Earlier this month, before the uptick in COVID-19 cases that has led to near-lockdown conditions in Taipei and New Taipei, 400 members of the Puyuma people protested outside of the Taitung county government building on May 7th against plans to develop a solar farm. In particular, protesters claim they were not adequately 323 NEW CASES TODAY, 400 CASES ADDED FROM BACKLOG, WITH MINISTER OF HEALTH and Welfare Chen Shih-chung and the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC) reported 323 new cases of COVID-19 today. 321 cases were instances of domestic transmission, while two cases were imported. Two deaths were also reported, bringing Taiwan’s death toll from the COVID-19 pandemic to seventeen. Taipei and New Taipei continue to be the areas with the most cases. New Taipei had 129 cases, with 26 cases in Zhonghe. Taipei had 70 cases, with 31 cases in Wanhua. VACCINE DISTRIBUTION BEGINS IN TAIWAN Vaccination begins shortly after the 1,000th confirmed case of COVID-19 in Taiwan. Taiwan received its first batch of vaccines, 116,500 doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine, earlier this month. Premier Su Tseng-chang and Minister of Health Chen Shih-chung were the first to receive the vaccine, in a move aimed at demonstrating that thevaccine is safe.
