Hello! As much fun as I have had on News with Naylors, my time and energy are being focused on a different path. I wanted to let you know these two things: 1) A DAY IN ITALY (AROUND THE WORLD SERIES) Set up some chairs in your home to resemble a plane. Have your children show their passports (print from the Italy PDF) as they get seated. On the “plane ride” to Italy, give each child an “ Italy Facts Book ” (free download from 123 Homeschool). Go through the book together, practice some handwriting, and add any extra detailyou’d like.

Sensory (Fizzy Astronaut Bin): Every week, I look forward to our sensory activity, because I know my boys love them so much! This bin has baking soda (left over from our dinosaur unit), astronauts & space cars, plastic letters (X, D, A, S - these are the letters we've learned so far in our themes unit) and moon rocks (balls of tinfoil). After the boys played for some time, I brought out squirt THE BEST SLIME RECIPE Can I just say we had the best time playing with SLIME today! I wanted to let you know these two things: 1) @newswithnaylors on instagram has a few Come Follow Me activities that I try to post LETTER L ACTIVITIES (AGES: 3 & 20 MO.) Craft #1: Lion Craft from The Measured Mom. I love this lion craft. I cut out all the pieces and brought them out one at a time for my three and 20 mo. old to glue into place. I put globs of glue on their papers, so they knew where the pieces should go. THE BEST SLIME RECIPE Can I just say we had the best time playing with SLIME today! This is the third recipe we've tried and it is by far the best. I found this recipe at Little Bins LETTER Q ACTIVITIES (AGES 3 & 23 MONTHS) Craft #2: Q is for Quill Writing. After learning the song "Q is for Quill" from our Letter Q Songs & Rhymes, we did a simple quill writing activity.I demonstrated this activity first by dipping the tip of the "pen" (feather - came in a pack from The Dollar Tree) in "ink" (watered down washable paint) and writing a Letter Q on a piece ofpaper.
LETTER F: SONGS & RHYMES 1) Five Little Speckled Frogs. Print, cut out and tape/glue these Five Little Speckled Frogs (from Picklebums) onto popsicle sticks. Cut five slits into an empty paper towel roll for the popsicle sticks to go in. Remove them as prompted in the song. WEEK 23: HOLY GHOST (CAMPING ADVENTURE) 2) Camping Adventure. We are going to have a bag packed of "camping essentials" and head to our back yard to learn about the Holy Ghost. You can either use actual camping items if you have them or you can print a picture of them from my Holy Ghost (camping) PDF. I WILL FOLLOW JESUS' EXAMPLE Walk in Jesus' Footsteps Activity: Prepare five footstep cards (as pictured below) and write the following on the cards: Born, Prayer & Scriptures, Baptism, Kind & Loving, Resurrection. My three and one year old would take turns choosing which footsteps to stand on. For example, when one stood on the footsteps with "Born" I showed them a picture of Jesus as a baby. "STORIES OF JESUS ADVENT TREE" Before December, I purchased a three-foot Christmas tree for my children to decorate throughout the month with their easily crafted ornaments, each reminding them of a different story of Jesus. The key to making this work for us was by preparing the ornament supplies in baggies beforehand. I spent a couple hours one night (probably November 30) putting each of the ornament supplies into LETTER C: COOKIE CRAFT, COOKIE JAR NUMBER MATCHING 2) Cookie Jar Number Matching from Tot Schooling: This is such a darling printable and would be a fun way to review and match numbers. We have this Count and Learn Cookie Jar (second picture). I found it at Ross a few weeks ago. I like this game, because it also incorporates fine motor skills while learning numbers. The jar asks to find certain numbers and counts for you as a child inserts BOOK OF MORMON HEROES: A YEAR WITH THE BOOK OF MORMON I love A Year with the Book of Mormon from the Friend Magazine! Each month, children learn about a prophet, or hero, from the Book of Mormon. We're excited to spend the first FHE of the month learning about a Book of Mormon Hero and doing the activities found below!NEWS WITH NAYLORS

SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 23, 2019 HOMESCHOOL: RAIN & CLOUDS (WEEK 13) We just completed our twelfth week of homeschool. You can viewour daily schedule
(including
which curriculum we use for math and reading) by clicking the link. Below you'll find the art and science activities we did this week - focusing on Rain & Clouds.MONDAY:
* Book: The Cloud Book by Tomie de Paola & Little Cloud by EricCarle
* Activity: Cloud Art * Supplies: Blue Card Stock, Cotton Balls, & Glue We read about the different types of clouds (cumulus - puffy clouds; stratus - flat sheet clouds; and cirrus - feathery clouds) and how rain comes from the clouds. We also read about how clouds look like different images in the sky. We each made our own cloud image with cotton balls and glue. My four's idea (top) made a scene from one of our books and my sixmade a crocodile)
TUESDAY:
* Book: The Snowflake: A Water Cycle Story by Neil Waldman * Activity: Water Cycle Experiment & Craft * Supplies: Water Cycle Cards, Water Cycle Song, Pot, Salt, Small glass container, Lid, Plate, Ice Today we learned about how clouds are formed and the water cycle. We talked about these Water Cycle Cards (Evaporation, Condensation, Precipitation and Collection - purchase the set we used this week HERE by Tina O'Block) and sang this Water Cycle Songthat really helped
us remember the the words and cycle. Afterward we did an experiment to demonstrate the water cycle. Here'swhat to do:
1) Fill a pot with 2-3 inches of water and add a few teaspoons of salt - this represents salt water from the ocean. Have your children taste the salty "ocean water". Place a small glass container in the middle of the pot, so we can see how much water we collect from theevaporated water.
2) Place the pot on a stove burner and turn the heat on - representing the sun. Place a lid on top of the pot. After a minute or two, you'll start to see the water evaporate and form into "clouds" on the top of the lid. If you barely lift the lid, you can see the steam come out, which looks a lot like clouds. 3) Take the pot off the burner. Remove the lid and put a glass plate (so it doesn't melt) on top. Place a few ice cubes on top of the plate. When the evaporated water reaches cold air (like the ice) it forms clouds. Once there's enough water in the cloud, it rains. Wait five minutes. Remove the plate and check the amount of watercollected.
4) Taste the collected water - and point out how it's not salty! Ask your children why they think that is? Water is light enough to evaporate, but the salt particles are heavy enough they stay behind in the pot. That's why the collected water tastes clear and clean.WEDNESDAY:
* Book: Water is Water by Miranda Paul * Activity: Water Cycle Wheel Craft * Supplies: White Card Stock, Colored Pencils, Rain Drop, BrassFastener
After reading our book and reviewing the water cycle song, we made this water cycle craft. We decided to draw our own cycle for an additional art practice this week, but you can print the cycle and color it from this Water Cycle Set HEREby
Tina O'Block. After our craft was complete, we moved our water around the cycle while singing the song again. We also talked about the wonderful creation of the earth and how amazing it is that water is re-used over and over. We have the same amount of water on the earth today as when the dinosaurs roamed the earth!THURSDAY:
* Book: Down Comes the Rain by Franklyn M. Branley * Activity: Make it Rain Science & Fun in the Rain Jar * Supplies: Jar, Shaving Cream, Blue Food Coloring, Squeezer, Let ItRain Printable
We've done this before, but it had a new meaning after learning about the water cycle this week. Set up the experiment by filling a glass jar with water and shaving cream on top. We guessed how many drops of water our "cloud" would hold before raining (wrote it down on our paper - see below), dripped water into the cloud and counted the number of drops before we could see it "rain". One of my goals this year is to enjoy being outside in the rain! We have one-piece rain suits, rain boots and the gear we need to be outside! The boys and I made this simple "Fun in the Rain Jar" and put ideas inside of things we could do in the rain. I will post our ideaslater.
FRIDAY:
* Book: Hurricanes by Gail Gibbons & Tornadoes by Gail Gibbons * Activity: Magic Puffy Paint Storm Clouds * Supplies: Flour, water, baking soda, salt, food coloring, card stock, squeeze bottles My boys LOVE Magic Paint. We make it every few months, depending on our theme, and look forward to it every time. I love that you can make the paint in a blender, it's easy to use and it dries in the microwave (that's why it'd called magic!) The paint looks so cool when it dries. It puffs up and my boys love poking and squishing it. For today's craft, we used three different colors, so I tripled the magic puffy paint recipe (from Fun at Home with Kids)...A few pictures:
I made one batch yellow, one batch blue and one batch gray (I actually added black paint, instead of food coloring, and it turned out great.) Pour colors into squeeze bottles. Create any kind of design. Wet Paint - Ready for the Microwave. Dry Paint - Microwave in 30 second increments until dry. Ours took1:30.
Look how puffy this is! A fun, creative afternoon! Other Books we enjoyed this week: This and the Tornado by Loren Long, Weather Words by Gail Gibbons Posted by News with Naylor'sEmail This

HOMESCHOOL: FUNGI (WEEK 12) We just completed our eleventh week of homeschool. You can viewour daily schedule
(including
which curriculum we use for math and reading) by clicking the link. Below you'll find the art and science activities we did this week - focusing on Fungi (Mushrooms, Yeast & Mold).MONDAY:
* Book: The Mushroom Hunt by Simon Frazer * Activity: Hunt for Mushrooms & Grow Mushrooms * Supplies: Magnifying Glass & Mushroom Growing Kit We're lucky we live in Oregon and have mushrooms all around us. This week, we met together with friends to look for mushrooms. We had so much fun, but didn't find many mushrooms. When we came home, we looked in our yard and found so many (including this huge one pictured below)! We didn't dare touch them, but we got a good look and used sticks to examine them. When we came inside, we started this MushroomGrowing Kit
.
We followed the directions on the box and have mushrooms growing now! Mushroom Hunt with friends. Mushrooms in our yard! This one was the size of my kid's hand! It was like a treasure hunt finding mushrooms in our yard. Getting our mushroom kit ready to grow mushrooms. Easy instructionsare on the box.
Baby mushrooms starting to grow! Day 10 - Full grown mushrooms! We harvested them and are going toeat them this week!
TUESDAY:
* Book: Life Cycle of a Mushroom by Angela Royston * Activity: Mushroom Crayon Resist Craft * Supplies: White card stock, black crayon, white crayon, liquidwatercolors
We talked about the parts of a mushroom and how they grow. The parent mushroom has tons of spores found in its gills. The spores are released, grow threads and then a new mushroom grows. Mushrooms play an important part of the earth - they help feed animals and humans as well as help leaves/rotten wood decay. For our art project, I gave my kids paper and they drew a mushroom with a black crayon. They drew spots and different designs with a white crayon and then painted their mushrooms with watered down liquid watercolors. I love how these allturned out!
WEDNESDAY:
* Book: Mushroom Fan Club by Elise Gravel * Activity: Spore Prints * Supplies: White Card Stock, Mushroom, glass bowl At the end of this book, it gives directions on how to make Spore Prints. I bought these huge mushrooms from the grocery store and we used them for our activity. Here's what to do: 1) Examine the mushroom. Feel the gills and point out the differentparts.
2) Remove the stem.
3) Place the cap face down on a piece of card stock and cover it witha glass bowl.
4) Wait 24 hours and then remove the bowl and mushroom to see yourspore print.
Other Mushroom Books: Plants that Never Bloom by Ruth Heller, Mushrooms in the Rain by Mirra Ginsburg, and From Seed to Spore byLisa Owings
THURSDAY:
* Book: None.
* Activity: Balloon Yeast Experiment * Supplies: Packet of dry active yeast, sugar, water bottle, balloon Another type of fungi is YEAST. Some yeast is harmful, but some are very helpful especially when making bread and other foods and drink. Something really neat about yeast is that it loves to eat sugar (just like kids!). But, when the yeast eats sugar, it's almost like it "burps" and releases air (carbon dioxide). The air forms in bubbles and the yeast even creates enough air to blow up a balloon! This experiment shows us that yeast is a _living_ organism. Here's what todo:
1) Fill up a plastic water bottle with one inch of warm water. 2) Dump in one packet of dry active yeast and 1 tablespoon of sugar. 3) Immediately place a balloon over the neck of the water bottle. 4) Wait a couple minutes and watch bubbles appear and the balloonblow up!
Note: You could also make bread to demonstrate how yeast works. Make one loaf with yeast and one without. When you make bread, the yeast eats the sugar and releases carbon dioxide. That's what makes the bread rise and the air pockets create soft, fluffy bread. When the bread bakes, the yeast dies and it's safe to eat. We demonstrated this concept in a recent family home evening lesson on Spiritual Growth.
FRIDAY:
* Book: Mold Video on Youtube * Activity: Mold Experiment * Supplies: Paper plate, food options Mold is also a kind of fungus. In order for mold to grow it needs moisture and nutrients. There are tiny spores in the air and they start to grow when they land on moist surfaces. They feed off of the proteins and nutrients found on food and start to grow. Mold likes to grow in warm places, and that explains why we keep a lot of food in the refrigerator. Here's what to do: 1) Place 5-6 items on a paper plate (we used a kiwi, pear, refried beans, sour cream, Swiss cheese and bread). 2) Talk about which ones your children think will grow mold first. 3) Examine the mold each day and watch for mold! TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 5, 2019 HOMESCHOOL: HALLOWEEN PART 2 (WEEK 10) We just completed our tenth week of homeschool. You can viewour daily schedule
(including
which curriculum we use for math and reading) by clicking the link. Below you'll find the art and science activities we did this week - focusing on Halloween. There are book options available for each day, but I got a bunch of books from the Library we have been reading from all of them this week.MONDAY:
* Book: Mummy Cat by Marcus Ewert OR Mummies Made in Egypt by Aliki * Activity: Mummy Craft * Supplies: Construction Paper, Scissors, Glue, Paper Towels, GooglyEyes
* Main Point: Scissor, paper and gluing skills We are really enjoying learning about mummies. Today we read some books, watched a PBS Kids episode on King Tut and then did a simplemummy craft.
TUESDAY:
* Book: Pyramids & Mummies by Simon Seymour * Activity: Mummy Excavation * Supplies: Cornstarch, water, toy skeletons, 9x13 aluminum container, jewels, digging tools * Main Point: Pretend play, fine motor. Prepare this activity three days in advance. You can view a detailedtutorial
by clicking the link. We also made these mummy hot dogsfor
lunch!
WEDNESDAY:
* Book: At the Old Haunted House by Helen Ketteman * Activity: Haunted House Craft * Supplies: Card Stock, scissors, glue and a black marker * Main Point: Creativity, cutting and gluing skills I love our art projects, because they turn out so differently from one another. I showed my kids how to draw a haunted house and I asked them where they wanted their windows. I placed their house over carpet and cut slits to make windows. We glue the house onto yellow card stock, cut around the house and then glued the house onto purple card stock. Then, we drew in the windows! My six didn't want any windows, but helped my four draw "monsters" in his windows. It was really cute watching them help each other.THURSDAY:
* Book: Vampirina Ballerina by Ann Marie Pace * Activity: Vampire Footprint Craft * Supplies: Red card stock, black and white paint, black marker * Main Point: Drawing and Painting Skills I like this book, because it teaches us that we don't have to be perfect and that it's okay to make mistakes. I wax trying to think of a way to paint that's different from what we've done recently.. and I thought of painting with our feet. I helped paint their feet (one at a time), we stamped them on paper, let them dry and drew vampirefaces.
FRIDAY:
* Book: Bunnicula by James Howe * Activity: Vampire Slime * Supplies: Clear Elmer's glue, red food coloring, water, borax powder, play dough tools * Main Point: Imaginative play. Sensory skills. Cutting skills. To make the slime:
1) Add 1/2 cup water + 1/2 cup clear glue + red food coloring into a bowl. Stir. Set aside. 2) In a separate bowl, add 1/2 cup warm water + 1/4 tsp. Borax Powder.Stir.
3) Add the borax solution to the glue mixture and stir until all the solution is mixed in thoroughly. 4) Remove the slime from the bowl and knead until smooth. This slime was a little sticky to our fingers, but was so much fun. It takes less than five minutes to make the slime and created over an hour of play for us. This is the true color of slime (on a white table). If you want it to look black like the first picture, add black glitter. You can cut the slime with play dough scissors. My six's slime monster. I love this. Additional Halloween Books: Cat Nights by Jane Manning; Creepy Carrots by Aaron Reynolds; Ten Timid Ghosts by Jennifer O'Connell; Ghosts in the House by Kazuno Kohara. * News with Naylor'sHi! My name is
Kate. I am a stay at home mom with a passion for teaching children. My focus is to create activities that are fun and engaging for children, which also build a strong connection between parent/child or teacher/child. I hope to share ideas that will help others through their journey of motherhood. View my complete profile Picture Window theme. Theme images by UteHil.
