MANAGED SERVICE COMPANY (MSC) We all know about the traditional methods of operating for contractors (limited company, sole trader and umbrella company) but up until 2007 there was an alternative method of trading for a contractor, this was to use a Managed Service Company (sometimes referred to as a composite company). A SOLE TRADER'S Legally speaking, no. As a sole trader you are under no obligation to form a limited company at any particular stage. There are 3.5m sole trader businesses in the UK, which is a surefire sign that operating this way is a proven way to successfully work for yourself. That being said, there is a point at which forming a limited company may make IR35: WHAT ARE MY OPTIONS FOR TRADING INSIDE? This effectively means that you will be ‘employed for tax purposes’ and therefore taxed in largely the same way as an employee would be. MANAGED SERVICE COMPANY (MSC) We all know about the traditional methods of operating for contractors (limited company, sole trader and umbrella company) but up until 2007 there was an alternative method of trading for a contractor, this was to use a Managed Service Company (sometimes referred to as a composite company). Under this structure a number of contractors were placed into a group of shareholders all working HOW MUCH TAX DOES A SOLE TRADER PAY? Class 4 NICs. If you record profit over £9,500 in the 2020/21 tax year you’ll need to pay 9% Class 4 NICs on any profit up to 50,000, and a further 2% on profit achieved over this. From 6th April, these thresholds increase from £9,500 to £9,568 and from 50,000 to £50,270 a year. WHAT DOES AWR MEAN? GUIDE TO AGENCY WORKERS REGULATIONS The Agency Worker Regulations came into force on the 1 st October 2011. They essentially regulate the working conditions of temporary workers by affording them the same pay, working hours and holiday allowances as regular employees. The agency worker qualifies for this equal treatment after working in the same job for 12 weeks. DIFFERENCES BETWEEN CONTRACTORS, FREELANCERS, LOCUMS AND Freelancers charge an hourly rate or fixed price depending on the project, which is agreed before work commences. The main difference between contractors and freelancers is that contractors only work for one client at a time, whereas freelancers will generally work on multiple projects for more than one client.
