.4% enjoy smokefreebars.
HOTELS THAT ONLY OFFER NONSMOKING ROOMS HAVE JUMPED FROM 38% TO 85%! The proportion of hotels that only offer non-smoking rooms has jumped from 38% in 2008 to 85% in 2016! ANR Foundation’s educational efforts continue to change social norms about smoking in publicplaces!
